Now that we're past Memorial Day, I think it's safe to say we won't have any more snow or even frost in Richmond for a while!  For some time,  I wondered if warm weather was going to show up at all, but it's here.
Another safe bet is that our conference in Columbus will be a terrific gathering.  If you haven't decided yet whether or not to come, I hope you'll look at the program another time and decide in the affirmative.  We'd sure like to see you!
Will we match the Richmond attendance of 343? We're getting close.  Who knows, you might be the one to put us over the top.

  Till then, keep singing!

Conference Sponsorship Opportunities
If you haven't received a letter about sponsorships , it should be arriving very soon.  In the meantime, an electronic copy of the form is attached here.  You can print and mail it in or just call the office about your choice.  This is a wonderful way to show your support for leaders, remember a cherished person or celebrate an important event.  If you can't be present this summer, it's also a great way to say you're with us in spirit.  The deadline is June 10, but reserve your sponsorship choice soon before someone else snaps it up.  Sponsorship form  Sponsorship form Hymnal Showcases

We have two exciting showcases this summer.  The Presbyterian Church (USA) and Community of Christ both released their new hymnals last fall.  Each hymnal has been warmly and enthusiastically received in their respective denominations and now we'll get an inside look at the process of creation and their contents.
David Eicher will lead the Glory to God showcase and a follow up sectional.  Jane Gardner and her team from Community of Christ will present Community of Christ Sings and also a follow up sectional.

I know there is great interest in exploring both of these hymnals.  We've already had to move both follow up sectionals to larger rooms to accommodate all those who have signed up!

Don't miss the introduction to two fine new collections!

Lifting Hearts - Joining Hands - Raising Voices Lovelace Scholarships

For more than 25 years, Lovelace Scholars have graced our summer conferences with their enthusiasm and musical skills.  We're especially proud of those who have continued their commitment to the church's song long after graduation.   We believe that their Lovelace Scholar experience is transformative so one of the important facets of our Endowment Campaign is the expansion of the Lovelace Scholarship.  Investing in these students is a very good investment for the future of congregational song.   Look what three of our former Scholars are doing and what they're saying about their Hymn Society conference experience. Dr. Vivee Kenileno Peseye, 2002 Lovelace Scholar, now a music lecturer at Patkai Christian College, Nagaland, India.  She visits our website often to stay informed about The Hymn Society. In her comments to Andreas Teich in his research for "The Lovelace Scholarship at 25" in THE HYMN (Spring/Summer 2011) she said:    "Ever since I came to the USA for music study which started from Moody Bible Institute, I had heard of the Hymn Society and read the journal. But I never thought that I would get a chance to attend one of its conferences. The Lovelace Scholarship helped make that dream come true and I will always be grateful for that. I come from an area where congregational singing is till going on strongly and I think this is what Dr. Lovelace would have loved to hear."   Closer to home, Adam Tice, 2002 Lovelace Scholar and author of three collections of hymn texts reflects on the importance of the expansion of the Scholarship:   "When I arrived at the 2004 Hymn Society conference in Collegeville, Minnesota, I was star-struck.  I had written my first hymn text the previous Fall, and now I was meeting the living legends of the field.  I encountered Daw, Duck, Duffner, and Damon--and that was just the D's!  The friendships and mentoring launched during that week have fed, refined, and informed my writing over the last ten years.  I was hooked, and knew that I had to return for the following year's conference.  The financial burden at that point was quite steep.  I was still a student, and even with reduced registration it was difficult to attend.  But I knew it would be worth the sacrifice.  Our annual hymnological family reunion has become nearly indispensable.  (Yes, the birth of a child is cause for an excused absence...)  I am delighted that the Society is implementing a program for returning Lovelace Scholars--I would have eagerly applied in 2005."     And one of our very recent Lovelace Scholars, Ginny Chilton (2012) will be among the first group of returning Lovelace Scholars:     "I attended my first Hymn Society conference as a Lovelace scholar in 2012. I was honored to receive the scholarship and knew I'd have a good time, but I was not prepared to fall in love with the Hymn Society. In Winnipeg I fell in love with the Society's commitment to excellence in hymn texts, music, and theology. I loved its uninhibited spirit for sharing the joy of congregational singing with others. I loved everyone's commitment to each other; the Society is one of those rare places where there is no hierarchy among attendants, and where people of diverse ages, denominations, tastes, and political persuasions come together in true friendship. Most of all, I love that all of this blossoms from our shared passion for the Good News. I felt a sense of ownership in this organization almost right away.     Church music is a tough career: often stressful, isolating, and competitive.   The Hymn Society has given me a place to call home, with people who share  my love for God and congregational singing, but who also love me and have made me part of the family. I am so grateful!"

We'd love to have a copy for the office also.  If you have a copy and would loan it to us, we'll make a copy and return yours.

The Hymn - Now Available Online in Full-text
In case you missed this last month -- we're so pleased to have our documents available, we want to make sure everyone knows where to find them! You can access back issues through 2008 of The Hymn and all the Papers of The Hymn Society from our website.  Click on News and Views and make your selection from the drop-down menu.
Great news from our Director of Research, Tina Schneider!
The Hymn and the Papers of the Hymn Society are now freely available full-text through 2008 at HathiTrust. HathiTrust is an organization of universities which have scanned books, journals, and other materials to "establish a repository to archive and share their digitized collections." The University of California and The University of Michigan had already digitized The Hymn and the Papers, but they were not openly accessible due to their copyright status (like a copyrighted book in Google Books). Through a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives copyright agreement, The Hymn Society is retaining copyright of the materials, and the works must always receive attribution. The materials can be used only for noncommercial purposes, and they can't be distributed in a transformed or remixed state. The visibility, and more importantly, the use of hymnological research provided by The Hymn Society should increase dramatically as a result of this agreement with HathiTrust.

 Continuing Contests

Macalester-Plymouth United Church in St. Paul, MN announces the nineteenth annual international contest for English language hymn writers.  The 2014 contest will be a search for a hymn text that celebrates God's presence in current social changes and changes in the church.  It carries a prize of $500.  All entries must be postmarked by December 31, 2014.  For more information, view the attached  flyer.

Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, is pleased to announce its first Church Music Search, a contest for composers and authors. This annual and international search calls for the creation of congregational hymns, choral anthems and orchestral music that engage and exclaim liberal Christian theology and associated themes. Each year a different musical category and theological theme will be selected to resource Pullen and other theologically-liberal congregations with artistic and meaningful church music.

The 2015 search is for an SATB choral anthem suitable for adult choirs with keyboard accompaniment (organ or piano). Other optional instrumental parts may be included. The text of the anthem should express the meaning and celebration of Easter from a theologically-liberal viewpoint.

An award of $1500 will be given to the creator of the winning selection (or divided equally between author and composer). Though the Pullen Music Ministry will retain the right to print and use the winning selection in perpetuity, copyright will remain with the creator(s) and a publisher will be sought for the winning composition.

Entries are submitted electronically and will be accepted through February 1, 2015. Find submission guidelines and enter at: www.pullen.org/musicsearch .
