I hope that 2014 is off to a great start for you!  Sherry and I are well-settled in our new offices on the relocated campus for Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond.

Some of you have noticed that our new physical address shows up on certain documents.  We've learned that mail reaches us more quickly if sent to our actual location.  We still pick up mail at the old address and will continue to do so, but we encourage you to change your address book to reflect our new location.  You do not need to include the Seminary's name in our address.

New Address:
The Hymn Society in the US and Canada
8040 Villa Park Drive, Suite 250
Henrico, VA  23228

Old Address
The Hymn Society in the US and Canada
3400 Brook Road
Richmond, VA  23227

Either way, we look forward to hearing from you!

Meanwhile, keep singing!!

  Calling All Students!!!

The Lovelace Scholarship provides full registration, housing and meals for the summer conference to full- or part-time students who have congregational song as a part of their curriculum.  We accept up to 10 Lovelace Scholars each summer.

This year, we have expanded application rules to allow persons who have graduated from their studies within the past three years to apply for the Lovelace Scholarship.

Another first this year is an expansion of the Scholarship to provide 5 scholarships for returning Lovelace Scholars.  Those who have been Lovelace Scholars in the past four years are invited to apply for a second year's scholarship.  This award will provide 60% of the costs of registration, housing and meals for the conference.

Applications will be available on the website in mid-February and are due no later than May 1.

What Do You Know About Columbus?

Tina Schneider and Robin Knowles Wallace have prepared a short flyer to let you know more about the city where we'll gather this summer.  It's a place with a rich hymnic heritage and many interesting sites. You may want to add a few days before or after the conference to take in some of these fascinating options in and around the city.  Check this out!!  Why Columbus

Registration forms available
in February online and in the Winter issue of The Hymn

We Need Your Help!

Our campaign to raise funds for the new programs of The Center for Congregational Song needs your help:

  • Do you know how to write grant applications? We have a good list of foundations to which we can apply for funds. We need someone with the time and expertise to write the applications for us.
  • Do you have fund-raising experience? We want to add two to four additional members to the Financial Development Committee. We will meet quarterly (and sometimes more often) via telephone conference call. There will be assignments to be carried out as well as the meeting time.

If you are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Deb at the Society's office, deb@thehymnsociety.org, or 804-201-1207. She can fill you in on the details of these opportunities.

Many thanks to Peter Stickney for our reviews this month! January reviews

Do Hymns Have a Family Tree?

What do "O Sanctissima" and "No More Auction Block" have in common?  They are two of the seven possible antecedents of "We Shall Overcome" discussed in a thought-provoking article by Victor V. Bobetsky entitled, "The Complex Ancestry of We Shall Overcome" which appears in February 2014 issue of The Choral Journal.  Find a copy and check it out!

Hymn Detectives

Part of of the fun in the Hymn Society office is helping people track down elusive hymns.  Recently Christopher Webber contacted the office about a hymn quotation in one of President Reagan's speeches.  A posting on FaceBook quickly provided answers, but I asked Chris to write up a little about his query.  You'll enjoy reading about this latest episode of "hymn detectives" in the attached pdf.  Reagan's hymn quotation

Maybe we should consider a cable TV series . . . .
