Greetings!
We have just passed the autumnal equinox, but the signs of fall seem to be everywhere around us. Churches have started up new seasons of choir and handbell rehearsals, schedules are getting more regular and more jammed, and, of course, school is in full swing. School has begun for The Hymn Society as well. We are in our new location at last (but our mailing address has not changed!) and students are eagerly taking their places in the new classrooms, chapel and student lounge. The place is buzzing with activity.
The online hymnology course that was promoted through the spring and summer is also in full swing. We have seven in the class: two from BTSR and five who will transfer credit back to their home campuses. With a wide variety of backgrounds and denominational homes, we will have quite interesting discussions as we look at our shared hymnic heritage and trends for the future. Thanks to the electronic classroom, students from Birmingham, AL, Toronto, ON, Grand Rapids, MI, Ankeny, IA, and Middletown, OH are connected with two BTSR students here in Richmond, VA. Coming up in October is our first Hymn Sing -- conducted by telephone conference call!! Those are always fun! Thanks to two of our Fellows, David Music and Michael Hawn for writing excellent texts to anchor our studies!!
What are you learning this fall??
Meanwhile, keep singing!!

The Hymn Society's Endowment Campaign
Join us on this exciting new venture!!
In the world of raising funds for The Center for Congregational Song, there are two kinds of people : donors and connectors. Donors are obvious. They are the individuals and institutions-think charitable foundations and endowment funds-that are capable of giving the large grants that we need to hit our $2.2 million target. Connectors are the folks wh
o can connect our terrific trio of fund-raisers, Deb Loftis, Allan Burton and Todd Heifner, to donors. We think all of our members are both donors and connectors. This campaign is going to succeed because every member of the Society participates. That means giving at a level where you are comfortable. But to hit our goal, we need to move beyond the confines of our membership to the wider world of people who have significant giving capacity (more than $5,000) and who also value the song of the church. Who do you know who might be a donor or a connector? Your job is to introduce them to the work of the Society, and then call in Deb, Allan and Todd.
Together we can make dreams into reality! Joanne Reynolds

Research Project Survey
Robin Knowles Wallace, a professor at Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO), is conducting a survey for a faculty project, eventually to be a series of essays and a book on singing, congregational song, and soundtracks of contemporary lives. The project is tentatively titled "My Life Flows On in Endless Song:" The Impact of Congregational Singing on Discipleship and the chapter that these responses are for is titled "The Soundtracks of Our Lives." The survey has both short and long questions, some yes/no and others fuller answers, and is designed for persons 18 and older. There is one question which could trigger emotions about a previous crisis; that question may be skipped if desired. The survey will take approximately 15-30 minutes. The research will take place May 2013 through May 2014. Information on publication of these ideas will be found following the conclusion of the study on the MTSO website (www.mtso.edu ) under Wallace's publications. The survey can be found by following this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NCL6X2G. Since this survey involves a third party Internet site, participants are encouraged to consult Survey Monkey's privacy policy at http://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/policy/privacy-policy/ . Filling out the survey constitutes consent to participate in the research project. Thank you for participating!
