"The Tree of Life and Love:
Blossoming of Congregational Song Since Vatican II"

Sweeping changes have occurred in hymnody over the past fifty years.  Protestant and Catholic churches alike have embraced new music, new styles, and new genres of congregational song.  We are heir to a tremendous burst of liturgical creativity that enriches our worship.

Join us next summer to explore how a rich cross-fertilization continues to inspire a new generation of writers.
Our Monday evening festival, "Gathered Under the Tree, Calling Forth the Light: an Ecumenical Easter Vigil"  will be led by Andreas Teich and James Hart Brumm.
Rev. Andreas Teich is a pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Bay City, Michigan.  Rev. James Hart Brumm is pastor of Blooming Grove Reformed Church in the Albany area of New York.  Both have been active members of The Hymn Society for a number of years and regular participants in our annual conference.  Their festival will lead us through the major sections of the Easter Vigil -- in a way that fits into our festival timeframe! Ruth Anderson, director of music at Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg, IL will be the organist and the festival will be held at historic St. Paul Episcopal Church in downtown Richmond.   ****** And for the first time, we will offer an extended 8-hour workshop with master song enlivener, C. Michael Hawn, FHS.  Sign up early for this masterclass as enrollment is limited!!

 Recent Hymn Festivals

Billy Orton, Minister of Music at First Baptist Church, Huntsville, Alabama, sent me this link on the church's website where previous hymn festivals are listed.  For the more recent services, a pdf of the service is attached.  What a great idea to underscore the importance of hymn festivals in the worship life of a congregation!  Check out this link--perhaps other will adopt this practice!  http://www.fbchsv.org/HymnFestivals

November 4 2012 -- two days before the national election in the US, the Roanoke (VA) Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presented a program on "Favorite Hymns of the Presidents. The program was arranged by Rose Ann Burgess with Richard Cummins at the organ.
Be sure to let us know of hymn festivals in your area.  Send copies of the program to the office if available so that we can pass them along to others for planning ideas. |

Musician's Response to Tragedy in Newtown, CT

Just a few days ago, I received a note from David Haas (who will lead Night Prayer this summer at our conference, by the way). I am always deeply moved by the thoughtfulness and spiritual depth of our Hymn Society folks.  In the wake of events in Newtown, he  has been concerned about pastoral musicians who must minister and lead the sung prayer for funerals, especially in painful or crisis situations.  He notes that in Newtown, both the shooter and his mother were members of St. Rose of Lima Catholic parish.  He was thinking about what a difficult time those parish ministers must be having--especially here at Christmas.

David says, "So I have been thinking, what can we as pastoral musicians (and fellow pilgrims) do in a practical way?  So I have found the address of the parish, and the names of two of the music directors there... and so, I would like to invite you, and the members of your choirs and ensembles, your cantors, and your parish communities.. to consider writing them a card or a note (not an e-mail, but an actual card or note, that they can hold in their hands), to share our support, our prayers, and in particular, stand (and sing) in solidarity with those who are entrusted with the ministry of sung prayer during these most difficult times. "

Here is the address and contact information:

Joe Jacovino and Brian Kirmil, Directors of Music
St. Rose of Lima Church
46 Church Hill Road
Newtown, CT  06470-1648

This parish and other worshiping communities in Newtown will need a long time to heal, so don't think that your notes would come too late to be helpful.

New Ways to Publish Your Hymns

I get requests for information regularly from folks asking how to get their new hymns published and how to let churches know their new texts or tunes are available.  Jann Aldredge Clanton (who will be presenting her new hymn collection this summer with Larry Schultz) offers these suggestions:

Hymn text writers and composers, I would encourage you to explore using social media to get your work to people, if you aren't already doing so. Through a website ( www.jannaldredgeclanton.com ), blog (http://jannaldredgeclanton.com/blog/?p=1488), YouTube, and Facebook, my hymn texts have reached as many or more people as through my published hymnbooks. And social media help people discover my published work. For example, these 3 YouTube videos have so far had 1461 "views"! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZx8LVzFzrQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezm4QIxs2Pw&feature=g-crec
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTdZyBcg9iw&feature=g-crec You may also want to help people discover your creative work by making videos with your hymns, developing a website, writing a blog, and/or posting your work on Facebook!

Do other members have additional ideas and strategies to share?  We can encourage and help each other!

New Hymn-based Resource Available

Glenn Gordon, of Orem, Utah sent information about a new resource for hymns:  "I want to let you know about a new project that I have embarked upon in publishing new hymns, carols and arrangements through a quarterly publication: Hymns Today. Issue 1 is out now and features Christmas music. The idea behind the magazine was to encourage composers in writing new hymns and carols and to provide a publishing source where they may make people aware of their music. Hymns Today is intended as a vehicle for choir directors and Church musicians especially those on limited budgets as the purchaser of Hymns Today has the right to copy the songs contained therein for non-commercial, home and church use free of additional charge. If you or any of your members are interested in learning more about Hymns Today you can find us on www.hymnstoday.com

Hymns Today is a publication of LDS Composers Trust. Glenn sent me a copy of the first issue to examine. I was particularly drawn to a unison setting of "Gentle Mary" by Daniel Gawthrop.  Perhaps you'll find some useful anthem settings there as well.
