June 2, 2014 - Are little things getting to you? Do you feel like nothing is quite working for you right now? Are you beginning to feel that you are taking steps backward instead of steps forward? The saying, "don't sweat the small stuff," is one that too many people don't understand the power within. When little things get to you, you become distracted. Your distraction causes other things to be overlooked or ignored, which causes more things to go awry. When it feels like one undesirable thing after another is happening, it's time to step back and shift your thinking and mindset in order to re-establish a more forward moving momentum.
Take an MM&I Moment to assess your situation as if you were an outsider looking inside. First, list everything that appears to have gone wrong or happened that has caused you frustration and a feeling that everything is going in the wrong direction. List the first of these events that did not go as you had hoped it would and then list the other things in order as much as possible. Now note how much time you actually spent lamenting, revisiting, or discussing the first few situations that could have possibly caused you to be distracted, therefore, indirectly causing other undesirable events to occur. Now pretend you are starting with a clean slate. What can you do to move any one or several of these things forward? What can you do that will progress something that is unrelated, but important to you? The true secret to minimizing and overcoming the impact of unforeseen challenges is to focus on what you can do, no matter how small of a step it may seem at the time.
