Pastor Dan

Many wonderful things are in store for us coming up! Our dedication of the new piano on May 5, Children's Sunday on the 19th, and my new bible study on the First Tuesday of each month (with July-August off). In May we will be studying Luke's version of The Lord's Supper, found at Luke: 22. Take a look at it and join me at 11:00 am on May 7th at the Guiteras House. We'll take a closer look! We have our Fundraising Fiesta Potluck on May 10! That should be really fun! The East Bay Food Pantry has their annual 5k Get OFF YOUR CAN on Saturday May 11. See more below about how to support them and the race of our sister mission.

Soon we will be saying "After the Fourth of July." Every time we do, please remember that FCC started it all! We founded this wonderful tradition that is now a national, and certainly a Bristol treasure. Thank you Rev. Henry Wight, 6th pastor of FCC!

Every blessing, aye,
Pastor Dan

Bible Study  JOIN PASTOR DAN IN THE GUITERAS HOUSE THE FIRST TUESDAY IN MAY (MAY 7) at 11am. This month's Bible Study will be on the Lord's Supper found in Luke 22:14-30.

Mission NYC
APRIL 2014!
April 20-25 - NEW YORK, NEW YORK MISSION TRIP!
Yes, after proclaiming CHRIST IS RISEN! on Easter Sunday, during April Break, we will be working with YSOP, a Quaker group in Manhattan. See YSOP. We will all be staying at the Brooklyn Sheraton. This means families, couples, etc will get their own space.  Pastor Dan has negotiated a special deal with them that includes access to the Club Lounge/Pool so that we have breakfast provided and heavy yummy snacks each evening. There is a Shake Shack and 5 Guys only blocks away. Easy access to the subway. We'll all have a 7 day pass so no need to re-fill those cards! We will be focusing on hunger/homeless issues. The folks at YSOP are super organized. All we have to do is get into teams of 6-7 with adult leaders in each team. They handle the rest. The approximate cost of the trip is 700.00 per person- including transportation (train!) food, lodging and the program fee. The youth will continue to fund-raise so they can go at no charge. There will be personal time (in the evenings) for sight-seeing, but our primary purpose is to make a difference. You may also elect to stay an extra day or so.

Church has left buildingFALL 2013 date TBD - The Church Has Left The Building Day. This is a day when our community of faith goes out into Bristol to do good deeds instead of holding traditional worship.Last year we created quite a stir in Bristol with this wonderful event. We are making a difference!

Woman Guild

WOMEN'S GUILD...

 Previously known as Missionary Society)

Many years ago, there were three Women's organizations, "Third Circle, ProChristo and Women's Missionary". The Bazaar income was divided thus.  Half went to the church, and the other half was divided into thirds to the three organizations. The Third Circle used theirs for church purposes. The ProChristo and Missionary organization allocated their income to missionary needs. Due to lack of membership and needs, the Third Circle dismantled. The remainder was divided in half. ProChristo disbanded for the same reason, leaving half of the bazaar income to Women's Missions.

We will allocate our half to various missionary needs and occasionally to church needs as per original plan; hence, "legality" for spending some on church needs. However, now we have the Church Council and they fund the church needs. What we need is guidance in the matter of who pays for what and have it set down in writing.

The Women's Guild was given yarn, fabric and notions for anyone to use for the making of items to be sold at the Bazaar to benefit the church. So, if you like to help us make things to be sold, please come and check out the many donated fabrics, yarns and other things to see if you can use them to help the church. You can come during office hours.

FellowshipSUNDAY HOSPITALITY...

Hospitality is asking for your PARTICIPATION.  They are looking for homemade or store bought goodies for Sunday. Helpful hands for setup and break down would be greatly appreciated. Please see sign up sheet in the DeWolf room if you can help out or let Sug Grant know. If you can't help, please make sure you contribute to the "kitty" so someone can purchase a goody for you to eat on Sunday. Thank You.

Thank you to all who donate and help by bringing in treats. It is nice to have help. If you can help, please do.

See sign-up sheet in the DeWolf Room.

Ecumenical MealsECUMENICAL MEALS...

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep."   (John 21:17)

Our church's participation in the Ecumenical Meals ministry is an important part of our effort to feed the elderly and infirm in our community. People receiving Meals-on-Wheels during the week have no deliveries of meals to them on weekends except for Ecumenical Meals.

We work in conjunction with four churches.

In addition to preparing meals that people can eat over the weekend, the meals must be delivered on Saturday mornings.

April was our month for preparing these meals.

This program is important because it allows people to continue living in their homes.  Without it, they would be forced to move into assisted living or nursing homes, which could be cost-prohibitive in some cases.

MAY IS OUR MONTH TO HELP OUT!

Your help in cooking and delivering these meals is really appreciated.

Thank you so much.

19th-Century Rhode Island in 3-D

On June 6
th
from 6:30 - 8:00 PM, the Herreshoff Room of Bristol's Rogers Library will be transformed into a giant stereopticon, bringing to life the 19
th
century world of Bristol, Warren, East Providence and Providence. Local historian and preservation consultant Ned Connors will be your guide for an evening of photographic time travel. Vintage stereo images from the Rhode Island Historical Society's collection will be projected onto a large silver screen.  3-D glasses will be provided.

When stereo photography first gained popularity, it was a parlor entertainment that used a handheld viewing instrument called a stereopticon. New technology allows us to take these historical 3D images, convert them to transparency, and project them for public viewing.

Don't miss this unique perspective on local history. The event is free and open to all. Donations for the Rhode Island Historical Society will be accepted.

(At least one historic image of First Congregational Church taken soon after construction will be shown.)

Fundraiser Fiesta!

May 10th FUN FUNDRAISING
 2013

Potluck Supper

At 6pm

In the DeWolf room.

Fundraiser Fiesta - Many Hands Make Light Work!!!

We are hosting a Potluck Supper to showcase the many opportunities for Congregation Members to help support the church with Time & Talent.

During dinner, we will be discussing the different Fundraising events that we hold during the year and encouraging members to find an event or two that they can support in some way, either by filling a role or a timeslot. This is critical to the life & mission of our church, because the more money we raise to support Operations, the more we can spend on Missions!

Please join us on May 10th at 6 pm and bring your favorite dish!
Sign up sheet is located in the DeWolf room.

FLOWER COMMITTEE

Carnation

JANUARY

The flower for the month of January is the carnation. The botanical name for carnations is Dianthus. The word "dianthus" means "divine flower". Carnations are said to represent either "fascination" or "love". The association with fascination is fitting because of the start and freshness of the New Year. The association with love is a bit more complicated.

Carnations come in a wide variety of colors but these colors have special symbolisms involving the emotions of love. The red carnation was said to symbolize "alas my poor heart". A striped carnation is said to indicate "refusal". A yellow carnation symbolizes "disdain".   The pink carnation has a bit more of a story.

It was believed that when Jesus was carrying the cross on the way to Calvary, he passed by his mother, Mary. Seeing her son, Mary's eyes filled with tears. When some of these tears fell to the ground, the first pink carnation immediately rose from the spot where the tears landed. Because of this, the pink carnation symbolizes "a Mother's love".

Please consider giving a bouquet of flowers for a Sunday morning. A lovely bouquet from the local florist is $40. You can honor or memorialize someone or something by choosing the words that will appear in the bulletin. The flower contact for the month of January is ? or call the church office (253-7288).

Happy New Year!

Our circle meetings have changed to the First Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Guiteras House or at the home of one of our members.  We light a candle and gather with prayer, which flows into our knitting, crocheting, and fellowship.

As each shawl or blanket is completed, it is passed around our circle and each person infuses the shawl with her own special blessing. In this way, each shawl carries the love and blessing of its maker and also the prayers of the whole circle. This is truly an experience of giving that blesses the giver as much as the one who receives! This warm and welcoming group would like to invite you to join us in our ministry if you enjoy knitting and/or crocheting - don't worry if you are just learning, so are we!!

Also, if you know of someone who would benefit from a prayer shawl, please don't hesitate to speak to Pastor Dan, Anita Randall, or any of the members of our group.  We appreciate your continued prayers of support for this ministry!

BOOKING MEETINGS AT FCC

Please call the office (253-7288) before you schedule a meeting in one of the meeting rooms of the church or Guiteras House. The room you may think is available may have already been booked. We have a lot of groups and committees using rooms during the week and have already made arrangements for the room.  It would not be fair if someone comes in without a reservation.
