Silent Auction

Harvest Bazzar 2

We need YOUR help to

gather special items for the Silent Auction. So put on your thinking caps and consider this:

Do you have a talent, skill, or service that you could offer?  Do you have any lovely, unused gifts in the closet from Christmases past?

Are there things residing in your attic that

would like a more active lifestyle? Do you have friends who would like an opportunity to introduce a new product or service to a new set

of future customers?  Do you own a business that could offer a service, item or gift certificate?  Are you are regular customer of a business that could offer a service, item or gift certificate?

We will be happy to supply a request letter on church letterhead that you can give to local businesses when asking for a donation.

Gift baskets are also welcome - collections for lovers of tea, pets, sports, gardening, health food...the list is endless! Do one by yourself

or gather a group to help share the expense.

For the first time ever the Silent Auction will be featured in an online catalog! Patrons can preview items before the day of the Bazaar. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

            1.   Share the auction catalog website with your friends                              through Facebook, e-mail and other social media means                       - it can be accessed directly at fccauction.weebly.com or

through a link on the FCC website - fccbristol.org -

2012 CHRISTMAS COOKIE WALK!

2012 Christmas Cookie WALK!

Can you believe it! Our 21st Annual Christmas Cookie Walk is coming up next month on Saturday, December 15th.  Last year was one of our very best years!  But that was only because of all of you who baked those yummy cookies!!  What is a "Christmas Cookie Walk" (for anyone who may be new)?  We have tables with mounds of dozens of varieties of cookies, candies, and fudge lined up in the DeWolf room.  Each customer chooses a larger (or small) box, puts on the glove in the box, then strolls down the tables selecting cookies and placing them in their box.  We even have small wax paper dividers that can be used to layer all those selections.  Then, we weigh the box and the customer pays for the cookies by the pound.  We even have Christmas tins to create a cookie gift box for that person on your Christmas list that has everything, including a sweet tooth.  This event offers the opportunity to get Holiday Cookies without spending the time to cook the many delicious varieties of cookies ourselves!  And, while this event is only scheduled from 10am to 12 noon, many times the cookies run out before the doors are closed!

Now, what really makes this a successful event, is all of our fine bakers in our church family!  Young and experienced, all come together and combined, offer a great variety of home baked Christmas cookies and treats.  So... it's time to start thinking of what type of cookies you'd like to bake for this event.  We need a couple of batches from each baker (at least 10 doz. of the "same" variety).   There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the DeWolf room where you can let us know what type of cookie you'd like to make (to ensure variety!)  We will even have a bake night (or two) in the church kitchen using our wonderful large convection oven to bake and decorate cookies.  (Really! It is lots of fun!!)

To start things off, below is just another delicious holiday cookie recipe!   Enjoy!!

UCC LOGO

UCC logo

What does the logo symbolize?

The symbol of the United Church of Christ comprises a crown, cross and orb enclosed within a double oval bearing the name of the church and the prayer of Jesus, "That they may all be one" (John 17:21). It is based on an ancient Christian symbol called the "Cross of Victory" or the "Cross Triumphant." The crown symbolizes the sovereignty of Christ. The cross recalls the suffering of Christ-his arms outstretched on the wood of the cross-for the salvation of humanity. The orb, divided into three parts, reminds us of Jesus' command to be his "witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The verse from Scripture reflects our historic commitment to the restoration of unity among the separated churches of Jesus Christ.

FLOWER COMMITTEE

Mums

NOVEMBER

The flower for the month of November is the chrysanthemum also known as "mums".  These flowers have been found in Chinese gardens for over 2,000 years and some think they may date back to 350 B.C.  Chrysanthemums are perennial which means that they come back every year.  There are about 30 different species of this flower and they are even considered a significant part of the food chain as certain larvae depend on them.   The word "chrysanthemum" comes from the Greek words "chrys" meaning "golden" and "anthemom" meaning flower".  The original chrysanthemums were golden in color.

Chrysanthemums are one of the most popular flowers (they are second only to the rose).  They are divided into two basic groups: "garden hardy" and "exhibition".   It is the "garden hardy" that I prefer because they take care of themselves and spread nicely.  The "exhibition" types take a bit of fuss.   This is the time of year that you see mums in most of the roadside stands, displayed on people's porches, and throughout the gardens.  I think that mums are truly a sign that we are now in fall; they almost transition us to winter as they make their last big show around Thanksgiving time.

Wouldn't it be nice to see mums in front of the church some Sunday morning?  Or, maybe a pot of mums in the Narthex to welcome us as we enter the church?  Please consider honoring someone or something by giving flowers from the florist or making arrangements to bring something in.    A bouquet from the florist is $40 and can be donated to a shut-in or someone in need of cheer who would know that their church is thinking of them.

Thanks!

Enjoy the chrysanthemums in all their fall colors everywhere you go!

PRAYER SHAWL GROUP and W.I.S.E.

Spiritual Growth

WISE: (Women in Spiritiual Education)

A book discussion or maybe a movie discussion. We meet the third Tuesday of every month in the Guiteras House from 6:30-8:30pm. 281 High Street.

 Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our circle meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Guiteras House or at the home of one of our members.  We light a candle and gather with prayer, which flows into our knitting, crocheting, and fellowship.  As each shawl or blanket is completed, it is passed around our circle and each person infuses the shawl with her own special blessing. In this way, each shawl carries the love and blessing of its maker and also the prayers of the whole circle. This is truly an experience of giving that blesses the giver as much as the one who receives!

This warm and welcoming group would like to invite you to join us in our ministry if you enjoy knitting and/or crocheting - don't worry if you are just learning, so are we!!  Also, if you know of someone who would benefit from a prayer shawl, please don't hesitate to speak to Pastor Dan, Anita Randall, or any of the members of our group.  We appreciate your continued prayers of support for this ministry!

Please visit the website www.shawlministry.com for additional information.

OCTOBER MEETING will be hosted by Sandra Tolley in her home.

BOOKING MEETINGS AT FCC

Please call the office (253-7288) before you schedule a meeting in one of the meeting rooms of the church or Guiteras House. The room you may think is available may have already been booked. We have a lot of groups and committees using rooms during the week and have already made arrangements for the room.  It would not be fair if someone comes in without a reservation.
