Brighter Picture for Federal Research Funding 

Congress provided increased funding for research in the fiscal year 2014 omnibus appropriations package it approved last week that funds all federal government activities through Sept. 30. "The legislation passed both chambers by a wide margin and signals a promising return to normal order for the federal budget and appropriations process," said Francine Newsome Pfeiffer, Rutgers assistant vice president for federal relations. Most of the cuts imposed by sequestration on research funding have been eased for FY14, she said, adding "Research funding across most other federal agencies fared quite well." Read more here.

Ambrose Appointed to Lead Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

Diane Ambrose, former assistant vice chancellor for research at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, has joined the Office of Research and Economic Development as senior associate director of research and sponsored programs. She will develop and lead the implementation of a strategic plan for the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which assists faculty in obtaining external funds to support their research, training and other scholarly pursuits. Updated Content for Researchers and Grant Facilitators on "Research Depot" SAKAI Site

ORED sponsors several SAKAI sites tailored to the needs of specific faculty. The content, which includes funding sources, templates for proposals and sample proposals, is regularly updated. Visit the Research Depot (here) to find a list of joinable sites for all Rutgers faculty, students and staff.  

Clinical Trials Compliance Workshop 

Stay in compliance (avoid $10,000-a-day penalties). You're invited to a lunch-and-learn session, "ClinicalTrials.gov: What You Need to Know to be in Compliance with Mandatory Reporting of Your Clinical Trial Results."

  • Learn the new and easy process to access the ClinicalTrials.gov registration website on the Human Subjects Protection Program website
  • Review the language and definitions that are required in ClinicalTrials.gov
  • Observe our ClinicalTrials.gov contact in HSPP navigate the website and answer questions you may have to stay in compliance

Sessions are 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in New Brunswick and Feb. 20 in Newark. Read more here. 

ORED Researcher Presenting Keynote at Bayer Life Sciences Symposium

David Augeri, inventor of a globally marketed diabetes drug and director of translational synthesis in the Office of Translational Science (OTS), is making a keynote presentation Jan. 23 at the Bayer Life Sciences Symposium in Berlin. OTS was launched this fall by the Office of Research and Economic Development with a focus on creating value in biomedical research universitywide by building interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the molecular, structural, imaging and biomedical sciences.
