SVDHA President's Message:

Happy National Dental Hygiene Month!! This month is all about oral health so go to ADHA's website to check out local events, contests, and enter to win prizes. SVDHA is celebrating this month with a very informative CE; "OMG it's OMT!" Kathy Winslow RDH is presenting on Orofacial Myofuntional Therapy (OMT). OMT is a hot topic for assisting with problems that we see in our dental patients everyday. This therapy can be part of the treatment protocol for issues such as sleep disordered breathing, malocclusion, poor cranial facial development, bruxism, and other noxious oral habits to name a few. To see more information and register for this class click here

As you may have seen, we have been having some technical difficulties with our website. We actually have a NEW web address to fix this problem. Please visit our new web address and bookmark it for easier access to CE registration, volunteer opportunies, and our calendar.

Many thanks for your continued support! We look forward to seeing you at the October meeting.

Course Description:

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) has found new resurgence as a recent hot topic for assisting with many of the problems facing dental patients today.  Current research reveals the importance of addressing orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) because of its association with total health.  OMT focuses on the neuromuscular re-education of the oral facial complex to normalize and correct chewing and swallowing patterns as well as the tongue, jaw, and lip postures.  This therapy can also be part of the treatment protocol for issues such as sleep disordered breathing, malocclusion, poor cranial facial development, bruxism, and other noxious oral habits to name a few. This lecture will navigate through etiologies, identification of, and disease correlations supported by evidence-based research.

Learning Objectives:
Learn how Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy can help you and your patients. Using a non-surgical perspective with this integrative therapy, a team effort is required to address the myriad of cumulative problems presented by our patients with orofaicial myofunctiontal discorders.

Learn to recognize OMDs, etiologies, and associated sleep disordered breathing:
1)  Identify OMDs
2)  Identify etiologies of OMD
3)  Assess frenums and their effects on your patients' function
4)  Learn how OMD affect cranial facial development and the relationship to sleep disordered breathing
5)  Learn the goals and benefits of Orofacial Myofunctional Treatment.
6)  Understand the scope of practice for Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
7)  Where can you find an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist?

Two Hands-on Practical Labs:
1)  Identify OMD's, cranial facial balance, and possible risks associated with skeletal and dental malocclusions
2)  Frenum assessment and specific protocol to address these restrictions

Legislative Report
Susan McLearan, RDHAP, MS
AB 502 (Chau) Dental Hygiene is on the Governor's Desk (if signed it becomes law, if not signed it becomes law, if vetoed, the bill dies).

Original Bill Summary: Would allow RDHAPs established in a Health Shortage Area to continue to practice if the area was no longer designated an HSA.  Would remove the prescription requirement for RDHAPs and would add RDHAPs, DAs and DDS to the long list of categories that may register as corporations. Would require insurance companies covering dental services to cover dental hygiene services whether the services are performed by a FDH or RDHAP and at the same rate for the same service.

Current Summary:  Only the portion relating to incorporation is in the final bill.

I attended the Little Hoover Committee's public hearing on Denti-Cal. CDHA was represented by our lobbying firm, President Jolley and IPP Karine Strickland.  Testimony was provided regarding how the attempt to change regulations regarding x-rays and pre-authorization for SRP would affect RDHAPs and the people they serve.  Many others testified about issues with Denti-Cal.  The commission members were well informed, thoughtful and asked many probing questions of presenters.

CDHA has been publically accused of a launching a negative campaign against a founder of the California Oral Health Coalition for the Aging and Developmentally Disabled on Facebook, YouTube and other media.  CDHA, after council with the association attorney, released a cease and desist letter to the organization which subsequently took down the posts.
