A message from your SVDHA President:

SVDHA kicked off the beginning of the continuing education season with a successful FREE member appreciation event hosted at the Valley Hi - North Laguna Library in Sacramento near Consumnes River College. Speakers Lisa Greenshields and Susan McLearan, both RDHAP's, utilized extensive research and their own pediatric and elder care practice experiences to provide an excellent overview of "Extended Practice Models in California and Beyond". Opportunities in the profession of dental hygiene continue to grow and we are extremely fortunate to have accomplished professionals like Lisa and Susan blazing the trail!

The prize wheel from last month's member appreciation event. Pictured: Stephanie Mozell, Kimi Kan, Ellen Standley and Larisa Figueroa.

These opportunities, though, require effort. Behind the scenes your local, state, and national professional organizations (SVDHA, CDHA, ADHA) are working diligently to protect your current scope of practice and to expand opportunities to underserved populations by utilizing dental hygienists. What does this mean for us? JOBS and interesting alternatives to traditional practice!

In order to continue to have a strong voice, however, we need members. If you are a current member of SVDHA, thank you! If you're on the fence, now's the time! SVDHA is actively recruiting members and is determined to make membership a great value by providing opportunities for convenient and reasonable CE, professional networking and camaraderie, and staying up to date with the latest news impacting your practice.

Many thanks for your continued support! We look forward to seeing you at the October meeting.

 Best,
 Jan Resler, RDH, MPA

 SVDHA President

Course Description:

Anyone frustrated with motivating patients to brush better to decrease decay, needs to be in this audience. Remineralization therapy is the latest and greatest dental hygiene procedure since the middle 1980's. With today's technology, dental hygienists become the key players in enamel repair by healing the oral environment. This course goes beyond better brushing, beyond sealants, beyond anything you've done before!

Shirley Gutkowski has eliminated all boundaries. Avoiding sugar is attainable without depending on patient compliance. The floss nag is dead.

Learning Objectives:

* Define good biofilm

* List biofilm diseases that lead to oral diseases

* Evaluate early diagnostic tools

* Create a Risk Factor Manager in the office

Legislative Update

Breaking News!

On Saturday, September 27, just three days before the September 30 deadline, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1174.  Having reached his desk
(passed both Assembly and Senate) it did not need his signature to become law, but did need to avoid his veto.

This act will amend Sections 1684.5, 1925, and 1944 of, add Section 1926.05 to, and to add, repeal, and add Sections 1753.55 and 1910.5 of, the Business and Professions Code, and add and repeal Section 128196 of the Health and Safety Code, and to amend Section 14132.725 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, relating to oral health.

Specifically, it would add the ability of RDAEFs, RDHs and RDHAPs to determine which x-rays to take prior to the patient having been seen by the dentist and allow the placement of Interim Therapeutic Restorations by those
auxiliaries under the circumstances describe. It outlines the training requirements for those new duties.  Medi-Cal requirement for face-to-face contact are removed and the way opened for billing for store and forward technology (tele-dentistry) which is already used by other medical
disciplines.  In addition the law sets current limits on fees charged to dental hygienists which are regulated by the Dental Hygiene Committee of California.

The journey to passage of this bill was somewhat arduous and contentious. In the end, both hygiene and dentistry agreed on most aspects of the bill. Which is, after all, the point of the system under which we live.

Pass the Hat

The passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 1174 is a remarkable accomplishment for the expansion of oral health care to vulnerable communities and for increasing dental hygiene scope of practice. There have been numerous groundbreaking laws that have passed in recent dental hygiene history. The breath of these bills is worth noting.

  • In 1976 the Registered Dental Hygienist was granted the right to administer local anesthesia as part of their extended functions.
  • In 1997, a new category of licensure, the Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) was established, after a long-standing safety record of providing dental hygiene services outside the traditional dental office setting.
  • In 2008, with the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 853, the Dental Hygiene Committee of California (DHCC) was created. The biggest accomplishment by far... California is the first and only state in which dental hygienists have autonomy and are self-regulated.

Each of these landmark bills was years in the making. The legislative process starts with an idea. In the case of the afore mentioned bills, the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA) had a vision to create new avenues for expanding dental hygiene scope of duties, improving efficacy in delivery of services, and addressing the need for care to our most at-risk populations.

I applaud the CDHA for all that they do on our behalf. With the advocacy and insight of the CDHA lobbying firm, as well as the financial support of CalHyPAC (the Political Action Committee of CDHA), the entire profession and each dental hygienist benefit. It's can be a challenge to follow each bill to its passage--attend the countless committee hearing, monitor the progress, and negotiate to resolve differences before repeating each process to see a bill to its end. CDHA has a vision for the profession and works tirelessly on your behalf. This is all done behind the scenes, but support of legislation is more important than ever.

Celebrate our past accomplishments. Support future endeavors. Your donations can help to secure the future.

These programs can include the fields of dental hygiene, industrial technology, allied health technology, emergency medical technicians and data management for health care. These fields require a Associate of Arts degree but now require a bachelor's degree to become competitive in the workforce. SVDHA at Sacramento Stand Down

Pictured above: Irene Wilson, Stephanie Mozell and Katie Conklin

Sacramento Stand Down event took place September 12th-14th at Mather Field. What is a Stand Down? In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover are removed from the field of combat to a place of relative safety and security. The military term, STAND DOWN, is used for such an action allowing a unit rehabilitative stay. This definition was taken directly from the Sacramento Stand Down volunteer pamphlet.

This event is for our local homeless Veterans. This was an educational outreach program for us. Participants involved were Lisa Greenshields, Stephanie Mozell, Irene Wilson, Katie Conklin, Students of Carrington College and their instructors Ann Wallis and Jan Carver.

The event was divided into 2 areas. One was education, legal service and living areas. The other side had Medical ,Vision and Dental. The California CareForce was handling this side. The most popular service was the Dental Hygiene delivery. All the equipment and power had to be brought in. It is truly amazing how it came together. Many man hours were spent putting up and taking down the mini city.
