American Academy for Oral Systemic Health Annual Scientific Session: Topic Highlights
| |
AAOS Annual Scientific Session Highlights by Toni Adams, RDH, MA
I was fortunate to attend the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health's third annual scientific session in Las Vegas September 22-24. I was blown away. Top scientists and speakers left my head spinning. Here are just a few highlights: - Poor oral health and oral microorganisms have been associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, autoimmune diseases, cancer, miscarriage, and the birth of pre-term low-weight babies. Women who are trying to conceive and have healthy mouths can get pregnant an average of two months sooner compared to women with periodontal disease.
- Chronic infections are caused by multiple, not single, organisms, which usually do not show up in cultures.
- Culturing for microorganisms in chronic infections will become obsolete. DNA testing will be the standard of the future.
- A number of salivary diagnostic tests to check for systemic inflammation and specific illnesses are available now and can be done in the dental office. More tests are being developed.
- Medical billing by dental offices is expanding.
- Attendees screened an important new documentary, Say AHHH: The Cavity in Healthcare Reform, about oral-systemic connections. Learn more and see the trailer at AAOSH.org
