Greetings!

A message from your SVDHA President:

Summer time is here!

Even though SVDHA does not hold CE meetings during the summer season, the board continues their hard work to plan the upcoming year. We are looking forward to some new and exciting changes, which include more Saturday CE and social events for networking and fun! Please email us if you have any ideas or suggestions.

SVDHA sent 15 delegates to the CDHA House of Delegates (HOD) in Long Beach May 31-June 2: Carol Lee (Trustee), Diann Azevedo, Nancy Burruel, Cathy Dornbush, Teri Emry, Elly Francisco, Ashley Goerlich, Lisa Greenshields, Kimi Kan, Stephanie Mozell, Sharon Golightly, Brenda Paquin, Jan Resler, Ellen Standley, Hannah Swedlund and Linda Wreford. Many of our delegates also served on other councils and committees, such as Membership Council, Student Relations Council and Tellers Committee. SVDHA thanks all of you for your time, hard work and dedication to our profession!

We were also excited to see many students attend the HOD weekend: Carrington- Fritz Baylosis Lejano, Monica Oviedo; Sac City- Amara Gibson, Samantha Ponik; UOP- Lindsey Jones, Tiffany Kao, Dalia Naser, Meghan Schrader, Ritika Sharma.  They spent numerous hours learning about parliamentary procedures and discussed the current HOD topics while participating in the Student House of Representatives (SHOR). Thanks for being enthusiastic about dental hygiene and CDHA!

Another exciting announcement is HOD will be held in Sacramento next year! If you have never attended this annual CDHA event, please plan to be there. Not everyone can be a delegate, however all CDHA members can still observe all HOD and SHOR activities. It's always a great experience to see our organized association in action!

I hope all of you have a fun and eventful summer! Please stay tuned for next year's CE meeting schedule through email announcements and our website!

Smiles,
Kimi Kan, RDHAP, BSDH

CDHA House Of Delegates
Long Beach, CA
May 31, 2013- June 2, 2013

What is CDHA House of Delegates?

House of Delegates (HOD) is a business meeting that deals with the business of the state association.  Delegates from each component in the state meet to discuss and vote on the direction the state association will take in certain matters.  Delegates vote for the officers, the budget, and the policies of the association. HOD is "the" meeting for the state association (CDHA).

Report of the CDHA House of Delegates:

The CDHA House of Delegates (HOD), held at the Long Beach Hilton, was a big success. On May 31 to June 2, Sacramento Valley Dental Hygienists' Association (SVDHA) sent 15 delegates and students from our three local dental hygiene schools (Carrington College and Sacramento City College in Sacramento, and University of Pacific in Stockton). Friday morning there as a free CE for registrants of the HOD (presentation was Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy). During the course of the weekend, CDHA addressed several important matters that affect dental hygienists and the profession. The Issues Forum offered an opportunity to hear three major topics. Dr. Paul Glassman discussed the Virtual Dental Home concept and the Health Workforce Pilot Project (HWPP) #172 which will provide data for new legislation that will expand the scope of practice for allied dental professionals, including RDH and RDHAP. Look to the upcoming CDHA Journal for details. Another important topic was the presentation of findings from the CDHA Task Force on alternative dental hygiene licensure mechanisms. Lastly, there was lively discussion on the CDT code 4355 and definitions for full mouth debridement.

Kimi Kan received the Sacramento Valley Component Outstanding Component Member Award. Carrington College Sacramento received an award for 100% Faculty Membership in CDHA. Congratulations!!

Other business conducted at the HOD included the election of new officers. Our new Executive Committee includes: Nadine Lavell (President), Karine Strickland (President-Elect), Julie Coan (Vice President of ), Laurel Bleak (Vice President of Administration and Public Relations), Lygia Jolley (Treasurer), and Susan Lopez (Immediate Past President). The CDHA budget for 2013-2014 was deliberated upon and passed. Proposed changes in Bylaws and Resolutions were considered. The HOD voted in favor of the formation of the new Alternative Practice Council. This new Council will result in the integrate of the RDHAPs in the efforts of the CDHA Strategic Plan and all dental hygienists will be united in our efforts. The consideration of a dues increase was defeated. More stringent criteria for the Life Member Category was adopted. Use of Social Media was added to policy. The definition of full mouth debridement and Directive to evaluate the definition of CDT Code 4355 will be referred to the CDHA President for action, with a report to be presented at the 2014 HOD.

The Student House of Representatives (SHOR) also met and all students in attendance were introduced to the workings of CDHA and parliamentary procedures, had the opportunity to discuss several issues, and voted for a student representative to represent the student voice during the proceedings of the HOD.

Our new CDHA management firm of six months, Jenifer McDonald Association Management, helped to facilitate the meeting in its entirety. Thank you so much for your bright and eager support every step along the way.

Health Care Rally at the Capitol Against Medi-Cal Cuts

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Health Care Rally at the Capitol was attended by thousands of people representing health

care providers and workers, doctors,

hospitals, organized health care associations and coalitions. Organizers hoped to convince lawmakers to roll back the 10 percent provider rate cut in the new state budget. An estimated $1 billion in Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal cuts would deny medical and dental care to many adults and seniors.

The Assembly and Senate have not proposed restoring the 10 percent provider rate cut in the new version of the state budget. The Senate, SB 640 (Lara), is urging to restore an earlier cut that would provide adult dental care to Medi-Cal recipients. Another bill from the Assembly, AB 900 (Alejo), provides limited restoration to hospital-based skilled nursing facilities. The two bills pending in the Legislature -hope to stop at least a portion of the budget cuts. However, these bills will need widespread bipartisan support to override the predicted veto by Governor Jerry Brown. This issue effects many of us and our patients/clients.

Check the status of these bills on leginfo.ca.gov
