From the Associate Minister, Rev. Heather Janules

As I write this column, I have just returned from the UUA's General Assembly in Providence, RI, along with a number of other staff, delegates and participants. It is impossible to encapsulate all of my GA experience in a short column so let it suffice to say that, above all, GA reminded me of the power of human stories.

This awareness began during Ministry Days, the series of programs for ministers before General Assembly. Each year, Ministry Days includes "Collegial Conversations." These programs range from informational workshops to, as the name suggests, opportunities for ministers to connect in personal ways. I attended a Collegial Conversation between female ministers of different generations. (Men were invited to attend too but were asked to bear silent witness to these stories.)

The format was simple; "Boomer" ministers gathered in a circle and, as the rest of the room observed, each person had two minutes to speak to their experience of gender and ministry. Once they were done speaking, the "Generation X" ministers (including me) did the same, followed by the "Millenial" ministers. It was a powerful experience. I left this Collegial Conversation with a clear sense of how much things have changed over the years but also how much they have remained the same. Despite being in a denomination where more than half the clergy are women, stained glass ceilings still exist.

"Thoughts Coming Away From My Sixty-Fifth College Union"

Reverend Kenneth Torquil MacLean

Worship Associate: Bob Harrison

"This was quite a weekend in Providence, with the Brown Campus Dance, the class of '49 dinners, and then the transformation of the campus with chairs for about 900 graduates and their families and friends. It provided me with a starting place for what I would like to say to you in my sermon. That occasion will also be a reunion, and I look forward to it with great joy."

Reverend Ken Maclean was minister of Cedar Lane from 1972 to 1992. Since then he has served the UU Church of the Desert in Rancho Mirage, California, worked at the UUA for President John Buehrens in charge of international relations from 1994 to 1999.

He is currently retired and received the Distinguished Service Award from the denomination at the General Assembly in Providence on June 28.

Caring Community

Cedar Lane is a Caring Community. If you learn of a congregant in need, please offer support or assistance. Two other ways we support each other are through the We Care and Pastoral Visitor ministries.  We Care addresses short-term practical needs (food delivery, a ride to a doctor.) Cedar Lane is organized by neighborhoods with chairpersons who coordinate volunteer support.  Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags and displayed on a map in the church office (which includes names of Neighborhood chairs.) The Pastoral Visitors are lay pastoral ministers who offer short-term emotional and spiritual support. You may contact the Pastoral Visitors' team by filling out a card on the candle table in the Auditorium, by contacting Associate Minister, Heather Janules, or by looking for the members with the purple "Pastoral Visitor" ribbon on their name tag.

Congratulations are with Eric Flamer and Heather McIntosh who celebrated their wedding on Saturday, June 21, at Cedar Lane.

Condolences are with Edgard and Carol Bertaut (Neighborhood 23) with the death of Edgard's father after a long illness. You may read the obituary here.

Our thoughts are with Martha Giovanelli (N4) who had another stay in the hospital and is now recovering in rehab care.

Healing wishes are with former member Andy Streich, now living in Warren, PA. Andy underwent cardiac bypass surgery this week. He invites Cedar Lane friends to keep up with his progress and stay connecting through his CaringBridge site: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/andystreich.

We wish Helen Strang a happy housewarming as she is transitioning to a new home at Asbury Methodist Village.

If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation.  If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Heather Janules, Associate Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care or Abhi Janamanchi, Senior Minister.
