"Stories of Our Lives with the Animals - A Service of Blessing"
Rev. Heather Janules, Rev. Abhi Janamanchi and Karen Lee Scrivo
Worship Associate: Bob Harrison

Cedar Lane celebrates its annual intergenerational animal blessing service by reflecting on ancient and modern tales of human and animal lives coming together in friendship. This worship service is our religious education for the morning so there are no traditional RE classes. We will also share our offering plate with MCPAW to help build a new animal shelter in our county.

To honor the needs of the allergic, our 9 a.m. service will include virtual animals only while friendly, vaccinated and leashed/contained live animals are welcome at the 11 a.m. service. Humans with live animals should gather in the courtyard by 10:30 a.m. to line up for the Animal Parade.  If you would like to honor or remember an animal that cannot be brought to church, please email their photo, along with their name, to Heather Janules at [email protected] by midnight TONIGHT, October 18.

Volunteers for the Service:

Ushers:  9 a.m.: Kay Bugenhagen, Jack & Judy Rodgers, Laura Pillette

11 a.m.: Glenis Bellais, Tod Chernikoff, Mary Beth Nowinski, Ann Meyer

Coffee Servers:  10 a.m.: Kate Harrison; noon: Glenis Bellais

Audio: Rick Lohmeyer

Welcome Center:  10 a.m.: John Gubbings; noon: Michael Thoryn

The flowers in the sanctuary were arranged by Barbara Potzick in celebration of the wedding Carole Richardson and Carolyn Morrissey.

The Sunday Morning Forum meets at 10:10 in the Chalice House between services.
This Sunday:  Life in a Surgical Tent in Afghanistan. Remember M*A*S*H?  Fast forward 60 years to Afghanistan. Huge technological improvements in medical care but the same Army medical ingenuity on overdrive. Col. Fred Lough, veteran of two surgical deployments to Afghanistan, will share some riveting stories and slides of life in a surgical tent on the front lines.

Caring Community

Cedar Lane is a Caring Community. One way we support one another is through the We Care ministry.

We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers.  Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic neighborhoods, with chair-persons who coordinate support.  Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.

Healing wishes are with Sylvia Fisher (Neighborhood 13) who recently underwent surgery at Suburban Hospital.

Our thoughts remain with Bud Mueller (N26) who had another short hospitalization after a fall. He is recovering at home.

A reminder: Peter and Connie Nissley (N5) will have their last Sunday at Cedar Lane before moving to Seattle this coming Sunday. All are welcome to a farewell potluck lunch after the second service in the Chalice House on 10/20 to celebrate their time in the Cedar Lane community.

From the family of Dorothy Bothe: All are welcome to a brief service at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2013, to celebrate her life. The service will be at Cedar Lane. A nameplate will be added to the Name Wall in the Memory Garden where her ashes will be spread to join those of her husband, Hank Bothe. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to the Rev. Abhi Janamanchi.

If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation.  If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Heather JanulesAssociate Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care or Abhi Janamanchi, Senior Minister.

Together (Diversity Team)

Will You Help Us Get Our Act "Together"?

The "Together" team is a new CLUUC group committed to fostering diversity within our Cedar Lane community and beyond.  "Together" will continue the work of the former "LGBT Task Force" and "CLARITY" (Cedar Laners Against Racism - in This Together - Yes!"), while broadening the scope to include other areas of diversity such as age and class.

Any and all who have an interest in diversity efforts are encouraged to join us on Sunday, October 27 from 12:15 - 3 p.m. in the library for our planning "advance" (not "retreat").  For your convenience, we will provide a light lunch for a suggested donation of $5.  RSVPs are encouraged to Betsy Devlin-Foltz ([email protected]) to help us plan the food.

The "Together" planning team with Rev. Heather and Rev. Abhi will share our thoughts on the vision of this ministry of inclusion, and the structure of the group, leaving room for your feedback and discussion. Then "together" we will plan the year's programming. We're calling this an "advance" because we are eager to move forward furthering our goals without delay.

The Alliance

Cedar Lane Alliance is an affiliate organization of Cedar Lane open to all interested men and women.  We offer programming supportive of our UU principles.  The Alliance took form in 1953, one of the first programs to emerge when we were very new and meeting in the Chevy Chase Women's Club.  In those days we were a very young group of active energetic women. In the 70s we invited men to join us.  We are a vital curious group interested in the issues of the day and in supporting church life.  All are invited to join us at our monthly potluck  luncheon and program in the auditorium on the second Thursday of each month. Bring a main dish, salad or dessert to serve eight.

One of our long lasting initiatives has been the responsibility for memorial receptions which we began in the early 70s at Ken MacLean's suggestion.  We have now been doing this for forty years!  Families are very appreciative.   A crew of two Alliance members takes on the major responsibility and invites others to help set up, take down and serve; other volunteers bake cookies.  We are always looking for bakers and reception helpers.  If you would enjoy participating in either, or both, please be in touch with Glenis Bellais.

Look for the Alliance table in the lounge the first Sunday of each month.

From the Director of Music

Henry Sgrecci

This Sunday we sing songs about animals, strong beliefs, and peace.  Bingo is one of just a few animals to have a special song named after him, and just about everyone knows the song.  The Ring Out Bell Choir will play an arrangement to help us learn about Bingo's Travels across the United States.  The Children's Choir sings A Quiet, Patient Spider.  This song may sound a bit spooky but it can serve as a personal story for some of us, as we move through life, waiting for that perfect time to launch ourselves into a special class, or a new book, or a new sport, or even a new friendship!  The Youth Choir sings "Stand Upon the Rock!" which has a neat beat, some fun harmonies, and a great message about standing strong for what you believe.  A Prayer for Peace is a relatively new song for SATB choir.  It is based upon the prayer that many know as the Prayer of St. Francis.  St. Francis not only looked out for the animals, he also looked out for the poor and the weak.  In this song it is said that St. Francis asked the Lord to let him act as the peacemaker on earth; to be the one who would demonstrate how to replace hatred with love, replace guilt with forgiveness, and replace doubt with faith.  The postlude was first heard in the 1961 Walt Disney Film, "101 Dalmatians."

Special thanks to members of the Children's Choir, Youth Choir, and Ring Out Bells for providing such inspirational music during this Sunday's Blessing of the Animals service.  We are also grateful to Susan Easterly and Susannah Vesey for keeping our music alive and well in Sunday's services and to soloists Emma Vawter, Tracy Esho, and Kevin Miller for providing such a beautiful vocal blend during the Offertory.

Thank you Connie Nissley, for your many, many years of dedicated singing as a member of the CLUUC Choir.  We will miss you!

The Pilgrim Trio brings its special blend of Klezmer Music to Concerts at Cedar Lane on Saturday evening, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.   You're bound to hear tunes that will make you want to clap, sing, whistle, and maybe even dance in the aisles.  Admission is free and parking is plentiful.  Set the date aside and invite your friends.  We'll see you there!
