Upcoming Sundays
May 12, 2013, 10 a.m.
"The Slow Apocalypse: Ethical Reflections for Living on a Mortal Planet"
The Rev. Heather Janules
Worship Associate: Kathleen Reedy
There is an environmental crisis looming...and it is not global warming. Looking far into the future, there will come a time when the sun will burn out and life cannot be sustained on Earth. Knowing that true sustainability is impossible; does this change how we live our lives now? At the invitation of last year's highest bidder at Cedar Lane's auction, this service will celebrate Mother's Day by reflecting on the "deep future" of Mother Earth and the choices that lie before us as temporary residents of an eventually freezing planet.

We Care
We Careis a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers. Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support. Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.
It is with sadness that we share the news that Norm Lauben (Neighborhood 29) has entered hospice care. He is currently at Casey House in Rockville and will be transferred home next week to receive services there. Calls and visits are welcome but you may wish to call first to find a good time to drop by. Our love is with his wife, Sally, and their family.
If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation. If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Heather Janules, Associate Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care. You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

Wanted: Cedar Lane Unsung Heroes!
Today is the LAST DAY FOR NOMINATIONS!!
Who are the "Unsung Heroes" in our midst? Who are the members who have contributed their time and talents to the life of the church? The Cedar Lane Board of Trustees is soliciting your assistance in identifying these dedicated individuals who have volunteered in significant ways to Cedar Lane so that they can be recognized with Unsung Hero Awards.
Nominees for awards must be members of the church and cannot have been honored in this way in the last five years, nor have received compensation for the services for which they are being honored. Please contact board member Anne Fretz at 301-652-3589 or email her your nominations along with a description of their service to the church at annefretz@gmail.com.
Nominations must be received by Friday, May 3rd. The board will vote on the nominations at the May 21 meeting, and the Unsung Heroes will be honored at a Sunday service in June.

Stewardship Committee
For the upcoming fiscal year, 2013-14, we have 228 pledges for $461,172. That works out to be an average of $2,023 per pledging unit. Of these pledges 12 of them are new pledges totaling $5,270 or $439 per unit. We had 19 folks have to reduce their pledges over what they gave last year by $11,500. 90 pledging units increased their pledges by $44,614 over what they pledged the previous year. Great news! Now we just need those who have not yet pledged to do so. To pledge online click here. You may also fill out a pledge card in the Lounge after the service on Sundays, or turn it in to the office. Any questions about your this year's pledge please contact Sara Deshler, Church Administrator, sdeshler@cedarlane.org.
For our current fiscal year we are still well short of our pledge goal of $920,000. At present we have 532 pledging units for $862,880, a shortfall of $57,120. We have received $749,000 to date-please completed your pledge as soon as possible-the funds are greatly needed.
Questions? Ideas? Please contact Ardene Shafer, Stewardship Chair, srs.ars@gmail.com.

International Concerns Coalition
Afghanistan
Collections for Afghan orphanages served by Kabultec are running low this year, so they have extended the drive into May. Needed are used clothes for kids ages 7 and up, shoes, blankets, sporting goods, picture books, games, Legos, small stuffed animals, small dolls, small jigsaw puzzles, and Play Dough. Teachers and employees are also in need of baggy professional clothing and shoes. A complete list can be found on the table in the downstairs lobby, and donations should be placed in the large, Afghanistan-labeled collection box. To get a receipt, please submit an itemized list of your donation to annettecedarlane@spamex.com. Thanks!

Annette Goes To Africa!
The photo here was taken in early April by a U.S. nurse who visited 2 of our 3 schools. Our International Concerns Coalition Co-Chair and 7th grade session 2 RE co-teacher, Annette, will be traveling to Africa mid-month to visit two projects supported by Cedar Lane: The Kakenya Center for Excellence (school for girls in Maasai Kenya) and AMCAV (Association of Christian Mothers for Assistance to the Vulnerable--helping raped women and educating their children) in eastern DR Congo. Huge thanks go to Lou Mayo for arranging for a donation of a telescope for Kakenya Center! Due to already-high extra baggage fees resulting from Annette's having to carry this, uniform donations from two Baltimore schools, plus the generous toiletry donations from Cedar Laners, we're calling a stop to any further collection items for Africa. Contact: annettecedarlane@spamex.com.

Cedar Laners work with Rebuilding Together Montgomery County April 20, 27 and 28. Last workday is May 4.
So far 16 Cedar Laners have worked on a local house in Wheaton in support of 2013 Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC)/Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church project weekend. The amount of work completed during the 3 days on the home is huge. Starting from the front of the home, the work completed includes:
- The wood supporting the front window was removed, replaced and painted,
- The front fascia and soffit over the front of the porch was removed and replaced.
- The soffit and fascia over the main entrance way was removed and replaced,
- The concrete support structure of the front stairs was cleaned, patched and repainted.
- The metal railing around the front porch was cleaned and repainted,
- A new railing for the stairs was installed.
- A new overhead porch light was installed.
- In the back of the house the wooden stairs and railings from the back door were removed and replaced,
- The back door and all trim was removed and replaced (big job, learned a lot),
- The broken basement railing was removed and replaced.
- The trim around several basement windows was cleaned, repaired and painted,
- The cement wall leading to the basement was patched and painted,
- Multiple smoke detectors were installed in the home,
- The commode in the basement was snaked,
- The back patio area was cleared and cleaned up and made usable (looks great),
- A truck load of debris was removed from the back patio and yard,
- And finally the chain link fence along the side and the front of the home was repaired.
Quite a list, eh?
There are still 2 remaining things to do on Saturday, May 4, paint and caulk. The front railing out the main entrance needs to be painted, the trim (inside and outside) around the new back door needs to be painted, the back porch, steps and railing all need to be painted. the front window area needs to be caulked and the back door (inside and out) needs to be caulked. So a few more people are needed to help us across the finish line. If you can help please let Mike Burski (301-523-2827) know. If you can and you would like to help a local resident, now is your last chance. We will start work at 8:30 and probably be done by 12:30.
That will give plenty of time to relax and prepare for a fun night at the auction. Contact Mike for further information. Youth are invited to participate but the minimum age is 14.

Music Notes
Paul Halley's Freedom Trilogy bears the rhythmic vitality of the many arrangements he prepared while performing as a member of the Paul Winter Consort. In Freedom Trilogy, he presents the medieval-like chant of the 16th Century "Kyrie" from Missa de Angelis within his own asymmetrical rhythmic setting for women's voices. The second component of the trilogy pairs two delightful and energetic South African songs of the 20th Century; "Halleluya! Pelo tsa rona" (Halleluya! We sing your praises) and "Siyahamba" (We are marching in the light of God).
This Sunday the Choir bids adieu to longtime soprano, Susan Clark, and newcomer alto, Jessica Bland. We are grateful for the music in their hearts and the joyful voices of song that they have contributed to the CLUUC Choir. Thank you, Susan and Jessica!
