We Care
We Careis a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers. Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support. Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.
Our condolences are with Leonard, Linda, Carol and Bob Gianessi (Neighborhood 17) with the death of Leonard's mother, Genevieve, who passed on April 14 at age 94. We celebrate with Mike Brudin (N31) and his long-term sweetheart Judy Henderson who will marry on Saturday, April 20. Hopes for healing are with Dan Wilson (N7) who is currently at Georgetown Hospital to receive radiation and chemotherapy to treat a recurrence of brain cancer.
We send early birthday wishes to long-time member Marjorie Melton who will turn 95 on April 27 and encourage those who know her to send a celebratory card. Her address is: Marjorie Melton/ c/o Royale Meadows/1400 7th Ave. SE/Room 616/Sioux Center, IA 51250. Her niece writes: "She is doing very well and misses her friends at Cedar Lane. She LOVES the monthly newsletter and reads it front to back!"
Best wishes are with Rich and Susan Clark (N23) as they prepare to relocate to Seattle after 26 years of membership and leadership at Cedar Lane. We will miss them! They welcome all Cedar Laners to a farewell open house at the Chalice House, 12:30 (or so) after Spring B Classes on their last Sunday with the congregation, May 5.
Our hearts go out to Lisa Tunick (N12) and her family with the death of her aunt Agnes, a beloved matriarch, on April 12.
And, in this week when we have heard of so much fear and suffering in the world, we are reminded of the value of caring for ourselves, caring for one another and, when necessary, turning off the news to walk outside and experience life, new and emerging.
If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation. If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Heather Janules, Associate Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care. You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

Upcoming *CLARITY Event
All invited! Sunday, April 28,

"How Race Impacts Health Status - How Communities Can Help"

Colleen Meiman is a Senior Health Policy Analyst within the Federal Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). She has spent the past 25 years studying and working in the field of health policy.
Compared with Caucasians in the US...
- Infants born to African American women are 1.5 to 3 times more likely to die
- African American men are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer
- Hispanic women are more than 1.5 times as likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
- African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives are twice as likely to have diabetes.
What causes these disparities? Does the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") address them?
* Sponsored by CLARITY (acronym stands for "Cedar Laners Against Racism -- In This Together -- Yes!"). Questions? Contact Nancy Janssen at nancyjanssen@verizon.net.

Help us put local legs on the
2013 Walk for Our Grandchildren:
Keep fossil Fuels in the Ground -
Climate action now
June 15-22, Camp David to the White House
Initial Maryland Organizing Meeting - Wednesday April 24, from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Cedar Lane. Five activists from Asheville, NC, where the walk was initiated, will be in Maryland from April 22-28 to map the route in detail and meet with local climate activists from CCAN, the Sierra Club, 350.org, Interfaith Power and Light, and the UUC Social Justice Committee.
Elders by tradition protect the interests of future generations. This Walk draws on that tradition and seeks to dramatize the critical state of our climate and the urgent need to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline and keep all fossil fuels in the ground.
We are looking for activist allies in all the communities along the route to help us plan and carry out the walk. Those communities include: Urbana, Frederick, Germantown , North Bethesda, Bathesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Hyattstown.

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
This Sunday our young musicians lead us in musical worship. The Youth Handbell Choir rings
Ride the Chariot; a challenging arrangement that includes the spiritual "Swing Low" and that employs various techniques and numerous bell changes. The Children's Choir, mindful of the tragedies in Boston earlier this week, sings a favorite song about overcoming fears and dreaming of what can be. The Youth Choir, also mindful that life will pose uncertainties and occurrences that are not always pleasant, sings John Lennon's lyrics "Imagine there's no heaven....no hell below us, above us only sky. Imagine all the people living for today." Gruppo Piccolo sings a lovely a cappella song;
Hold Me, Rock Me by Brian Tate. The Canadian composer incorporatedlyrics from several spirituals in order to convey his message that wherever our journey takes us, and whenever and however we depart this earth, we'll have a home on the other side.
Special thanks to the young singers of the Children's Choir: Sylvia Eisenberg, Tessa McCollum, Natalia Malanin Dunn, Myles Carr, Linnea Hultman, Mia Ellis, Ian Ellis, and Adam Falcigno; the Youth Choir: Franny McCollum, Clair Bergey, Kaleigh Young, Sarah Falcigno, Christine Green, Dominic Manzella, and Walter Ellis; accompanist Susan Easterly, and members of Gruppo Piccolo. Your music offers us thoughtful reflection and hope. We are grateful for your dedication and contributions to our services this Sunday.

CLUUC/RTMC Project day is only 9 days away and the prep day is this Saturday April 20! If you can spare a couple of hours Saturday afternoon, we could use a few hardy souls. We will begin around 1 in the afternoon and probably go for about 3-4 hours. We will do prep work cement repair on the front steps, and also some cleaning up of the railing for work on the 27th. We also will be doing some paint scraping to prepare the back stairs and areas in preparation for the work the following weekend. All participants will receive a shiny new white RTMC t-shirt to add to your collection. It will serve as a fond memory of your work helping a local resident of Montgomery County. Water will be available on-site, but you should bring your lunch with you. If you can help out, please contact Mike at the email above. All volunteers have to be registered with RTMC, so let Mike know if you can help as soon as possible. If you can only work part of the day, that is fine, you will not be turned away.
Join the Interim RE Task Force for brunch in the lobby on April 28 before the Coming of Age service. It's a chance to meet the Task Force members and learn about their work. There will, of course, be time for discussion as we look at what we can learn from this experienced group.
