We Care
We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers. Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic
neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support. Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.
Best wishes are with Norm Lauben (Neighborhood 29) who is now home from Washington Hospital Center after some tests and meetings with his physicians.
Congratulations are with Ralph and Janice Krause (N6) who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 13th!
Healing wishes are also with Bernie Bloom (N11) who is now recovering at home after undergoing surgery to receive a cardiac pacemaker/defibrillator.
If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation. If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Heather Janules, Associate Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care. You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
We welcome Rev. Abhi Janamanchi to Cedar Lane with bells ringing and with songs that celebrate the goodness of prayer, the coming of spring, and the renewal of spirit.
Douglas Wagner's simple yet, beautiful arrangement of our first hymn song Dona Nobis Pacem is brought to life through the interweaving melodies of our multi-generational handbell choir, Bell Canto. Oregonian composer Shawn Kirchner first heard Wana Baraka being sung by a group of Kenyans who participated in the 1994 Agricultural Missions International Consultation in Sogakope, Ghana. His arrangement utilizes overlaying rhythmic textures to grow the work from a whisper to a bursting collage of sound.
The Waking is a new work from Giselle Wyers, Associate Director of Choral Studies at the University of Washington. This gifted composer has employed multiple texts in changing rhythmic patterns to deliver the poetry of the late Theodore Roethke, a Pulitzer Prize winning poet and teacher at the Univ. of Washington. It is easy to envision a "stroll across an open field" with Ms. Wyers lilting, light-hearted style.
Pop singer and composer Carly Simon was inspired by both the city of New York and the poetry of Walt Whitman when she composed her hit song Let the River Run in 1988. The heavy drum beats are not accidental - she said that she wanted the jungle-type beat to help juxtapose the many facets of the big city. The song, which she composed for the movie, "Working Girl" in 1988," went on to garner an unprecedented trifecta, winning an Oscar Award for best original song in 1989, a Golden Globe award for best original song, and a Grammy Award for best song written specifically for a motion picture. We sing the song this Sunday with an eye toward running rivers, warming earth, blooming flowers, and renewed spirits!
Special thanks to our wonderful Choir, to the ringers of Bell Canto, to Chris Mauro and his drum, and to accompanist Thomas Guthrie for bringing such vibrant music to the sanctuary this Sunday.
Call your friends, get a baby sitter, gather up your neighbors, and reserve next Saturday night, April 13 to get a prime seat for Terry Burrell's one-woman show, "An Evening with Ethel Waters." Ms. Burrell will be accompanied at the piano by Daryl Waters who orchestrated the music for the hit Broadway show "Memphis." It will be a night for Cedar Laners to remember. Admission is free. We'll see you there!

Environmental Task Force
Home Energy Workshop with Interfaith Power & Light
Cedar Lane library
Sunday, April 14, 1 - 2:30 p.m.
Are you a homeowner? Chances are that professional weatherization could save you 15-35% in home heating costs!
Homeowners from local congregations are joining together to care for creation by cutting energy waste in their homes. This is also a great way to make your home more comfortable and to save money on your energy bills! By joining together in this process, we can encourage each other to act out our values while also accessing deep discounts on energy efficiency upgrades and supporting local, socially conscious businesses.
In the workshop, we'll reflect on our own responsibility as Unitarian Universalists to consider the impact of our electricity use, as well as hear about a program from Groundswell, a local nonprofit that is working to help homeowners save energy and create good green jobs at the same time.
*A light lunch will be provided!
RSVPs appreciated! Please email
program@gwipl.org.

Beyond the Church
Current, Past and/or Future Cedar Lane volunteers,
Cedar Lane/Rebuilding Together Montgomery County Project day 2013 is less than18 days away! This year's project house is in Wheaton. Project day is Saturday April 27. Greg has done a great job in scoping all of the work and identifying materials needed. Last weekend we got to go "shopping" at the RT warehouse, where they have a lot of donated goods. I gotta say that that is fun. Looking at all of the materials and trying to decide if we could use it in our project or not was neat. We used the guideline - if in doubt, take it for the job, if we don't use it, we can bring it back after project day. What we couldn't get at the warehouse, we will use our budget to get from Lowes or Home Depot. Over this past weekend we also planned what work should be done when. We will need a few volunteers to help out on Saturday April 20. Beginning around noon, we will do prep work cement repair on the front steps, and also some cleaning up of the railing for work on the 27th.
We also will be doing some paint scraping to prepare the back stairs and areas in preparation for the work the following weekend. If you can spare the afternoon of April 20th, let me know over the next week so we know how many to expect.
RT will have certified lead paint abatement professionals do any and all lead abatement work before we begin our work. There were a couple of small areas that were identified as having been painted previously with lead based paint. These will be worked by the professionals. Most of the painted surfaces that we are working near, tested negative for the presence of lead.
Post April 27, the work we have identified is painting in the back on the deck and stairway down to the basement. Of course additional work could be added if we don't finish everything on the 27. We are now up to about 16 volunteers for Saturday April 27. Again, if you are still thinking about helping out and haven't let me know yet, sign up - we can definitely use you. We have segmented tasks so that interference between work groups is minimized. If you can help out on any of the work days, let me know.
Important Administrivia!!! All volunteers must register either on the Rebuilding Together website or hard copy the day of the event. Registering on line makes it much easier. That way we don't have to worry about paper work on project day. For volunteers under the age of 18, we will still have to get a parent/guardian hard copy signed form on project day.
To register electronically - Go to the RTMC website www.rebuildingtogethermc.org. Click on Spring Rebuilding Day and the third item on the page is "Volunteer Registration." Just enter your name and follow the prompts. At the appropriate spot, select Cedar Lane as the group.
For more information, contact Mike Burski at

NIH Community Orchestra

in the Cedar Lane sanctuary
Featuring Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, the world premier of Psalmnos by Timothy Dusenbury, and more!
Hi! My name is Karen Plaskon. I was referred to you by All Souls Church in D.C.
We are a family of UUs from Bolton MA, worshiping at First Parish Church of Stow and Acton in Stow MA. My son is a 19 year old 2nd year college student at Colby College in ME. He will be doing an 8 week internship at NIH in Bethesda this summer and is looking for housing. We are pursuing housing options at local colleges but are also looking for something that might be a bit less expensive and thinking that it would be nice if he had some connection in the area.
So, we thought we'd try pursuing the UU connection to see if you might know anyone in your congregation who might enjoy hosting a wonderful young man for several weeks this summer! He doesn't have any means of transportation, so would have to either be near the facility or have access to the metro line.
Thanks for any help! - Karen
