Attention Cedar Laners!
April 14 to 21 will be Candidating Week. This is often one of the most exciting and invigorating experiences a congregation can go through. During that time there will be many opportunities to meet and get to know the ministerial candidate and to experience this minister, new to the congregation, as a worship leader and spiritual teacher.
Throughout this period of discernment, it may be tempting for some to ponder, even not altogether consciously, "Is this minister the perfect person for our church?" It's a human impulse to want such things, but of course we know that perfection is not possible. The important question for everyone (including the candidate) is: can we see this relationship leading to greater courage, greater compassion, more vitality and hope and joy for all of us and for all that we serve? Every other consideration is secondary.
- Rev. Evan Keely, Interim Senior Minister

Upcoming Sundays
April 7, 2013, 9 and 11 a.m.
"Returning to the Vineyard"
The Rev. Heather Janules
Worship Associate: Jim Laurenson
Like "sabbath," a sabbatical is an intentional time apart from regular work for rest, renewal and deeper reflection. As is our tradition, our Associate Minister will draw from her three-month sabbatical to reflect on the meaning of work and the value of working together as we prepare to meet our Senior Minister candidate (April 14-21.)
Forum: The State of Our County and Budgeting for the Future, with Isaiah Leggett, Montgomery County Executive.

We Care
We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers. Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic
neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support. Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.
Pastoral Request: Our thoughts and prayers with all those individuals and families who experience their lives glaringly front and center at the U.S. Supreme Court. Not easy to see your love, marriage, and parenting ability in the public debate and crucible! We rejoice that the UUA and Cedar Lane support
marriage equality and say love makes a family, over many years. Give someone a hug, and say that you stand on the side of love.
We celebrate with Michael Thoryn and Patricia Phillips (N12) that their daughter, the Rev. Claire Feingold Thoryn, is the candidate for settled ministry at Follen Church Society Unitarian Universalist in Lexington, MA. FCSUU's candidate week runs into early May and that's a good thing: Claire's second daughter with husband Ben, Leona Rose, was born March 23.
April 4 is the 90th birthday to Margie Wright (N16), still enjoying giving music lessons and the active life. Hope her day is joyful, and please wish her happy birthday!
CL Staff Custodian Pedro Diaz has an improving back after injury of several weeks. He plans to be back at work on Sunday, March 31. Please let him know you are glad he is better!
The Rev. Heather Janules returns from 3-month sabbatical this Sunday, March 31 as well. Hooray for the gift of sabbatical, and know Heather will have much to tell in the April 7 sermon on her adventures.
And speaking of work, the Rev Louise Green concludes at Cedar Lane with much thanks and appreciation for the opportunity to be Sabbatical Minister. Louise will work the next quarter on immigration organizing with the AIM affiliate, VOICE, in Northern Virginia; and continue as a spiritual director and yoga teacher. On July 1, she is delighted to become the full-time Interim Minister of Congregational Life at River Road UUC in Bethesda, for two years.
If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation. If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Heather Janules, Associate Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care. You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

Environmental Task Force
There's no better time to get involved in some good clean fun than at the 25th anniversary of the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. Since 1989 the Alice Ferguson Foundation has removed over 6 million pounds of trash from the Potomac with the help of volunteers like you.
This staggering amount of litter is a small portion of what is in our Watershed. Litter makes its way from our streets into our waterways, threatening our water quality, putting the health of our family at risk, and hurting the local economy. You can be part of the solution. Help us build clean lands, safe water, and healthy lives for the region by making this year the largest cleanup event yet!
Join us on Saturday, April 6, 2013 where thousands of dedicated volunteers at hundreds of cleanup sites will work to restore the beauty and integrity of the region.
For information on how to volunteer, lead a cleanup site, or sponsor the event visit www.PotomacCleanup.org or call 202-973-8203."

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
Members of Bell Canto present an Easter greeting from the Choir Loft as they ring a prelude on the Easter Hymn and follow with a bell peel introducing our opening hymn. During this Sunday's early service Emma Vawter and Thomas Guthrie perform the lovely aria With verdure clad from Franz Haydn's oratorio "The Creation." The text of the aria is taken from the book of Genesis and speaks of earth's unfolding beauty. Haydn began composing the oratorio at age sixty-five and spent two years completing what many believe is his greatest achievement. It premiered in 1799.
During the second service the Choir sings Alan Naplan's song Al Shlosha D'varim, which was commissioned in 2000 by the Combined Choir of the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington in honor of Austin H. Kiplinger. It is a beautiful setting of a phrase from the Pirkei Avot (Jewish morality laws).
Aficionados of classical music know Giacomo Puccini as composer of delightful operas in the romantic style. Born in Lucca, Tuscany and with several generations of male descendants serving as maestro di cappella of the Catedrale di San Martino in Lucca, it is not surprising that his early efforts centered on music of the church. In 1880, at the age of twenty-one, Puccini presented for his graduation exercise at the Milan Conservatory his "Messa di Gloria," a full mass for choir, orchestra, and soloists. This morning the Choir presents a portion of the Gloria from the mass which displays youthful energy and the colorful orchestrations that would come to define Puccini's grand operatic scope.
Pop singer and composer Carly Simon was inspired by both the city of New York and the poetry of Walt Whitman when she composed her hit song Let the River Run in 1988. The heavy drum beats are not accidental - she said that she wanted the jungle-type beat to help juxtapose the many facets of the big city. The song, which she composed for the movie, "Working Girl" in 1988," went on to garner an unprecedented trifecta, winning an Oscar Award for best original song in 1989, a Golden Globe award for best original song, and a Grammy Award for best song written specifically for a motion picture. We sing the song this Sunday with an eye toward running rivers, warming earth, blooming flowers, and renewed spirits!
Special thanks to Emma Vawter and Thomas Guthrie for their splendid presentation of
With verdue clad, to Susan Clark for her lovely introduction to Al Shlosha D'varim,
and to Chris Mauro for his exceptional drumming.
Make plans now to be in the house to hear Terry Burrell on Saturday night, April 13, as she presents her one-woman show: "An Evening with Ethel Waters." Ms. Burrell is a veteran of the Broadway Stage and the cabaret who will delight the audience with songs and anecdotal stories of the great blues singer. Ms. Burrell will be accompanied at the piano by Daryl Waters who orchestrated the music for the hit show, "Memphis." Admission is free so get a sitter for the kids and make it a couple's night out. Hope to see you there. Click here to view the poster!

Beyond the Church
Greetings all Rebuilding Together (RT) past volunteers, current volunteers, or new/potential volunteers,
Your assistance is once again needed. It is with great pleasure that I ask you to join Greg Falcigno and I once again as part of our Cedar Lane team working with Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) on making repairs to the residence of an elderly neighbor. This activity is part of RTMCs annual rebuilding weekend. The average income of the people helped by RTMC is 25K per year. It is tough to keep up with home repairs with that income and your help means a lot in keeping people dry, safe and warm.
For those of you that have participated in the past, you know that project weekend always ends up being project weekends. This year the main weekend will be April 27 and 28, with prep days tentatively scheduled for April 21, 22, and project completion days May 4, 5. If you can help out on any of those days, we can sure u se you. As in past years, there is work requiring some construction skills but most of the work does not require skills. This year's home is located in Wheaton area near the intersection of Connecticut Ave and Viers Mill. The homeowner is in her 60s, extremely nice, and has two adult children. Most of the work this year is outside, so we will be somewhat at the mercy of the weather.
Last week Greg and I met with the homeowner to get a sense of the scope of the work and materials needed. Greg put together a list of tasks that we think we can do as part of our effort.
Front of home
Cover or paint front soffit Repair/replace window trim and repaint
Side of home Replace rotted fascia and paint Repair cement steps Repair porch railing Add stair rail from porch
Back of home
Repair railing to basement
Remove and Replace kitchen door, add weather-stripping
Repair/Replace wood on stoop and stairs from Kitchen door.
Cover or paint soffit
Scrape and paint fascia
Inside of home
Add smoke detectors
Snake basement commode, make sure it flushes.
Yard
Trim a couple of limbs
Remove debris from back of home for PM trash pickup
Repair chain link fencing - top rail is bent from tree limb falling on it. Need to bend it back and reattach.
We are going to need your help with all of the tasks identified above. If you can help this year, please let me know which days and for how long you would be available. If there is a particular task that you are experienced on or would like to participate in, please indicate that as well.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at mga1960@earthlink.net. Youth are invited to participate as well. The minimum age is 14.
