We Care
We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers. Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic
neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support. Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.
Our thoughts and healing prayers are with
Tracey Stein (N9), who is recovering from a fall and back injury in Baltimore. She is in physical therapy there, and glad to be with good friends. We also think of Barbara Ricketts, who is living in her home and providing cat care for Tracey. Be in touch with Tracey through her cell phone listed in the CL Directory.
We hold in our hearts all those in ongoing medical treatment, including Cherry Wunderlich (N3). May each know we are with them as they navigate the many steps of the journey.
We rejoice with Michael Benefiel (N13), proud father: Rev. Rebecca Benefiel Bijur, a minister at the UU Community Church of Santa Monica, has been received into final fellowship with the UU Ministers Association.
Visitors Welcome:
Wanda Van Goor (N2) is home, living with a health aide, and enjoying contact from Cedar Lane friends. Be in touch with her by phone to set up a visit.
Trudy Morse (N9) is in home hospice care. She enjoys company, coordinated by daughter Sarah, at morsekathan@gmail.com. Please go for short visits of about half an hour so as not to tire her. Our thoughts are with Mike, Mary, Adam, Lauren, and Erica Morse; and the extended family.
If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation. If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Louise Green, lgreen@cedarlane.org, Sabbatical Minister for Pastoral Care. You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
This Sunday's music emits energy, beauty, and grace. Bell Canto rings a syncopated rendition of today's opening hymn. The arrangement of Feel the Spirit, by Lloyd Larson, builds excitement through repeating simple rhythmic motifs and adding higher and lower bells to realize a full and joyous sound from the bell choir.
Wana Baraka is a Kenyan religious song that arranger Shawn Kirchner learned at an agricultural missions conference in Ghana in 1994. The song, exalting the joy of prayer, begins as if in a distance with the sound of men's voices. As the singers come closer the arrangement adds vocal parts and volume, culminating in a grand explosion of brilliant voices. Wana Baraka wale waombao; They have blessings, those who pray; Yesu mwenyewe alisima. Alleluya! Jesus himself said so. Alleluia!
Clif Hardin's beautiful setting of the song Gracias por el amor comes from UUA's new songbook, "Las Voces del Camino" (Voices on the Journey). Clif's four part arrangement for choir exploits the changing colors of the various voices as they weave the melody through the counterpoint in the beautiful Spanish language.
This Sunday's offertory music features a recording of the Washington Saxophone Quartet performing a lovely, lyrical movement from Peter Warlock's "Capriol Suite." Warlock was the pen name of Philip Heseltine, a creative British composer who composed all his music under the pseudonym. His "Capriol Suite," originally composed as a piano duet and then set for string orchestra, has been lauded as his most creative work. Utilizing renaissance dances as a model, Warlock cleverly enveloped them in such unique harmonies and rhythms as to make them virtually unidentifiable from the originals. The four voices of the saxophone quartet bring poignancy to the dance whose title means "foot in the air."

The Washington Saxophone Quartet is coming to Concerts at Cedar Lane!
Led by Rich Kleinfeldt, the familiar voice of WETA, the quartet will perform next Sunday, March 10, at 4 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. Click here to view the flyer!

From the Senior Minister Search Committee
We see light at the end of the tunnel!
Thank you again for the outstanding support of the charge you gave us at last April's Annual Meeting to identify the best candidate to serve as our next Senior Minister. When we last communicated with you in early December, we explained that we were "going dark" for a time to continue the confidential interviewing process. We are in the midst of completing our assignment now. It has been a dynamic and uplifting experience that has been predicated on your feedback during Cottage Meetings, your participation in the Congregational Survey and scores of conversations that many of you have had with us.
By the end of March, we anticipate being able to announce the name of the outstanding minister selected to come to Cedar Lane for Candidating Week, Sunday April 7th to Sunday April 14th. During this time, you will have many opportunities to come to know the candidate, who will preach on Sunday morning, April 7th, meet with various groups during the following week, then preach again on Sunday, April 14th. After the second worship service on the 14th, we will hold our Annual Meeting, and all eligible members will vote on whether or not to call this final candidate to come to Cedar Lane as our new Senior Minister. Please mark your calendars now!
We believe that the minister we recommend will be someone profoundly interested in Cedar Lane's mission "to explore the eternal, nurture community and build a more just world." This individual will be an outstanding spiritual leader and motivator for all ages, a highly effective speaker, a person who possesses a strong intellectual capacity with an engaging and sympathetic personal style, and have the flexibility and experience to journey with us in implementing a Governance by Policy structure as affirmed recently by the Board of Trustees.
Stay tuned. We're all in this together!
SMSC members: John Gubbings, Bob Harrison, David Hawver, Emily Mellgren, Ann Meyer, Carolyn Morrissey, Lyn Peters
