Manna Food - SJC's 50/50 Collection Plate:  This Sunday, collection plate receipts at both services will be shared 50/50 through this important Social Justice Council program with Manna Food, Montgomery County's nonprofit food bank.  Cedar Lane has been a partner with Manna Food since its inception in 1983-collecting food, contributing money and packing food boxes for its clients.  Dozens of other county nonprofits and social service agencies depend on Manna to provide essential food to their own clients.  Last year, Manna served 41,976 families with its monthly food distributions of a 3 to 5 day supply of nutritious food; another 114,937 individuals received other food distributions through Manna partners; over 2,000 students each week receive a Smart Sack of food items to be eaten over the weekend; and altogether, it is estimated that over 5% of Montgomery County's population receives regular food distributions from Manna.  Manna Food uses its funds wisely and has received 4-Star ratings-the highest-from Charity Navigator, the largest independent, charity evaluator in America, for both overall financial efficiency and accountability/transparency.  Manna Food relies on the generosity of our community to fight hunger.  Ninety-six percent of every dollar donated goes directly to our hungry neighbors.  You can help by giving generously when the collection plate reaches you on Sunday.

Upcoming Sundays

March 3, 2013, 9 and 11 a.m.
"Holding Vision"

Rev. Louise Green, Sabbatical Minister

Worship Associate: Brian Belanger

In congregational communities, we are always building with the future in mind.  How  do we anchor our vision, and hold fast to what we say we will become?  How do we hear many voices, and move forward with a sense of unity?  How might we support the vision of other UU congregations as well?

Forum:  Assisted Living and Other Arrangements for Seniors: an Insider's Perspective, with Kent Stansberry, Board
of Directors, Chesterbrook Residences in Falls Church.

We Care

We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers.  Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic
neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support.  Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office.  Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.

The 100th birthday of Ruth Lane is coming May 25, and so you may celebrate in advance or closer to the time.  Perhaps being 100 deserves a year of acknowledgement, and Ruth can get warm attention at any time.  Sorry for the confusion - it is unclear who started the early birthday rumor!

If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation.  If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Louise Green, lgreen@cedarlane.org, Sabbatical Minister for Pastoral Care.  You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.
From the Administrator
Sara Deshler

From the Music Director

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

This Sunday's music features collaborations by two chamber ensembles, Gruppo Piccolo, Cedar Lane's chamber vocal choir, and the Kokopelli Recorder Ensemble, directed by Carole Rogentine and featuring soprano, alto, tenor, and bass recorders.

Kokopelli's prelude, O Doctor Optime, was composed by Giovanni Bassano (1558-1617).  The text of this motet is "O best of healers, light of the Holy Church, Blessed Jerome, lover of the divine word, pray for us."  Bassano lived in Venice where he was a virtuoso corneto player at St Mark's Cathedral.  He was also a pupil of Palestrina who lived in Rome. His main importance was his instruction books and embellished motets; he ornamented no less than fifty-two of Palestrina's compositions, mainly motets.  O Doctor Optimae was performed with silver instruments in the Sistine Chapel.  Pope Leo XV commissioned jewelry makers to make silver instruments fo which sackbuts, trumpets and trombones were the most common.

Giovanni Pierluigi Da Palestrina (1526-1594) was one of the most influential composers of his era in the Catholic Church.  His mastery of church music was such that he held several posts as Maestro di cappella until his death.  His legacy includes masses, sacred motets, hymns, madrigals, and organ ricercari.   His vocal parts display fine balance and beautiful harmonizations as heard in Sunday's Introit, Adoramus Te.

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) held a most unique position, being on the leading edge of the transition from the florid polyphonic compositional style of the renaissance to the monodic or chordal movement style that came to define the baroque period.  He became the conductor at the Basilica of San Marco in Venice and created volumes of motets, madrigals and sacred masses.  Cantate Domino is one of Monteverdi's most robust and popular motets that combine vocal and instrumental ensembles.

John Dowland (1563-1626) was a popular English lutenist and composer who lived in London.  His works included scores of dances which have been transcribed for various combinations of instruments.  Kokopelli will offer two selections: The King of Denmark, his Galliard and Mistresse Nichols Almand.

Kokopelli's postlude, Galliard: The Fairie-round is one of the most famous instrumental works to be composed by English composer Anthony Holborne (1545-1602).  A prominent court musician during Queen Elizabeth I, Holborne wrote numerous dances and "ayres" for viols, recorders, and other instruments.

Special thanks to members of the Kokopelli Recorder Ensemble:  Steve Ono, Candace Ridington, Edith Tatel, Marge Weissberg, Gerry Wright, Reiko Yoshimura, Mollie Habermeier, and Director, Carole Rogentine, and to members of Gruppo Piccolo:  Ariel Mora, Jean Schaible, Kate Harrison, Kate Curtis, Lynn Weidenschilling, Susannah Vesey, Leslie Backus, Steve Shafer, Perry Seiffert, and Director, Richard Shrager. Their special talents, musicianship, and collaboration have significantly enhanced this Sunday's services.  We are grateful to Susannah Vesey for accompanying this Sunday's hymns.

From the Senior Minister Search Committee

We see light at the end of the tunnel!

Thank you again for the outstanding support of the charge you gave us at last April's Annual Meeting to identify the best candidate to serve as our next Senior Minister. When we last communicated with you in early December, we explained that we were "going dark" for a time to continue the confidential interviewing process. We are in the midst of completing our assignment now. It has been a dynamic and uplifting experience that has been predicated on your feedback during Cottage Meetings, your participation in the Congregational Survey and scores of conversations that many of you have had with us.

By the end of March, we anticipate being able to announce the name of the outstanding minister selected to come to Cedar Lane for Candidating Week, Sunday April 7th to Sunday April 14th. During this time, you will have many opportunities to come to know the candidate, who will preach on Sunday morning, April 7th, meet with various groups during the following week, then preach again on Sunday, April 14th. After the second worship service on the 14th, we will hold our Annual Meeting, and all eligible members will vote on whether or not to call this final candidate to come to Cedar Lane as our new Senior Minister. Please mark your calendars now!

We believe that the minister we recommend will be someone profoundly interested in Cedar Lane's mission "to explore the eternal, nurture community and build a more just world." This individual will be an outstanding spiritual leader and motivator for all ages, a highly effective speaker, a person who possesses a strong intellectual capacity with an engaging and sympathetic personal style, and have the flexibility and experience to journey with us in implementing a Governance by Policy structure as affirmed recently by the Board of Trustees.

Stay tuned.  We're all in this together!
