We Care

We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers.  Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic
neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support.  Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office.  Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.

Members of Neighborhood 25 joined together for a potluck dinner in the Chalice House on January 19.  Good food and fellowship were followed by some members attending Cedar Lane's Orchestral Benefit Concert.

Congratulations to Ruth Lane (Neighborhood 17), who is celebrating her 100th birthday this month. Send her a card at 4898 Chevy Chase Blvd, Chevy Chase, MD 20815.

More congratulations to Michael Benefiel (N13), who just completed training to be a paralegal at Montgomery College. We know the world will benefit from his passion and skills!

Wanda Van Goor (N2) is home, living with a health aide, and enjoying contact from Cedar Lane friends.

Trudy Morse (N9) recovered from the flu, and remains in home hospice. She enjoys company, coordinated by daughter Sarah, at morsekathan@gmail.com. Please be in touch and go for short visits.

We send love to Sally Roy, the mother of Amanda Garzon (N20), grandmother to Gabriella, Sofia and Itati, and close friend of several Cedar Lane congregants. Our prayers are with family and friends in her ongoing health challenges. May all those who accompany Sally be present in compassion and patience.

We join with John and Thea Miles (N9), as they celebrate the life of John's mother, Bea Miles, who passed away in VT at age 101. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this transition.

A celebration of life for Suzanne Hosford (N26) will be held at Cedar Lane on Saturday, February 16, at 4 p.m., officiated by Rev. Louise Green. You are invited to bring food for a light reception, coordinated by the Alliance. Thank you for this ministry to the family and friends of Sue.

If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation.  If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Louise Green, lgreen@cedarlane.org, Sabbatical Minister for Pastoral Care.  You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

Spring B:  What Is Spring B, You Ask? Spring B is Cedar Lane's four week program (over 40 years old this year!), which has classes for all ages and interests. It starts on April 28, and culminates with a church-wide picnic on May 19. For those four Sundays, come to a family-friendly service at 10:00 a.m. (no RE classes, but childcare available for our youngest), then at 11:00 a.m., play softball with your children, learn how to knit, or learn a foreign language! These are just a few of the many classes offered in the past. Do you have a talent or interest you'd like to share with others? There is a survey in the order of service both this Sunday, Feb. 10, to let the RE Council know your thoughts. Please take a moment to fill one out. You can leave it in the box at the back of the sanctuary on Sundays or turn it into the RE office at anytime. The council is already hard at work, and can use everyone's input to make this year's "B" successful!  Questions or suggestions?  Contact Kim Robinson at karobinsonclre@gmail.com.

Help Abolish Maryland's Death Penalty! Momentum is building and we are closer than ever to making death penalty repeal a reality in 2013. Gov. Martin O'Malley and Sen. Representatives of Amnesty International and our own Social Justice Committee will be on hand after services on Sun., Feb. 10 with pre-printed postcards to send to your state legislators, urging them to vote "yes" on repeal. Other information about this year's campaign will also be available.

From the Music Director

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

The music of Sunday's service reflects thoughts of prayer, of the senselessness of killing, and of all the good that can be found in humankind. Antonio Lotti, (1667-1740) was a highly regarded composer during the late renaissance period. Living in Venice and active in church music throughout his life, he was a paid counter-tenor (male alto) through his teen years and eventually, through a series of promotions, became primo maestro di cappella (director of music) in 1736 and held the post until his death. Lotti composed numerous masses for worship at St. Mark's Cathedral and his conservative choral compositional style is said to have influenced J.S. Bach. The Kyrie would have been sung during the early stages of the mass.

Even When God is Silent was composed by Michael Horvit in November of 1988 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kristalnacht, The Night of Broken Glass, in which German soldiers destroyed hundreds of Jewish synagogues and storefronts. The text of the song comes from a poem that was written on a basement wall in Cologne, Germany, and discovered by Allied troops. The poem had been written by someone in hiding. The composer writes:  "It is one of the most poignant poems I know: an extraordinary testament of faith under horrible circumstances."

W. Glen Darst (1896-1986) composed a number of choral anthems that referenced the power of light. In Let There Be Light for choir and organ, Darst set the text of William M. Vories, with permission from The American Peace Society. Vories' verses convey a desire to celebrate wisdom, humanity, and deeds as a promotion of peace over conflict.

Newcomer Brunch this Sunday after each service in the library

Congregational Conversations - Feb. 10:

The Board of Trustees and Governance Task Force will host a conversation after both services on February 10 in the sanctuary.  The topic of discussion will be the Governance Philosophy Statement recently affirmed by the Board and Frequently Asked Questions related to Governance By Policy.

You can read both documents on the Cedar Lane website homepage by clicking on Governance By Policy  http://www.cedarlane.org/GBP.htm.  Paper copies will be available on Sunday.

"Affirmation" means that the board judges the governance element to be sufficiently mature to warrant open dissemination to and feedback from members of the congregation.  We anticipate such conversations on a monthly basis.

Alliance Day is this Thursday, February 14 at 11:30 a.m.  Join us for a potluck lunch:   Please bring a main dish, vegetable, salad or dessert to serve six or eight.  Our speaker will be Don Bliss, author of Mark Twain's Tale of Today: Halley's Comet Returns - the Celebrated Author Critiques American Politics.  The book draws parallels between The Golden Age (the title of Twain's first novel) and politics today.   (Don is Chair-Elect of the Cedar Lane Board of Trustees.)  For additional information, contact Jean Thompson, Alliance President, at 301-589-3390 or jptjpt@verizon.net.

Beyond the Church

The Great Zucchini is coming to CLUUC TONIGHT, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m.
Snacks and pizza sold pre-show at 5:30 pm.

As some of you may have heard, the Great Zucchini will be coming for a school fundraiser to the Cedar Lane Nursery School this Friday February 8th at 6 p.m. It's only $5 a person (everyone pays), which is much cheaper than seeing him at his regular gigs at Jammin' Java and other local venues. We've seen him on three different occasions over the last 5 years, and he's never failed to have our kids howling in laughter for the entire show. He absolutely thrives with the 2 to 6 year old set, but slightly older children might still enjoy his act-- especially if they've seen him before.

Please join us on the 8th for an early evening of pure joy for the kids while helping raise money for CLNS.  Hope to see you there!
