"Penalties"

The Rev. Evan Keely

Worship Associate: Lucy Lowenthal

The Social Justice Council of the church has resolved to support efforts in Annapolis to repeal capital punishment in Maryland.  We will reflect together on this challenge.

Forum:  What Are the Prospects for Stronger Gun Control Legislation in the US Congress? with Ladd Everitt, Director of Communications for the Coalition to
Stop Gun Violence.

We Care

We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers.  Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support.  Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office.  Contact the church to determine chairs in your region.

We rejoice with Frances Dearman (N8) that daughter Kathleen continues to improve at Suburban Hospital.

Wanda Van Goor (N2) is doing very well at Wheaton Manor Care, and expects to come home in the near future.  Our thoughts are also with her children who are organizing home health assistance.

Trudy Morse (N9) is doing well in hospice care at home and remains in our caring thoughts.  Her daughter has requested cards for Trudy, and visitors welcome, only if coordinated through Sarah Morse, morsekathan@gmail.comTrudy lives in Garrett Park; address in the Cedar Lane directory.

Clint Confehr, the son of member Edith Confehr (was N32), reports she is doing well in Tennessee.  She receives welcomes calls and Cedar Lane news between 9 and 5 EST, contact in the CL Directory. Cards also much appreciated.

There were several deaths this week in the Cedar Lane congregation and extended community:

We mourn the passing of Suzanne Hosford

(N26), who died on 1/27 in Suburban Hospital.  Our hearts are with her three daughters as they prepare for the memorial service on February 16, at 4 pm at Cedar Lane.

Phyllis Leonard passed away on 1/28, and our condolences are with her son Jeff (N8) and entire family.  Phyllis and George Leonard were among the founding members of the UU congregation in Rockville.  Rev. Lynn Strauss will conduct a memorial service there on Saturday, February 9 at 2 p.m.  Phyllis also served as UUCR Minister of Religious Education in the 1960s, and had many friends in the Cedar Lane community.

Our healing thoughts are with Jeanne and family, on the death of Charles Kent (N17) on 1/29.  Charles had been in hospice since last summer, and died peacefully at home.  A private family service will take place on Feb. 1, with a public memorial expected in the spring.

Our thoughts and prayers with Susan Staff (N19), in the death of dear friend Dan Massey, on 1/28.  Susan writes: Since their retirement, both Alison and Dan Massey have been transgender advocates from grass roots service to international outreach. They have shown up in every endeavor to make Cedar Lane a more welcoming congregation.  We celebrate their faithful service in transgender social justice, and mourn Dan's loss.

If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation.  If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Louise Green, lgreen@cedarlane.org, Sabbatical Minister for Pastoral Care.  You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation.

Recommended Green Event:

Save the Date!
On Sunday, February 17, thousands of Americans will head to Washington, D.C., to make Forward on Climate the largest climate rally in history. Please RSVP at this link.

Join this historic event to make your voice heard and help the president start his second term with strong climate action. President Obama's legacy will rest squarely on his leadership in solving the climate crisis -- starting with rejecting the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and firing up our clean-energy economy. Help shape history by joining the Forward on Climate rally.

And if you can't make it to the rally, you can still help by chipping in whatever you can afford to help pay for buses, stage costs, spreading the word, and more.

Around the Church

THANKS Generous Cedar Laners:
Thanks to all who contributed to the 50-50 offering on January 27.  You provided $755.50 to the Interfaith Power and Light, a low budget local organization, to promote clean energy use and sound environmental practices to members of the area's religious communities.

The Adult Programs Committee is hosting this Sunday's Community Lunch!  Members and visitors are welcome to attend our Community Lunch on Sunday, February 3 in the Chalice House around 12:15 p.m. following the second service. Plan to come for fellowship, enjoy delicious food, and learn more about the great work of this important CLUUC group!  Adult Programs Committee is also in the lounge after service to take your registration for Spring events, and to answer questions.

This Sunday is Manna First Sunday Food Drive:  Please bring canned and dry boxed foods for the blue box.  We also need kid friendly foods for Manna's Smart Sacks program; these foods are sent home with kids on the weekends.  Lists of food items Manna needs can be found on Cedar Lane's website.  Food may be left by the chapel doors or in the lobby downstairs.

Congregational Conversations - Feb. 10: The Board of Trustees and Governance Task Force will host a conversation after both services on February 10 in the sanctuary.  The topic of discussion will be the Governance Philosophy Statement recently affirmed by the Board and Frequently Asked Questions related to Governance By Policy.  "Affirmation" means that the board judges the governance element to be sufficiently mature to warrant open dissemination to and feedback from members of the congregation.  We anticipate such conversations on a monthly basis.

Spring B:  What Is Spring B, You Ask? Spring B is Cedar Lane's four week program (over 40 years old this year!), which has classes for all ages and interests. It starts on April 28, and culminates with a church-wide picnic on May 19. For those four Sundays, come to a family-friendly service at 10:00 a.m. (no RE classes, but childcare available for our youngest), then at 11:00 a.m., play softball with your children, learn how to knit, or learn a foreign language! These are just a few of the many classes offered in the past. Do you have a talent or interest you'd like to share with others? There is a survey in the order of service both this Sunday, February 3, and next, to let the RE Council know your thoughts. Please take a moment to fill one out. You can leave it in the box at the back of the sanctuary on Sundays or turn it into the RE office at anytime. The Council is already hard at work, and can use everyone's input to make this year's "B" successful!  Questions or suggestions?  Contact Kim Robinson at karobinsonclre@gmail.com.

Help Abolish Maryland's Death Penalty! Momentum is building and we are closer than ever to making death penalty repeal a reality in 2013. Gov. Martin O'Malley and Sen. Mike Miller have promised to ensure that this year's bill gets to the floor of the General Assembly for a full vote, where we have the votes to pass the measure. Representatives of Amnesty International and our own Social Justice Committee will be on hand after services on Sun., Feb. 10 with pre-printed postcards to send to your state legislators, urging them to vote "yes" on repeal. Other information about this year's campaign will also be available.

From the Music Director

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

This morning we sing songs of community and unity. Alleluia Chaconne is taken from our hymnal and is based upon Johann Pachelbel's famous "Canon." The song is set as a three part round and we have augmented it with the addition of handbells. We Are One was composed by Vancouver, BC composer, Brian Tate. The popular composer and workshop leader created this powerful gospel style song to inspire unity among people. Tom Shelton's uplifting song, We All Smile in the Same Language, includes phrases in English and Spanish and reminds us that to join voices is to be united, to believe is to make dreams come true, and by joining hand in hand we can embrace each other's diversities.

Special thanks to Emma Vawter for her stylized solo in We All Smile in the Same Language, which lit up the sanctuary and put a smile on all our faces.
