This Sunday will be a 50/50 split plate with Interfaith Power & Light, which works with nearly 300 congregations of all faiths -- including Cedar Lane and many local UU communities -- across Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia to save energy, go green, and respond to climate change. IPL helps congregations educate by incorporating environmental concerns into worship, teaching, and preaching. IPL helps congregations go green, by supporting them in saving energy, re-bidding their electricity contracts, purchasing clean power, and shifting other aspects of their institutional purchasing and practices to minimize environmental impact. IPL helps congregations speak out as part of local and national advocacy efforts to protect the environment. IPL is part of a network of forty local Interfaith Power & Light groups across the country. We Care
We Care is a network for short-term pastoral needs, led by lay volunteers. Examples are food delivery, a ride to a doctor, or listening during a difficult time. Cedar Lane is organized by geographic neighborhoods, with chairpersons who coordinate support. Neighborhood numbers are listed on name tags, and shown on a map in the church office. Contact the church to determine chairs in your region. Penny Douglas and family (Neighborhood 8), as they grieve the loss of Penny's husband Bruce on December 31. A memorial service will be held at Cedar Lane on January 26.
New congregant Amy Vernier, and baby
Elizabeth, continue to be treated at home now, and recover slowly from infection after emergency C-section in November. We hope they can be back at Cedar Lane soon. Ongoing healing prayers for all those in the Living with Cancer friendship group. This community continues to meet twice monthly, for support, shared wisdom, laughter, and meditation. You are welcome to attend regularly, or once in a while. (Meets in the library on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays, 2-3:30 p.m.) If you learn of a congregant in need, please do offer assistance, asking how you might support the situation. If the person would like church response, or you have a concern to share, please contact Louise Green, lgreen@cedarlane.org, Sabbatical Minister for Pastoral Care. You may also contact Evan Keely or Karen Lee Scrivo, as all members of the ministerial team offer pastoral support to the congregation. |

JOIN US THIS SUNDAY!
"At the River I Stand"
Sunday, January 27, 12:15 p.m.
in the Chalice House
All are invited to join CLARITY* members to share food, conversation, and ideas. We'll begin with a light lunch while we show the (1 hour) documentary "At the River I Stand." Afterwards, Elise Bryant will facilitate a discussion about the film. Elise's areas of expertise include communication skills, leadership training, labor history and culture, diversity training, and organization development. Cedar Laners may also know Elise as the director of the DC Labor Chorus.
"At the River I Stand" takes place in Memphis in the spring of 1968, the dramatic climax of the Civil Rights movement. The film skillfully reconstructs the two eventful months that transformed a strike by Memphis sanitation worker into a national conflagration, and disentangles the complex historical forces that came together with the inevitability of tragedy at the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This documentary brings into sharp relief issues that have only become more urgent in the intervening years: the connection between economic and civil rights, debates over strategies for change, the demand for full inclusion of African Americans in American life and the fight for dignity for public employees and all working people.

Environmental Task Force
Recommended Green Event:
In his inaugural address yesterday, President Obama made it clear that responding to climate change is a moral obligation, challenged those who still discredit the overwhelming scientific consensus around man-made global warming, and highlighted the economic benefits of embracing a new clean energy economy.
President Obama has articulated our climate change challenges and opportunities, now we need to show him that he has strong public support to take action on climate change.
Already, 10,000 people have signed up to participate in the Presidents Day action in Washington, D.C., on February 17.
We need 10,000 more to show the strength of our movement and the conviction of our message: Mr. President, lead on climate change.
Let us know whether you are considering attending and whether you need help finding transportation and lodging for the weekend.

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
We are pleased to welcome our young instrumental musicians to lead the music in this Sunday's services. Jacqueline Zito performs the music of Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky who was a strong proponent of the musical education of children. He wrote over one hundred study pieces for young pianists in the form of songs, marches and dances. Fairy Tale is such a work, being included in Kabalevsky's largest volume, "Thirty Pieces for Children," composed in 1938-39. Fiddle tunes are as important to Irish heritage as are stews and brews. The devastation of the Irish potato famine drove many fiddlers to America where they were able to find work in vaudevillian shows in the larger cities. Jessica Zito performs the Chicago Jig, probably penned in the windy city, and becoming quite popular with Irish musicians. Jessica also performs Pipe on the Hob, one of a host of "standard" fiddle and pipe tunes that appeared in Francis O'Neill's "Music of Ireland" collection from the turn of the twentieth century. Romanza is one of the most familiar and popular works for the Spanish classical guitarist. Owen Brinker's study of the classical guitar requires him to pick the individual strings with his fingers, rather than with the traditional pick. Bist du bei mir is one of the most famous melodies to appear in the "Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach" which the composer made for his wife in 1725. The melody, which has been attributed to Heinrich Stölzel, has been transcribed for numerous solo instruments and suits the trumpet quite nicely.
It's not too late to donate to AMCAV! A huge thank you to everyone who attended last weekend's fabulous benefit concert and generously contributed to the Association of Christian Mothers for Assistance to the Vulnerable (AMCAV, serving all regardless of creed). We raised $2300 that evening for the education of stigmatized children born of violated mothers in DR Congo.
You may still donate! Checks can be made payable to CLUUC: memo line "AMCAV." Submit to the CLUUC office or visit Annette Scarpitta at her "Congo Kids" table in the Lounge. These funds will be wired early next week to fulfill tuition payments at our 3 village schools. Remember this is the social justice project of our 7th grade, 2d session class, and the Congolese kids have no other support except for random donors on GlobalGiving.org. New partnership or fund-raising opportunities are welcomed. Again, huge thanks for your support!

Generous donations totaling $240,000 came from all over the country - a moving testimony to the outpouring of support from Unitarian Universalists for those in need, and a demonstration of how seriously we take Stewardship.
The fund is now being disbursed to congregations and individuals recommended by congregations who are in need following the storm. Here is the website about how to donate, where the money is going, how individuals can volunteer and how to apply for a grant from the Relief Fund. Click here to learn more. A Sandy Relief Facebook page has been created to share photos and comments about the work UU congregations and individuals are doing in the relief efforts. Click here to view.
