Weekly Devotional · December 21, 2012
Last week's eNews was put together before we knew about the horrid events in Newtown, Connecticut. Since then, we have all had a week to contemplate the unbearable realities that cataclysm represents.
After our worship services this past Sunday, a number of congregants made comments to me along the lines of, "Today is a tough day to be a preacher." I sensed appreciation in many of those remarks - not for me as much as for preachers in general, for places of worship, places to come to and be together with others in the face of the incomprehensible. It's important to remember in such times that we are not alone.
Already some are moving beyond solely grieving toward action. I hope we can continue our own conversations as a faith community about how we can respond and the ways in which we can get involved in efforts that we find meaningful and helpful. This is another way in which we are reminded that we are not alone.
Prayer
O vast and eternal Mystery, called by many names yet never fully known by our mortal minds, help us to reach out, to connect, to build with others a world of possibilities, for our own sake, for the sake of those we love, and for all creation. Amen.

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Healing wishes are with two members of the Cedar Lane community: While Wanda Van Goor (Neighborhood 2) was hanging Christmas lights, the ladder collapsed, causing a fall that broke some bones around her hip. She had surgery this week at Washington Hospital Center and eventually will be discharged to a rehabilitation center. Lois Delaha (Neighborhood 10) is recovering at home after surgery at Holy Cross Hospital. She is thankful for all the love and support she has already received from the congregation. THIS SUNDAY! Grieving a Loved One Through the Holidays: At their best, the winter holidays are joyous times with family and other companions. However, the death of a loved one can make the holiday season a difficult time of grief and renewed sadness. As is our annual tradition, on Dec. 23 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel, there will be a gathering of those who wish to share their thoughts and feelings about the people they miss this holiday season. Contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org or x204 with any questions. Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

Around the Church
Play Area in Lounge during Coffee Hour!
So that our families with young children can more easily enjoy the coffee hour after the service we've added a play area in the Lounge with a few toys. The target age group is pre-school but older children are welcome too as long as they play gently. All children will need to be supervised by their parents. Any questions or concerns? Contact Membership Coordinator Allison Cox (membership@cedarlane.org).
Community Based Shelter: Cedar Lane's annual week begins on Sunday, December 30. During this week our volunteers will prepare and serve the evening meal for 35 women in the Rockville shelter. The SJC budget pays for supplies and food for breakfast and lunch. We have six slots for food preparation each day. We also need people to prepare 25 sandwiches each day. If your family would like to volunteer, please contact Sandy Shaw; 301-642-0083 or alexandersha@gmail.com, or look for the CBS poster at the SJC table in the lounge after service on Sunday. Please sign up!
A Win-Win Holiday Gift Idea:
Got a young sports fan on your shopping list? You can get the perfect gift and help Cedar Lane at the same time. Church member Fred Bowen, who writes sports fiction (ages 7-12), and the weekly Washington Post/KidsPost sports column has donated 100 of his books to Cedar Lane to sell during the holidays and he will be signing them in the book corner this Sunday. The books are $5 each and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Cedar Lane general fund.

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
This Sunday our music hails the approaching celebration of Christmas. Anne Chernikoff and her oboe join Bell Canto for Star of Wonder, a delightful medley of "We Three Kings" and Anitra's Song from the Peer Gynt Suite by the Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg. Emma Vawter, Tracy Esho, Kevin Miller and Henry Sgrecci join to sing There is No Rose by South African born composer, John Joubert. The choral miniature depicting Jesus' birth has earned its place as a 20th century choral classic while Joubert, now in his 85th year, continues to work on composition projects for 2013. The English song, My Dancing Day, first appeared in a collection called "Chirstmas Carols Ancient and Modern" from the 1830's. Of the many arrangements, ours by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker is one of the most beautiful, telling the story of Jesus' birth, as if it were a dance. The beautiful Carol for a Child was composed several years ago by Elizabeth Benefiel and more recently harmonized by Michael Holmes, Director of Music at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring.
Special thanks to members of Bell Canto; Mary Farrar, Audrey Anderson, Kathie Bryant, Susan Easterly, Allison Durland, SusannahVesey, Patricia Phillips, Sophie Haber-Sage, Carole Richardson, Lisa Chernikoff, Chris Dupre, Leslie Backus, and Eric Rosenthal, and oboist Anne Chernikoff, for their wonderful collaboration. We extend our thanks to the choir section leaders; Emma Vawter, Tracy Esho, and Kevin Miller for their wonderful collaborations with Director of Music, Henry Sgrecci, and accompanist, Thomas Guthrie. Have you marked your calendar for the Benefit Concert on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013? It will be a special night of wonderful music and good friends to benefit AMCAV! Stop by the International Concerns Coalition table in the lounge to learn more.

From the Senior Minister Search Committee: "We've Gone Dark!"
How is your Holiday Season shaping up? In the most positive sense, we members of the Senior Minister Search Committee are having an exciting time!
We've had an outstanding response from ministerial applicants in response to the announcement of our senior minister vacancy. Despite the brightness of the Holiday Season, you won't be hearing much from us over the next several weeks. We're on a tight timetable, so we'll be "going dark" for a while as we do the work entrusted to us. We're now in the process of assessing ministerial packets from all candidates and narrowing the field by checking references, conducting phone interviews, and setting up off-site visits with top candidates in January and February. Our goal: by mid-March to identify the candidate to be presented to you during Candidating Week at Cedar Lane, April 7 - 14, 2013.
Thank you again. We are humbled and inspired by your support and encouragement. We couldn't do it without you!
SMSC members: John Gubbings, Bob Harrison, David Hawver, Emily Mellgren, Ann Meyer, Carolyn Morrissey, & Lyn Peters

Environmental Task Force
Recommended Green Tip this week:
Taken from the Human Rights Campaign website:
More than ever, consumers are sending a message to businesses that they are watching. They are watching to see if the businesses they patronize understand and honor issues important to them, giving buying power to issues ranging from LGBT inclusiveness to environmental protection. Corporate social responsibility has become an imperative for a successful business. With Buying for Workplace Equality, we hope to harness that power by providing you with the most accurate review of a business's workplace policies toward LGBT employees.

Beyond the Church
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia, Maryland (UUCC), seeks a Sunday Coordinator to provide a welcoming office presence and serve the needs of the congregation on Sunday mornings from 8:00am until 1:00pm. The Coordinator will organize, train, and support Sunday morning volunteers-including greeters, ushers, coffee makers, etc. -and generally ensure that systems are in place for Sunday mornings to run smoothly at UUCC. The successful candidate is warm, organized, flexible, communicates well, and solves problems creatively. The position requires about seven hours per week, with five hours on Sunday morning and two additional hours at the Coordinator's discretion. (Note that these responsibilities will essentially prevent the employee from regularly attending Sunday morning worship services.)
Please send letter of interest to Maureen Harris, Executive Director, at executivedirector@uucolumbia.net. For
questions, call Maureen at (410) 381-0097.
From Rev. Mark Kiyimba, who led worship service at Cedar Lane this past year: Ugandan Parliamentary Speaker Rebecca Kadaga vows to pass the draconian anti-gay bill before Christmas as a "Christmas Present" to Ugandans.
