"The Van Gogh Café"

The Rev. Keith Kron, Director, UUA Transitions Office

Worship Associate: Jim Laurenson

Living our Unitarian Universalist values isn't always as easy as we would like it to be.  Often what we strive for is not what actually happens.  How can we improve the odds that we will lead with our best values inside and outside our congregation?  This sermon will explore these issues as they pertain to our next Senior Minister.

Forum:  Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman, Sikh Council on Religion and Education, will explain Sikhism, founded only 500 years ago, with its all-encompassing emphasis on God.  He will talk about the 500,000 Sikhs in the United States, mostly from Punjab, India, and the 5,000 known as American Sikhs, unfamiliar with Punjabi.  (See their website: www.Sikhcouncilusa.org)

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Our hearts go out to Catherine Malinin Dunn and John, Natalia and Raia Dunn (Neighborhood 11) with the death of John's father, John Harvey McHenry Dunn, who died peacefully on November 19 after a struggle with cancer.

Congratulations are with Sylvia Fisher (N13) with the publication of her book "Improving Emotional and Behavioral Outcomes for LGBT Youth." A celebration and discussion about Sylvia's work will be held at Cedar Lane on Friday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m.

Healing wishes are with former Cedar Lane member, Bob McClusky, who recently underwent a heart procedure. Bob and his wife Nancy can be reached at ndmcclusky@frontier.com and rsmcclusky@frontier.com.

We celebrate that, after a brief time in the hospital to treat an ulcer, Susan Staff (N19) has been discharged home.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

UU Young Adults at Cedar Lane

(20s/30s):  Interested in socializing with a newly formed Young Adults Group at Cedar Lane? We'll congregate after the second service on December 9 in the vestibule (in front of the library door) and then head off for brunch in the area. Sponsored by the Membership Services Committee. Questions? Contact Marlene Berg of the MSC at mgkpberg@gmail.com.

Gifts for Beacon House:  Share the spirit of giving with children and teens (ages 5-18) at Beacon House by bringing new, unwrapped gifts to church later than noon on Sunday, Dec. 16. Toys, books, puzzles, coloring books, crayons, sweaters, hats, gloves, sweatshirts and sweat-pants are needed. There are collection boxes upstairs by the front door and downstairs in the RE Administration area until the morning of Dec. 16, which will be the LAST day to bring them. If you can help with delivering gifts, contact Interim Director of Religious Education Karen Lee Scrivo at kscrivo@cedarlane.org.

What Is a Child Dedication?

Most faith traditions have a way to welcome young ones into our spiritual community. Our Child Dedication service is an opportunity for all of us - parents, family, friends, church - to promise to the child and to each other that we will love and nurture her or him, that we will teach the best of what we know, dedicating ourselves to this responsibility of raising a child and joyously celebrating the possibilities of a new life.

On Sunday, Dec. 23, we will have a dedication ceremony within the regular worship service, which will be at 10 a.m. and include all ages because of holidays.  If you and your family would like to participate, please contact Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo at

kscrivo@cedarlane.org or (301-493-8300) by Dec. 16.

A Win-Win Holiday Gift Idea

Got

a young sports fan on your shopping list?  We've got an interesting gift idea that will thrill your young fan and help Cedar Lane too!

Church member Fred Bowen writes sports stories for kids ages 7-12. (He also writes the weekly Washington Post/KidsPost sports column.) And he has donated 100 of his books to Cedar Lane to sell during the holidays. And here's what will make the gift extra special: between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Fred will try to be around between our two Sunday services to autograph the books (while your kids aren't looking!).

The books are $5 each and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Cedar Lane general fund. You will find his books for sale in the book corner in the lounge on Sundays from Nov. 25-Dec. 23.

The Sunday Morning Forum

From the Music Director

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

With this Sunday's music we embrace the beauty of all beings and affirm our intent as a welcoming community for all.  In a 2009 interview, the late composer, Billy Taylor, was asked by Charlie Rose what composition he felt best about.  Taylor replied that it was the song I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to be Free.  He identified it as his most "effective" song having been set in hymnals, embraced by the civil rights movement (he composed the song with lyricist Dick Dallas in 1963), and even adopted by organizations for the handicapped.  He characterized it as a song that said, I wish I knew how it would feel like to do what I do best without restrictions and barriers.

Christine Aguilera recorded the song Beautiful on her 2003 album, "Stripped." The song portrays the troubles of a young woman who is fighting low self-esteem and insecurity.  Aguilera dealt with years of opposition and backstabbing as she sought a career in entertainment and acknowledges that most individuals have encountered a lack of acceptance by others at some point in their lives.  With its strong message of empowerment the song has taken root within the LGBT community and has garnered awards for its positive portrayal of gay and transgender people.

Rev. Fred Small is the Senior Minister at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Cambridge, Mass.  He is also a skilled song writer and folk singer whose compositions have been sung by many well-known artists.  His concern for the environment and the oppressed has generated imaginative songs about homosexuality in the military, radioactive frogs, and even a moose's curious interest in a cow.  Composed in the early 1990s, Everything Possible was included in the finale of the 1992 Aids benefit musical "Heart Strings" and has gone on to enjoy great popularity.  It is #1019 in our songbook "Singing the Journey."

Special thanks to Tracy Esho and her beautiful, inspiring songs with accompanist, Thomas Guthrie, which have lent so much to today's service.  We welcome Tracy as alto soloist with the choir and look forward to hearing her much more in the future!

From the Senior Minister Search Committee

Invitation from the Senior Minister Search Committee

"Will the new minister hear me?  Will my concerns and needs be met? Will the minister understand what I'm living with?

How will the community respond to our minister?"

In thinking about these questions, a picture of the ideal minister (categorized by age, gender, gender identity, nationality, physical ability, race and sexual orientation) comes to mind.

This week we would like to ask you to reflect on what your picture of "the ideal senior minister" for Cedar Lane looks like. Think about your picture and why it is important to you.  Keep it in mind on Sunday, December 2, when UUA Director of Transitions, The Rev. Keith Kron, will give the sermons and then conduct a workshop from 1 - 4 p.m. on the theme of Beyond Categorical Thinking.  This program is designed to encourage inclusive thinking and prevent discrimination in the search process for a new minister.

A light lunch will be provided after the second service followed by the workshop in the sanctuary.  Please RSVP for the lunch by Tuesday, November 27 via email to lynpeters@verizon.net (so we know how much food to order).

In the workshop, you will:

  • Consider the hopes, expectations and concerns you have for a new minister;
  • Learn more about the ministerial search process;
  • Explore how thinking categorically about people sometimes interferes with choosing the best candidate

The workshop is another opportunity for everyone in our congregation to be a part of the search process.  Thank you for your interest. We look forward to seeing you there!
