"Sitting at the Welcome Table"
Karen Lee Scrivo, Interim Director of Religious Education
Worship Associate: Jim Laurenson
On this Sunday before Thanksgiving, we will explore the spiritual practice of radical hospitality and how we can widen the circle of those we welcome at our table. This service also kicks off the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee's annual Guest-At-Your Table campaign, which fosters awareness of the UUSC's human rights work and our shared belief in social justice. Children and youth will join us for the first part of the service before heading to their Religious Education classes.

This Sunday's Morning Forum: Post-Election 2012: How did It happen, Why did it happen, and What it means for the next 4 years. Our speaker is Peter Fenn, Democratic strategist and member of Cedar Lane.
Hurricane Sandy Relief: As you know, Hurricane Sandy has caused widespread devastation in the Mid-Atlantic region. Some are still without electricity, and needs are overwhelming. The Central East Regional Group of Unitarian Universalist congregations have set up a fund to collect donations. There are immediate personal needs and storm damage cleanup needs, as well as rebuilding later. The funds will be used for UU congregations and their members or for general relief, or both.
Cedar Lane will be sending 100% of the offering this Sunday, Nov. 18, to this effort. Please be generous with your cash donations or checks made payable to CLUUC, with Hurricane Sandy written on the memo line.
The world is only made livable by our caring for one another.
Thanks, The Social Justice Council

This will always be a work in progress. How are we progressing on that last initial, the "T"? How are we as a faith community fulfilling our aspirations to affirm the worth and dignity of transgender persons?

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Our hearts go out to Debra, Alex and Katie Klein (Neighborhood 23) with the death of Debra's mother, Jean Leonard, on Nov. 11 after an acute illness. A memorial is scheduled for this evening, Nov. 16, at 4:00 p.m. in the Cedar Lane chapel. All are welcome. We celebrate with Carole Rogentine (N5) who is recovering well from her second surgery and has been discharged from the hospital so she may recover at home. Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

What Is a Child Dedication?
Most faith traditions have a way to welcome young ones into our spiritual community. Our Child Dedication service is an opportunity for all of us - parents, family, friends, church - to promise to the child and to each other that we will love and nurture her or him, that we will teach the best of what we know, dedicating ourselves to this responsibility of raising a child and joyously celebrating the possibilities of a new life.
On Sunday, Dec. 23, we will have a dedication ceremony within the regular worship service, which will be at 10 a.m. and include all ages because of holidays. If you and your family would like to participate, please contact Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo at
kscrivo@cedarlane.org or (301-493-8300) by Dec. 16.
So You Think You Can Dance? Sing? Read Poetry?
We think so too, and we're putting on a show. Join us Saturday evening, May 18, 2013 at 8 p.m. in Cedar Lane's main auditorium. The Music Committee is sponsoring a talent show featuring a wide variety of talent people singing, playing an instrument, reading poetry, dancing, hamming it up in a skit, juggling, telling jokes - you name it, we hope to have it. All kinds of people have talent - young people, old people, beginners, polished professionals - and everyone is welcome, even people who are not members of Cedar Lane.
Let us know if you'd like to be in the show - acts should be 2-3 minutes long - by contacting Mary E. Farrar (maryefarrar@verizon.net) or Leslie Backus (backusle@verizon.net). If you have talents that are better used backstage (production, technical support, baking cookies), we'd like to include you too, so send us an email! Admission will be free - we want to build community and show appreciation for talented individuals and groups. Join us for this fun event!
A Win-Win Holiday Gift Idea
Got
a young sports fan on your shopping list? We've got an interesting gift idea that will thrill your young fan and help Cedar Lane too!
Church member Fred Bowen writes sports stories for kids ages 7-12. (He also writes the weekly Washington Post/KidsPost sports column.) And he has donated 100 of his books to Cedar Lane to sell during the holidays. And here's what will make the gift extra special: between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Fred will try to be around between our two Sunday services to autograph the books (while your kids aren't looking!).
The books are $5 each and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Cedar Lane general fund. You will find his books for sale in the book corner in the lounge on Sundays from Nov. 25-Dec. 23.

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
Our Thanksgiving Service extends thoughts of welcome to all. The Youth Handbell Choir opens the service with Burning Bright, an arrangement of the Chalice Song that our children sing in their Chapel Services. The Children's Choir is joined by Eric Rosenthal and his cello in the Traditional Spiritual, This Little Light of Mine. The cello's weaving lines provide a lovely counterpoint to this simple melody from children's voices. In There is a Time, the Youth Choir sings about making good choices: "The time has come, the moment's with us, we stand at future's open door. Let's boldly walk together through it and pledge to leave the world much better than before... "
The Adult Choir reprises Thanksgiving Song by Mary Chapin-Carpenter. The gentle mood and simple melody frame a reminder for us all to share our good fortunes: "Grateful for each hand we hold, gathered 'round this table from far and near we traveled home...Say, Welcome, welcome, share this feast. Come in, away from sorrow...."
Special thanks to all our young musicians; of the Children's Choir - Asha Butterworth, Miles Carr, Natalia Malinin Dunn, Silvia Eisenberg, Adam Falcigno, Linnea Hultman, and Tessa McCollum; the Youth Choir - Claire Bergey, Sam Brinker, Walter Ellis, Sarah Falcigno, Christine Green, Franny McCollum, and Chris Walkup; and the Youth Handbell Choir - Claire Bergey Adam Falcigno, Sarah Falcigno, Madeleine Franke, Christine Green, Dominic Manzella, and Eric Rosenthal (plus "super" youths Leslie Backus, Susan Clark, Alison Durland, Mary Farrar, and Carole Richardson). We are grateful for their special talents and their commitment to share music with us this Sunday!

From the Senior Minister Search Committee

Invitation from the Senior Minister Search Committee
"Will the new minister hear me? Will my concerns and needs be met? Will the minister understand what I'm living with? How will the community respond to our minister?"
In thinking about these questions, a picture of the ideal minister (categorized by age, gender, gender identity, nationality, physical ability, race and sexual orientation) comes to mind.
This week we would like to ask you to reflect on what your picture of "the ideal senior minister" for Cedar Lane looks like. Think about your picture and why it is important to you. Keep it in mind on Sunday, December 2, when UUA Director of Transitions, The Rev. Keith Kron, will give the sermons and then conduct a workshop from 1 - 4 p.m. on the theme of Beyond Categorical Thinking. This program is designed to encourage inclusive thinking and prevent discrimination in the search process for a new minister.
A light lunch will be provided after the second service followed by the workshop in the sanctuary. Please RSVP for the lunch by Tuesday, November 27 via email to lynpeters@verizon.net (so we know how much food to order).
In the workshop, you will:
- Consider the hopes, expectations and concerns you have for a new minister;
- Learn more about the ministerial search process;
- Explore how thinking categorically about people sometimes interferes with choosing the best candidate
The workshop is another opportunity for everyone in our congregation to be a part of the search process. Thank you for your interest. We look forward to seeing you there!
SMSC members: John Gubbings, Bob Harrison, David Hawver, Emily Mellgren, Ann Meyer, Carolyn Morrissey, Lyn Peters

Volunteer for Cedar Lane's
6th annual rebuilding trip to New Orleans!
January 19-26, 2013 are the dates now set for our work week to help rebuild
NOLA's much needed housing. 1000s of New Orleans home owners still are out
of their homes 8 years after Hurricane Katrina. Personal livelihoods and NOLA's
economic recovery depend on having viable housing to live in. For info, look
for trip veterans in the lounge on Sundays, or email team leader extraordinaire
Mike Burski: mga1960@earthlink.net. Make this your year to be in NOLA.
