NOTE: THIS SERVICE WILL BE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR THE DAY SO THERE ARE NO RE CLASSES.
Cedar Lane will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals service, a time to honor our connection to our animal friends and to consider how we can best be their voice in a world run by human beings. The 9:00 am service will welcome virtual animals (stuffed animals, photos and drawings) to honor the needs of the allergic while the 11:00 am service will welcome (vaccinated, contained/leashed, well-behaving) live animals. Stewards of live animals should gather in the courtyard by 10:45 to line up. Anyone who wishes to include a photo of an animal who has died or is best left at home should email the photo to Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org by Friday, Oct. 19.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Congratulations and best wishes to Randy and Josie Grant [Neighborhood 21] on the birth of their first grandchild. Their daughter Katie, who grew up at Cedar Lane, gave birth to a daughter. Note: The We Care chairs will be contacting each household in their neighborhood between now and December 1st, just to remind our members and friends about the We Care program and to see how folks are doing. Please anticipate these calls and welcome them! Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |
|
From the Associate Minister
Heather Janules' Whereabouts: Heather will be away from Cedar Lane from 10/2-10/16 to participate in the International Convocation of UU Women in Marosvasarhely, Romania and an out-of-town wedding.Interim Senior Minister, the Rev.Evan Keely, is available to respond to pastoral care concerns in her absence. He can be reached at 301.493.8300 or ekeely@cedarlane.org.

From the Worship Committee:
One space available!

Have some great ideas about how to improve our worship services? Is worship something you like thinking about, and doing something about? The Worship Committee works with the ministers and the congregation to ensure that worship remains engaging and meaningful. It is the committee that launched the Worship Associates' program, and the joys and concerns chalice at the side of the auditorium in each worship service, and we consider everything from how welcoming our services seem to how to better include children and teens. Meetings are on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.; terms are for two years, and it's a lively bunch of folks. If you're interested in joining us, please contact Worship Committee Chair Jack Welch, jack1165@gmail.com.

Getting Active at Cedar Lane
Our church has repeatedly affirmed its position as a welcoming church - we welcome all people regardless of their beliefs, nationality or sexual orientation or any of the many other traits human beings use to separate themselves and others into groups. Never-the-less, new members often say that after they have joined Cedar Lane they haven't gotten involved or formed meaningful relationships. At the same time, there are committees, clubs, and projects that are anxiously looking for the help and enthusiasm of new members. Cedar Lane is like life - you get out of it what you put into it.
With that in mind, we are trying something new to help put those desirous of being more involved and connected at Cedar Lane, in touch with the various groups that would welcome their participation.
Check out the lounge this Sunday for info about church groups that you may like to join, and that would love to have you!

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci

This Sunday we sing of love and also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Dedication of our Cannarsa Organ on Sunday, October 18, 1987. Thomas Guthrie begins the morning on a festive note with Grayston Ives' Intrada. Ives, born in 1948, is a British composer who sang as a child chorister at Ely Cathedral and later studied at Cambridge University. "Bill" was a member of the King's Singers from 1978-1985. As organist at Madgalen College, Oxford, he composed sacred music and music for royal occasions and was recipient of the Lambeth (Doctorate of Music) award conferred by the Archbishop of Cambridge. His sonorous style of writing in the Intrada features the full balance of the organ's keyboard befitting its premiere at the Her Majesty the Queen's Silver Jubilee Thanksgiving Service in St. Paul's Cathedral on June 7, 1979.
In embracing the theme of love in this Sunday's service Bell Canto rings a simple melody with cascading accompaniment in Love Will Find a Way.
Click here to continue reading this Sunday's music notes...
Special thanks to Thomas Guthrie, the Choir, and Bell Canto for providing such beautiful and inspiring music with which to celebrate the day.

Thank you for helping to make things happen! If you're among the 412 people who completed the Congregational Surveys or the approximately 150 folks who have attended Cottage Meetings, we thank you. There's still time to turn in your anonymous survey at the front desk in the office. We'll soon summarize the survey results and your comments on the website and in eNews. In the meantime, see if you can answer the questions about survey responses in the box below.
1. What percentage of respondents are ages 20-39?
a) 4.5% b) 12.5% c) 22.5%
2. What percentage of respondents travel 15 minutes or more from home to CLUUC?
a) 17% b) 31% c) 52%
3. How many of the 412 respondents have held a leadership position (serving as a member of the Board of Trustees or chairing a committee) in the last 4 years?
a) 38 b) 73 c) 113
Answers will be in next week's eNews.
By October 31 we will complete the Search Packet that we will send to prospective ministers. It will give a snapshot of who we are, what we are looking for in a new senior minister, and our hopes and dreams for the future. We'll place a copy in the office for your reading pleasure. It's been an honor for us to get to meet you. We promise to keep the train rolling toward our destination. Stay tuned for more specifics on our progress with dates and details. Your continued involvement and interest are needed and appreciated. Questions? See us in the lounge after services or email us at seniorsearch@cedarlane.org.
