WEEKLY ARTICLE:

The Benefits Of Getting Dirty

I had a really stressful weekend!

My computer modem died, and that set off a pretty huge anxiety fueled stress reaction in my body! Even though electronics are not my thing, I am seriously attached to my modem. Aren't we all??

It was a Friday night, of course. The weekend was looming without a hope of getting anyone over here to help me.

Stress and Anxiety set in!

So after spending a good deal of my day Saturday dealing with the modem issue with the help of a few really good friends, I finally put everything down and went over to my favorite spot, the neighborhood turtle pond, in an attempt to clear my head.

I love the peace, quiet, and solitude of the turtle pond.

I also love the silly carefree antics of the turtles! It lightens my mood every time.

But today, sitting in the grass on the shores of the pond, something else wonderful happened.

The tension drained from my body. The coolness of the grass soothed me. The gentle breeze cooled me, and I felt like a kid at the playground!

I let the weight of the world fall off my shoulders, if only for a moment!

I took my shoes off and felt the friendly sensation of the earth beneath my feet as I dug my bare feet into the ground

It felt so good.

I dug my hands into the grass and earth, got my fingernails dirty, and enjoyed it so much!!

I all but flopped around like the silly carefree turtles.

It got me thinking about how important it is to get out in nature and commune with the microbes in the earth. And you can only do that by getting down and dirty.

Getting dirty is beneficial on so many levels.

Studies have shown that:

~Hospital patients who have a view of nature, or even a picture of a natural scene on on the wall, have quicker recovery times than those who don't.

~ People who spend three or more hours a day outdoors in natural light have better vision than those who don't.

~ More time in nature correlates with better concentration and intellectual performance.

~ Breathing deeply while outside in nature allows us to inhale healthy and friendly bacteria laden probiotic microbes. Trees and plants emit chemical compounds called phytoncides. Phytoncides are like natural antimicrobial air fresheners. Phytoncide studies have shown that these natural compounds that plants and trees release into the atmosphere increase human natural killer cells, which in turn keep viruses, tumors, and cancer cells at bay. How cool is that?! Breathe. Breathe!

~There is a common soil bacterium called M. vaccae that has been found to increase the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine - the feel good brain chemicals that alleviate moodiness, anxiety, and depression. Gardening is a nice healthy way to commune with these earth friendly ~ mood elevating microbes!!

~ Therefore, eating fresh produce, organic of course, from healthy soil, provides these same important microbes that the body can use to boost immunity.

~ Taking a "soil based" probiotic supplement boosts the immune system and improves digestion and absorption via an infusion of friendly earthy gut bacteria such as M. vaccae and more.

It is hard to go wrong when you commune with nature.

In Japan, there is a custom called Shinrin Yoku or "Forest Bathing" where you immerse yourself in the beauty of the forest.

It employs embracing all of the senses while outdoors, by touching the plants, smelling everything, listening to the animal sounds and whispering pines (or palm fronds here in Florida!), and really being in the present moment and fully seeing, hearing, and feeling all that is around you.

Forest Bathing is very popular in Japan because it boosts your mood, makes you feel happier, enhances focus, and creates better sleep.

And best of all, it is free of charge, available to all, and all that you need is a little patch of nature in which to bathe. Even houseplants will work in a pinch.

Get down and dirty with nature any way that you like. Absorb nature's healing soil based microbes and give your immune system a nice boost!

May health, happiness, and prosperity be your unavoidable natural state and your ongoing daily experience.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
