Taro Root Plaster
You will need:
- 50% freshly grated taro root (or albi powder-see below)
- 5% grated ginger (or ground, dried ginger)
- 45% wheat flour (white flour is the best for plasters because it is the most glutinous)
Remove the skin from the taro root and then grate the root. Mix (using the percentages listed above) the grated taro root, the ginger, and the wheat flour with a little water. Mix thoroughly; the consistency should be that of an easily spreadable paste.
Apply the mixture to the affected area, to a thickness between 1/4 - 1/2 inch.
Use a flannel cloth to hold the Albi mixture over the affected area. Keep the plaster in place with gauze wrap or other appropriate type of cloth or bandage.
A ginger compress can be worn before or after the albi plaster to increase its effectiveness. Wear the plaster for 4-5 hours. The first time you use it, change the plaster after 2 hours. It is best to keep it on day and night. During night-time use, you can leave it on up to, but not more than, 12 hours.
Should the plaster cause a skin irritation, cover the inflamed area with sesame oil before applying any further plasters.
* Please be advised: Before trying any home remedy, always seek the advice of a qualified macrobiotic counselor and / or your medical doctor, especially if you have any type of health condition. |

WEEKLY ARTICLE:
The Healing Power Of Taro Root
We wonder if anyone even knows what taro root is? It is a rather obscure food here in the United States.
But we use it fairly often in our Wholly Macro menus, so we thought we would tell you a little about it because it's healing benefits are absolutely amazing!
Taro is considered one of the first cultivated plants in human history and has been an important part of global cuisine for thousands of years.
It is native to Asia and India, but is now cultivated and used in many countries throughout the world.
Taro root contains compounds, vitamins, and minerals that are essential for human health, benefiting overall health in many ways.
Taro root contains high levels of dietary fiber, complex and energy promoting carbohydrates, and high amounts of vitamins A, C, E, B6, and folate. It is also high in minerals such as magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, and copper.
|
Digestive Health:
Taro root helps to prevent excess gas, bloating, cramping, and constipation, while promoting strong digestion due to its high fiber content. A healthily regulated gastrointestinal system can greatly boost overall health and reduce the chance of various types of cancer.
Cancer Prevention:
Taro root plays an important role in promoting antioxidant activity in our body. The high levels of vitamin A, C, and other phenolic antioxidants found in taro root, boosts our immune system and helps it to eliminate dangerous free radicals from its complex and important, intricate and protective system.
Heart Health:
Taro root is high in potassium, an essential mineral needed to maintain a healthy and functional cardiovascular system. Potassium facilitates healthy fluid movement in the blood vessels, membranes, and tissues of the heart,
lungs, and entire body by relaxing the blood vessels and relieving the stress and pressure on them.
Skin Health:
With its high content of Vitamin A and E, taro root nourishes and protects the integrity and appearance of our skin, eliminating skin conditions, and boosting overall cellular health. This means that wounds and blemishes can heal faster, wrinkles can be diminished, and the skin can maintain its natural healthy glow.
Immune System Health:
A most important quality of taro root is its role in the health of the immune system. It has very high levels of vitamin C, an important antioxidant that stimulates the immune system to create more white blood cells to defend the body from foreign pathogens.
|
Taro root can also be used in a number of home remedies, the most well known of which is its use as a very powerful plaster / drawing agent to pull toxins from the body.
Home remedies are ancient traditional healing practices and can be either internal, such as drinks and teas, or external, such as compresses and plasters.
What is unique about home remedies is that the healing foods that they utilize are used more frequently, and in a more concentrated form, than they would be in regular cooking. They can get to the root of a specific problem quickly, and target and ease a specific condition or inflammation very directly.

A Wholly Macro True Story About The Taro Plaster Home Remedy:
When I first started my healthy adventure in 1996 I was healing from breast cancer. All of the healthy food information was overwhelming to me. I had no knowledge or use for home remedies. I just could not incorporate them into my limited world. My brain could not take on anything more than the shopping, chopping, and cooking! I believed in the power of the food to heal my body 100%, but did not understand, and therefore had my doubts about the power of home remedies.
Shortly after my healing journey began, a lump the size of a large grape popped up on my forearm, on the opposite side of my body from where the cancer had been.
I panicked. I made an appointment with the oncologist, and also spoke to a macrobiotic counselor.
The counselor suggested I do an external plaster over the lump. It involved taro potato. I remember that I had to search all over South Florida to locate a taro potato. I really didn't have any idea what a taro potato was, which made the search for one even harder!
The entire time, I was shaking my head and muttering about how silly the entire venture was. A friend commented that I believed so much in the food, and wondered why I had such little faith in the plaster. I really had no answer. I just could not connect those particular dots at the time.
But after finally locating the elusive taro potato, I proceeded to follow the instructions on how to make the plaster, wrapping it around my arm that night before bed, and sleeping with the concoction all night.
In the morning I removed the plaster as instructed, and to my total disbelief and amazement, the lump had shrunk to less than half it's size. I repeated the entire process the following night, and the next morning the lump was gone. I could feel a little hollow indentation where it had been, and still bear a small scar to this day. But no more lump.
I cancelled the Doctors appointment.
Was it a new cancer, or was it just a cystic or fatty discharge? I don't know to this day. I only know that it was gone, and in those two nights, I became a believer in home remedies. The understanding of their use became one of my many areas of interest, pursuit, and expertise.
| I'm A Believer - The Monkees |
If you decide to try the taro plaster, or any other home remedy, Have fun with them. Use them well and in good health. And please be advised: Before trying any home remedy, always seek the advice of a qualified macrobiotic counselor and / or your medical doctor if you have a serious health condition.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor |
