WEEKLY ARTICLE

Smash And Grab

This week's newsletter article is called Smash And Grab.

It is a repeat of a newsletter we have sent out a few times over the years.

We are repeating it this week because every time we make the particular dish that this article refers to, we feel the need to share our favorite way to enjoy this dish with everyone.

Many of you may be familiar with the Smash And Grab method, but may need reminding. And just as many of you may not have ever read this article, so will find the information below especially enlightening.

Here it goes:

When we say "Smash And Grab", it is not what you think!!

We mean it in a good way, because what we are referring to is smashing and then pan - frying our Sesame ~ Umeboshi Nori Rice Balls before you grab (and gobble) them!

Maybe we should call this newsletter Grab And Gobble!

While it is easy enough, and totally okay to simply eat our delicious and convenient rice balls as is, what we here at Wholly Macro really LOVE to do with them, is to pan-fry them before eating

How To Pan Fry A Rice Ball:

We do this by brushing a stainless steel or cast iron pan with regular un-toasted sesame oil, olive oil, or coconut oil, then slowly, on a medium flame, bringing it to a medium high temperature. We want it hot, but not smoking hot.

Just to clarify: We want to be smoking hot, and we all are, aren't we (because we eat such healthy food), but we definitely don't want our cooking oil to be smoking hot!

Anyway, where were we??

Oh, right. The rice balls! Once the pan gets nice and hot, place a rice ball in the pan, and gently smash it so that it is a little flatter and more of it can make contact with the hot oil. Let it sizzle away. Let the sesame seeds snap, crackle, and pop as they heat up and get nice and crisp. Flip it, and repeat on the other side.

Then eat and enjoy!!

Rice balls were invented to be a perfect travel food.

But here at Wholly Macro we think of them as a perfect "grab and go" snack or meal.

They are compact, very nutrient dense and filling, and because they contain umeboshi plum, which acts a natural preservative due to it's pickled state, the rice balls can last for a long time, up to a week and beyond.

Here at Wholly Macro we always take rice balls with us when traveling, whether our travels are as simple as a trip to our own kitchen, or as extensive as an afternoon or evening away from our home.

We love to take them on big trips too, because once we arrive at our destination and refrigerate the rice balls, there is nothing as convenient and satisfying as a few rice balls as is, or a few smashed and fried rice balls to grab while on the go!

I Feel A Wholly Macro True Story Coming On!

On my recent four-day trip to Oklahoma, here is what I did:

I brought four containers of rice balls with me, each containing four large rice balls per container.

I brought an electric hot pot for boiling water, a jar of fresh miso, and a package of toasted nori.

I bought a few gallons of water when I arrived.

And made sure to stay at a hotel that had a refrigerator (for the rice balls, and whatever else I picked up along the way).

I did not get a hotel with a kitchen as it was such a short trip, and I wasn't going to have time to cook!

So each morning, I boiled a pot of water, poured it into a bowl (that I had procured from the hotel restaurant), added a spoon of miso to create a miso broth, added two rice balls to the broth, then tore a sheet of nori into little squares and dropped it into the rice ball - miso soup mixture.

Then I sat down at the nice big table in my room, which was situated in front of a window with a lovely view, and enjoyed my "brunch" before zooming out for a long day with family.

Oklahoma City National Memorial

It was absolutely delicious, and got me going each day on a very solid, blood sugar stabilizing, balanced, and grounded note.

Since I was with family, the trip could not be all about my food needs. So I took my remaining two rice balls with me for use later in the day if needed, not knowing where I would end up, or when I would get back to my room.

Even if I didn't use them, just knowing that I had them as back up was very comforting and reassuring.

I ended up with a container and a half of rice balls remaining at the end of the four days.

I ate the half container of rice balls on the flight home: two nice, big, healthy and fulfilling rice balls amidst a sea of fast food joints in the airport - NO thanks -  and arrived home with one full container of rice balls left over.

Jaime and I fried them the next day for lunch using the Smash And Grab method, and they were absolutely scrumptious!

There was no way for me to fry them while at the hotel in Oklahoma, so I enjoyed them for their superior nutrition and ease of travelling, as is while there.

But once back home and able to fry them, it was a real treat to enjoy the one remaining container of rice balls all crisped up and pan-fried!

Wherever you are, and however you enjoy your rice balls, please make sure that you do so in a civilized way. And by civilized, we mean that you can smash and fry your rice balls, or grab them and go as is, but you cannot eat them (or anything) on the go.

Please always be sure to sit down to eat your meal.

Look at your food and appreciate the life force that it contains and is about to transfer to you. This type of visual observation actually initiates digestion by stimulating the flow of gastric juices and digestive enzymes.

Eat slowly and breathe deeply while eating.

Food combined with oxygen burns more calories than food without oxygen!

Chew well. The rice balls are a real mouthful, so be sure to chew them thoroughly.

We have several other delightful dishes on the menu this week besides the Rice Balls.

So please take a look at this week's menu items (below).

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
