About This Weeks Menu

WEEKLY ARTICLE:

Saint Francis of Fort Lauderdale

I'm not sure what I was going to write about tonight, because that thought sort of flew out the window when I found "the bird".

There is the sweetest natural pond in our neighborhood.

And it is full of wildlife, including turtles.

We call it The Turtle Pond.

Here is a little video of it. The turtles are really glad to see me!

Two to three times a week I visit the pond to feed the turtles. And whatever birds that happen to inevitably show up for a bite. And sometimes even a stray iguana or two.

They all know me.

I am Saint Francis of Fort Lauderdale!

I always scan the pond to make sure all is well, and then wander it's boundaries to pick up any litter that lands there as well.

The pond is a beautiful and quiet spot in the middle of this crazy big city, and I just love visiting it.

It calms and soothes me.

And it is always interesting and full of natural surprises.

Today there was a white "thing" floating around on the other side of the edge of the pond.

A rather big piece of paper I thought. And made a mental note to go fish it out after I finished feeding the turtles.

But to my dismay, I noticed the white thing moving. Flapping. Struggling.

Oh no I thought, it can't be a bird.

Shoot. Why does this always happen to me!!

How long has it been there.

What happened to it.

Why didn't anyone else find it???

Did I mention that it was dinnertime, and that I was starving?

I always tell Jaime that I am going to run over to the pond to feed the turtles "real quick", before it gets dark, which is always before sitting down to eat.

He rolls his eyes, because he knows that I almost always run into a neighbor, or even a (friendly) stranger, and "real quick" ends up taking much longer than expected.

Today was turning out to be no different.

And darkness was approaching.

What to do. What to do.

I couldn't leave the poor bird there, trapped in the water, struggling to climb out onto the bank. It was exhausting itself.

I couldn't tell if it was an ibis or an egret. Both frequent the pond. But we do have a flock of ibis in this neighborhood that have been coming here for fifty plus years according to long time neighbors, so I suspected it was one of them.

I ran home to get Jaime.

Jaime is a Colombian "bird whisperer".

Really!

He has the ability to approach a bird, and the bird lets him catch and hold it. He does it with healthy and injured birds alike. I have seen him do it many times over the years.

He was totally on it.

He got some gloves (didn't even use them though), got a few towels, and off to the pond we went.

The bird panicked and resisted for a moment, but then let Jaime pick it up. Just like that.

It was in fact an ibis.
It was hard to tell what was wrong with it, but it clearly couldn't fly. And it was very subdued, soaking wet, and just not at all feisty.

We put it in our cat carrier and called the wildlife rescue.

Which was closed.

Of course.

It was Saturday night by now.

But they do have a nice message saying that they have cages out front to leave injured wildlife in, so we headed over.

In the pouring rain.

Before we headed out, we checked the carrier for signs of life, because the bird had not moved or made a sound since we rescued it.

It was very quiet and very still, but it was still alive.

So we headed over.

The wildlife rescue facility was beautiful actually.

What a nice place.

Very clean and well cared for.

The cages were big, with clean towels on the bottom, and nicely covered and protected from the elements.

They also had a sign right there saying that they check the cages frequently, which was encouraging.

Now we just had to get the bird from the carrier to the cage without mishap.

Jaime the bird whisperer to the rescue again.

He gently moved his friend the bird.

Somehow.

I couldn't watch.

I filled out the intake form while he moved the bird.

In the rain!

But at least the bird was well protected and dry, even if we were now soaking wet!

And then, like two mother hens, we peered into the cage to take a good look at the bird and reassure it that it would be "okay".

And to our surprise, it stood up, albeit a little unbalanced, and peeped at us. Twice.

I really think it was thanking us.

It looked good when we left it, much perkier.

I think it is a baby that may have injured itself while learning to fly.

It is quite large, but not nearly as large as a full-grown ibis.

I don't think. I don't know!

But I think we left it in good hands.
I left all of my contact info on the intake form, and even asked them if they could return it to this neighborhood and it's "flock" if it survives.

I hope. I hope.

Send healing energy, okay?

We'll keep you posted if you are interested.

It is a cliffhanger though, because this is our last newsletter for two weeks!

But you can always email me, and I'll let you know you what I know.

And until then:

Have a great two weeks everyone.

We'll look forward to hearing from you again for the week of September 16.

May health, happiness, and prosperity be your unavoidable natural state and your ongoing daily experience.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
