 WEEKLY ARTICLE

Seasonal Exercise

It was 90 degrees outside here in south Florida just last week.

What a way to close out March and usher in April.

We can only wonder what happened to spring!

Nature seems to have given us an all too early little teaser of what is in store for us when summer arrives!

I however, had my eyes on the weather maps, eagerly anticipating and awaiting the cold front that was predicted to reach us, even as I sweated it out while it took it's sweet time getting here!

But alas, it finally arrived. And what a difference it made!

I entered Whole Foods the Friday afternoon that the cold front arrived, amidst a hot and sultry 90 degree SW wind. The sun was beating down on me as I crossed the parking lot. I felt like I was in Death Valley in the middle of the summer! Except that it was still March!

When I walked out of Whole Foods less than an hour later, the wind had shifted to a strong NW direction, and the temperature outside had dropped a full 20 degrees. My car said that it was now 72 degrees out.

That is freezing for us here in South Florida BTW!! And a true sign of a full on cold front!

I'll take it.

No questions asked!

I also knew, that if it was 72 degrees in the late afternoon, it would be in the 50's or 60's that night.

So as much as I desired to go to the beach and take a swim during the intolerably hot week leading up to the Friday of the "cold front", I resisted, knowing that the temperature was going to become more seasonally cooler in a few days, and that my body was not ready to go into cool down mode via the ocean water just yet.

Just as Wholly Macro changes our delivery menu's throughout the year to reflect the changing seasons, we also change our lifestyle habits and exercise routines, not only to fully take advantage of what each season has to offer, but to both nourish and nurture our bodies as will, with the right exercise for the right season.

This is SO important, that we are going to give you a quick rundown of a yearly, seasonal, exercise flow.

We will start with winter because it is the season we have most recently been experiencing. Some of us more than others. Our condolences to our northern friends!

Winter:

Winter is the season of storage. We must conserve our energy and our body warmth during this season.

It is a busy busy time of year, and it is far too easy to become run down.

When you over exert during the winter, your adrenal system becomes run down, leading to an inability to deal with stress. Fatigue, exhaustion, and a weakened immune system are an example of this. (Winter flu season comes to mind!).

The winter season is associated with the kidneys, and the kidneys govern the bones, joints, and adrenals. So any exercise that keeps your circulation flowing, and that opens up your joints, without over exertion, will help your body during this season.

Yoga is a great winter exercise as it can be done indoors (or out depending on your location). As is Tai Chi.

Outdoor activities that produce warmth are best during the winter to really rev up the circulation and promote body warmth. Again, depending on your location, you can walk, jog, bike, ski, or chop firewood! Just don't over exert.

You do not want to do outside exercise that isn't active, because you don't want to lose body heat during the winter (in most instances).

Which is exactly why swimming is not recommended during the winter.

And totally why I didn't give in to my urge to take a refreshing ocean swim a few weeks ago when our temperatures topped off at 90 degrees.

I knew that the temperatures were going to get much cooler again and that winter was not quite over.

The kidneys do not like cold, and although warm water really nurtures the kidneys, they don't do well at all with cold water. Taking a dip in cold water during the winter is a sure way to create stiff bones and joints!

Save the swimming for summer!

Spring:

Spring is a playful season. It is a time to release all that was stored during the winter. To open up and release the entire body, welcoming and making room for the new!

It is a time to renew.

Dancing comes to mind in the spring. As does gardening. These are both fun and revitalizing exercises that are perfect for spring. Although we have to say: Gardening in the winter in South Florida is a pretty great activity as well!

Spring, being related to the liver and gallbladder, loves the color green. So really get into nature.

Walk barefoot in the fresh green grass, and physically reconnect with the earth.

 Connecting with the earth
by walking barefoot outside
allows the free electrons of the earth's surface
to enter the body and reset
and synchronize it's bio-electrical systems.
This full body reboot greatly reduces
inflammation, stiffness, and pain.

You don't want to do spring exercises such as the above until spring has truly sprung and there is no chance of a surprise cool down, because you don't want your spring activities to harm your winter kidney organs.

Summer:

Summer is related to the heart, and the heart needs great circulation in order to thrive.

Nothing keeps the circulatory system (and heart) in better tune than exercise.

So feel free to get outside and sweat!

While sweating outside in the cold during the winter is not advisable (you don't want to be damp and catch a chill), summer is the perfect season in which to take full advantage of sweating as a powerfully cleansing way to eliminate toxins via the skin.

Sweating also brings inner heat to the surface of the body, and releases it. So the dampness of a summer sweat is actually and ultimately cooling.

Don't overdo it though. Use common sense. Don't jog at noon.

During the heat of the summer, reserve your outdoor exercise for early morning, late afternoon, and / or evening.

Summer evenings are magical!

Be sure to hydrate well during the summer, and naturally, with spring water, herbal tea, and coconut water.

But don't drink your summer hydration cold.

Cold drinks are BAD for both the digestion and the kidneys, no matter how hot it is outside!

Did we mention swimming??

There is no season more perfect for swimming than summer.

Even if the water is cold, a quick dip and then a warm bake in the sun does wonders for the circulatory system.

And if the water is warm, especially if it is ocean water, it is like a tonic for the kidneys, and a great way to infuse them with strength for the upcoming winter.

We think of a warm ocean swim as natural dialysis here at Wholly Macro.

It is a powerful way to aid your body in thoroughly cleansing the blood and the kidneys.

Fall:

Fall is a time of change and transition.

The days shorten, all too suddenly thanks to Daylight Savings Time, and suddenly our enjoyment of the great outdoors begins to turn inward as well.

Exercise can be quite vigorous during the fall, as outdoor activity can be done during the middle of the day, and over exertion and dehydration are not as big of a concern as they were during the summer.

In many areas of the country (and world), sports (football, soccer, etc.) abound during the fall, when the weather is a bit cooler, and long and exertive outdoor activities can be enjoyed and tolerated at any hour of the day, and well before the avoidance of over exertion during the winter comes into play.

And besides, it is a powerful burst of one last cheerful salute to the enjoyment and glory of the summer season!

But before we say a final goodbye to our fun in the sun summer activities as we turn to fall, we can still enjoy long hikes, bike rides, and perhaps even one last swim.

Be sure though, to watch the weather carefully, and to stop swimming in advance of the first cool down of the season in order to go into the cooler season with super strong summer warmed kidneys and adrenals.

The last thing that you want to do is enter into winter with cold kidneys.

The idea is to weather each season well, and not freeze to death in the winter, and suffer the heat terribly in the summer.

The most natural way to do this is to use fall and spring as the transitional seasons that they are. Use fall and spring to prepare your body and give it time to adjust to the arrival of the extremes of winter and summer.

The best and only way to do this is through both diet and lifestyle.

All of the seasons of the year are so beautiful, each in their own way.

And they each lend themselves well to their respective and optimal traditions, customs, foods, and exercises.

Which is why it is SO important to eat seasonally, and to exercise seasonally, and why, as we go into spring, we have devoted this weeks entire article to this all so important topic!

We hope that our article makes you much more aware of the cycle of the seasons in relation to exercise.

Since our readers are SO international, spanning the entire globe, please tune into and follow the ENERGETIC flow of the earth's seasons in your own neck of the woods. Adjust and accommodate them to your own unique hemispheric and climatic conditions, following the general guidelines that we have outlined and emphasized above..

What's that you say?? You don't exercise??? Well, after reading this article, we hope that you will be much more inspired to do so!

May health, happiness, and prosperity be your unavoidable natural state and your ongoing daily experience.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
