Glossary Of Disease Fighting Foods  

aka Phytochemical Nutritional Jargon

 


We spend a lot of time here at Wholly Macro throwing around big fancy words like phytochemical, phytonutrient, antioxidant, probiotic, and so on.


But what in the world do those words really mean??

It has come to our attention, that the words, without a clear definition, sound good, but that it would be far more useful to all of us to actually know what they mean.

So we have compiled a little glossary of nutritional jargon for you, so that the next time you read one of these big words, you will know what they mean.


 Our line of thought is that if we have a better understanding of the really amazing super food qualities contained within a food, we will have a greater desire to seek those foods out and infuse our bodies with their life giving properties.

Lets begin!  

 

Phytochemicals - Phytochemicals are chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants. Phyto means "plant" in Greek. Some are responsible for color, such as the deep purple of red cabbage and blueberries, and others for the distinct odor of a food, such as garlic. Still others are responsible for the healing properties of various foods. Phytochemicals have been studied and expounded upon as preventative natural "medicine" for millennia. Hippocrates writings - Let Food Be Thy Medicine - are amongst the first known references to plant based medicinal, disease fighting foods. Phytochemicals are found abundantly in freshly harvested and unprocessed plant foods. There may be as many as 4,000 different phytochemicals contained within our valuable, friendly, life giving and life saving plant foods!! So if you don't eat all of the available plant foods, in variety daily, you are bound to be missing out on valuable phytochemicals!

 

Antioxidants - Antioxidants are substances that slow down

oxidation. Oxidation is a natural process that leads to cell and tissue damage, and may contribute, probably does in fact, to disease and aging. Antioxidants occur naturally, in abundance, in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, preventing oxidation (and aging) of our cells, tissue, skin, and organs.

 

Resveratrol - Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant, and research suggests that it slows cancer growth, reduces inflammation, and prevents blood clot formation. Resveratrol is found in grapes, peanuts, and raspberries among other foods. And yes, wine. But please make sure that the wine is natural and / or organic; otherwise the harmful chemicals contained within cause more damage than the resveratrol could ever repair.

 

Carotenoids - Upward of 600 forms of carotenoids have been found in plants. And that is just to date! There are most likely countless more forms that have yet to be identified. Most carotenoids behave similarly to antioxidants. Some are used by the body to make vitamin A, which is critical to eye health. Other common carotenoids such as beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein have been linked to the reduced risk of disease. Studies have found that beta-carotene for example may play a role in preventing heart disease and certain types of cancer. Beta-carotene is primarily found in orange and yellow vegetables, so please be sure to always include a BIG variety of these colorful vegetables in your diet.

 

 
 
 

Polyphenols - Polyphenols are found in many fruits and vegetables. They are a subgroup of phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties. Flavonoids are an example of a polyphenol that research indicates prevent heart disease and cancer.

 

Flavonoids - Are a subcategory of polyphenols that may help lower the risk of cancer, heart disease, and blood vessel disease. Flavonoids can be found in fruits, vegetables, and tea.

 

Isoflavones - Isoflavones are a subgroup of flavonoids! They are plant-based estrogen like compounds that have long been studied for their positive effects on cancer, and more recently, for their positive effect on bone health and heart disease as well.

 

 

Fructo-oligosaccharides - Also known as FOS, are part of the fructose molecule, and are found naturally in whole grains, onions, garlic, asparagus, and  greens. FOS on it's own is not digestible, but within your colon it stimulates the growth and maintenance of beneficial bacteria, improving digestive health, among other important disease preventing qualities.

 


 

Prebiotics - Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrate fibers, (like FOS), that are naturally occurring and contained within food. They fuel the growth of healthy gut bacteria within the digestive tract.

 

Probiotics - Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria that form within

 foods during the process of fermentation, and / or are added  to foods in the form of cultures and supplements to improve the ratio of health enhancing "good" bacteria in your intestinal tract. Miso, sauerkraut, olives, and kombucha are examples of fermentation, whereas yogurt, tempeh, and natto are examples of live cultures that are added to foods to start the fermentation process. 



 

Omega 3 Fatty Acids - Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for normal growth, good vision, and proper cognitive development and function. They are naturally anti-inflammatory, and may reduce the risk of heart disease and sudden cardiac death. These life giving polyunsaturated fatty acids are also known as DHA, EPA, and ALA.

 

DHA and EPA are found in the oil of certain types of fish, such as salmon, tuna, and krill.

 


 
 

ALA, which the body converts to omega 3 fatty acid, is found in the oil of nuts, seeds, and vegetables, such as soybeans, walnuts, flax seeds, and evening primrose.

 

And last but far from least:

The tip of the iceberg if you will, of the nutrients that are known, and even as we speak being discovered in whole natural foods!

 

We hope that this little glossary somewhat explains WHY it is SO important to include a huge variety of fresh, natural, and unprocessed plant foods in your diet on a daily and ongoing basis, for your own health, for the health of everyone that you share food with, and for the ultimate health of the entire human race, and the beautiful planet that we so fondly call home.

 

Planet earth needs plants and phytochemicals to function properly too!

A thick, creamy, liver nourishing puree of green split peas cooked with mineral rich kombu sea vegetable, speckled with dices of carrots, parsnips, and yellow onions, powerfully cleansing and immune system boosting shiitake mushrooms, gentle and relaxing mineral rich wakame sea vegetable, enzyme rich sweet yellow miso, and a garnish of tofu sour cr�me sprinkled with fresh dill. 

BROWN RICE AND JEWELED FRENCH YELLOW COUSCOUS PILAF

Lovely little pearls of French yellow couscous, and perfectly balanced whole grain brown rice, are cooked with mineral rich kombu sea vegetable, then jeweled with glistening dices of yellow onion, deep purple dried currants, naturally fermented, friendly bacteria promoting black olives, trace mineral rich green pumpkin seeds, chlorophyll rich bright green parsley, and liver cleansing slivers of orange zest.

**Wholly Macro makes every attempt to maintain a totally vegan and allergen free kitchen cooking environment. We make every effort to avoid any type of cross contamination during food preparation. Most foods used in the Wholly Macro kitchen are not packaged, but instead are bought in the produce section or in bulk. But as you know, cross contamination is always a possibility, especially with bulk items. And in the few packaged foods that we do use, such as nut butters for example, it is common to find warnings on the manufacturer label stating that the item was processed in a plant that handles tree nuts, soy, wheat, dairy, gluten, shellfish, and so on.  

 

Wholly Macro cannot be responsible for trace amounts of common food allergens that come from outside (packaged  or bulk items), and therefore end up occurring within our prepared foods. Please use your own discretion in determining if our food is appropriate for your consumption, especially if you have severe food allergies.

 

We are always available to clarify any of the ingredients that we use, and assist you in your weekly selections, but we cannot keep track of your food allergies, sensitivities, likes, dislikes or preferences.
