 WEEKLY ARTICLE

E-Smoke IS Hazardous To Your Health

I was invited to a 50th birthday party this weekend.

Regular people. Not my usual health food crowd.

I don't know about you, but I find it harder and harder to relate to people who are not at least somewhat health conscious.

But at the same time, I always try to surround myself with a variety of people and experiences, because you never know what you may learn from the most unlikely of sources.

And I am fascinated with humankind and love to learn from observation.

And, after all of these years of pursuing a healthy diet and lifestyle, and limiting myself severely to strictly healthy settings only, I am determined to be able to make most situations work for me.

I feel that limitation is a form of extremism, and I like to focus on balance, not extremism.

I can only take "unhealthy" in small doses though, and the party last night pushed me to my limit, for this week!

The choice was to stay indoors and deal with the roar of humanity while missing the late afternoon / early evening, my favorite time of day. Or, to venture outside to the patio where a small group of people were gathered around a lovely table and chairs.

I chose the patio, and as I headed outside, intending to be social, the unmistakable whiff of cigarette smoke overtook me.

I had not even considered this. I mean, who smokes anymore??!!

I stopped dead in my tracks.

Awkward!

But one has to set limits somewhere, and mine are set when it comes to inhaling second hand cigarette smoke.

It is too bad that the great outdoors has become the smoker's hangout.

Crazy!

I slowly backed away from the outdoor crowd, but very much wanted to remain outdoors, so I choose a spot well upwind from the smokers and made myself comfortable, hoping not to appear too antisocial!

I felt I had the right to take care of myself and to breathe fresh air, and am well versed by now in feeling comfortable in my solitude.

Soon though, the smokers drifted over to me, with drinks and cigarettes in hand.

Sometimes you just have to give in to the situation at hand.

I have learned that you can't fight the world.

And out of respect for the birthday boy I had chosen to attend the event, so making sure to remain upwind at all times, I engaged in polite conversation with the smokers!!

It was either that, or bolt indoors!

I didn't know anyone at the party, but they were all fun loving and nice.

And more than a few of them were smoking e-cigarettes.

It was somewhat of a relief to me. Less smelly cigarette "smoke", but plenty of harmful "vapor".

Fortunately, it was not fooling me!

Sadly, it was fooling the e-smokers.

One of them stated that he had had five heart attacks and still could not stop smoking, and that the e-cigarettes had finally saved him.

But I knew that I had to be even more careful than ever not to inadvertently inhale the pretty much odorless, but deadly none the less vapor of the e-cigarette.

Most e-cigarette cartridges are "Made In China", and lead, nickel, and copper have been found to be released into the air (and into the lungs of course) when e-cigarettes are smoked because lead, nickel and copper (and who knows what else) are contained within the cartridge of the e-cigarette.

It is never a good idea to increase your exposure to these (or any) "heavy" metals.

Their half-lives are extremely long, and it is not easy to get them out of your body once absorbed.

Sea vegetables are natural heavy metal chelators, absorbing them, binding them, and very effectively carrying them out of the body.

As is miso!

It is always a good idea to include sea vegetables and miso in the diet, on a daily basis, because pollution is innocuous. We never know where it may come from. Everywhere presumably! Even from seemingly innocent sources.

And while heavy metals are contained within the cartridge of the e-cigarette, and thus emitted upon ignition, the following substances are found in the actual vapor emissions themselves, which are produced from the contents of the e-cigarette, be it first or second hand:

Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, isoprene, acetic acid, acetone, propanol, and of course, nicotine itself.

I don't know.

Are e-cigarettes better, or worse than regular tobacco??

Is there a better or worse when it comes to polluting and irritating not only your own lungs, but also the lungs of all other living breathing beings, including the planet itself?

Fortunately for me, I know how to "defend" myself pretty well at this point.

And while you may ask why I even went to the party at all, I did so to make my friend happy.

But if you, or anyone you know, thinks it is safe to use e-cigarettes in place of regular cigarettes, please be aware of the hidden dangers and consequences of regular tobacco, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and second hand smoke altogether, be it regular or e-smoke, and encourage yourself and others to find more effective ways to kick the bad habit.

You are only as powerless over an addiction as you want or believe yourself to be.

May health, happiness, and prosperity be your unavoidable natural state and your ongoing daily experience.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
