Drum Therapy

About a month ago we were invited to a drumming party by one of our food clients, turned wonderful friend and relative.

Are you wondering how our food client became our relative?

It is such a great little story that I am going to tell you real fast, and then I will get to the drumming, I promise!

For years we were delivering food to a really nice man in Key Biscayne.

What I knew about him, other than that he was a really nice guy, was that he lived with his girlfriend, and owned a restaurant supply company. And of course, over the years, we would exchange emails along with his weekly orders.

A few years ago, he told us that he was retiring. He was selling his business, and was going to be spending his summers in Northern California.

Nice, right?

At about that same time, I got a call from a woman who said that she was my cousin and that she had just moved to South Florida and wished to connect.

I was thrilled. I didn't even know that I had this unknown cousin!! (Another story, another time!).

Not only that, but she said that she was staying with another cousin of mine, a woman in Key Biscayne whose boyfriend had just retired from the restaurant supply business and was conveniently out of town for the summer.

Click, click, click. The old brain cells started turning, slowly slowly connecting the dots, until I said: What is the boyfriend's name?

When she told me, I said: We deliver food to him!

She said: I unpack the food and put it in the fridge!!

It was really great discovering these two lovely cousins, and also discovering that my client lived with one of them.

Shortly after that I got the cutest email ever from my client, the boyfriend.

He said: "I hear we are related"!!

That clinched the deal. We connected like only family can! And it has been fascinating.

Of course my client and I are not "blood" relatives. But we might as well be.

We are related via osmosis!

We don't get to spend enough time with my new found family because we are all so busy. You know, the modern times Mantra: I am SO busy!!

But just knowing that these three wonderful relatives of mine are out there is so heart warming. It has been the greatest gift! I love having them in my life!

So even though I am not a "drummer", I happily accepted the invitation to the drumming party.

I assumed that the drumming part of the party was optional.

You know, like the full moon drumming parties, where you can join in if the spirit moves you, groove to the beat, or just simply socialize.

But this was actually a very formal setting.

The drums were arranged in a circle, and we were all instructed to choose a drum and get seated.

I knew NOTHING about drums. Or drumming. Because you guessed it, I always chose to socialize at the drumming parties I had been to in the past, being the "talker" that I am.

I started out VERY stiffly.

I was self-conscious (of course). As if the whole room was watching me!

My arms protested right away, as did my back. So I quickly attempted to correct my body mechanics, which helped.

And my hands were also hurting from the repeated slapping of the drums.

At this rate, I figured I would not last more than a few minutes!

I had no idea what kind of sound I was creating.

Fortunately, after a few moments of "playing" with the drums, the drumming leaders / instructors gave us a nice little drumming class.

I was amazed at how much I learned about drumming.

Before that, I have to be honest, I considered drumming pretty much nothing but sometimes pleasant, sometimes annoying, background "noise".

But after this first drumming class of my life, my wrists loosened up as I learned how to engage them in the drum strokes, my body relaxed, and in the end, my self-consciousness was forgotten as I literally went into a meditative state amidst the throes of my new found drumming abandon!

Here are some of the good for you things

that I learned about drumming:

There is a significant physical and emotional experiential difference between listening to drumming and actually drumming!

  • Tapping your hands and fingers on the drums is like Reflexology. As you repeatedly tap, the meridians that start and end at your fingertips are stimulated. This sends healing vibrations throughout each meridian and the organs that the meridians correspond to, which is VERY healing. It is like a mini shiatsu / acupuncture session!

  • In the same way that the drumming stimulates the meridians and organs, it also creates a repetitive tapping rhythm, much like the techniques employed in Emotional Freedom Tapping (EFT).

  • Therefore, beating on the drums is a great and productive way to release, and or heal, pent up emotions such as anger and frustration. I have dubbed it Drum Therapy. And I plan to use it for myself, and others, now that I have discovered it.

  • In the same way, drumming thus becomes an excellent form of stress reduction. You may not be angry, or frustrated, but almost all of us are "stressed out". As you drum, you really do forget about your stress. It is hard to remain focused on your stress and maintain even a semblance of a drumbeat! It becomes silly to even try. The silliness leads to unbridled joy and abandon!

  • This leads right into drumming as a form of meditation. Active meditation. Similar to "walking meditation". As you drum, let your mind GO. Soon you will have NO thoughts racing around inside your head. Your only awareness will be the rhythm you have become one with.

  • As you become one with this rhythm, allow yourself to travel back to your roots, to the place that we all originated from. Connect. Ancient humans drummed from as early on as civilization can be traced. No matter the culture of your lineage, you can be pretty sure that your ancestors drummed in one way or another.

  • On a more physical level, drumming is GREAT exercise!! It burns a lot of calories, while releasing feel good endorphins. I am pretty sure that all drummers have great arms! It makes for a nice alternative to weights!

  •  Drumming exercises the brain as well. Not too many forms of exercise engage brain cells and their all-important synapses as extensively as drumming does.

  • Beating harder and louder is not "better". Drum to your own rhythm, at once slow, quiet, and soothing, or more of a quick paced aggressive release if that is what your body tells you it needs. There is no right or wrong. The important thing is to relax into the experience as you let your own spirit move you.

Who knew that drumming is so good for you!!

And although I promised myself that I would not buy one more material thing for the rest of my life, (having accumulated quite the collection of (great) stuff at this stage of the game), I must confess, I am now in the market for a drum!

May health, happiness, and prosperity be your unavoidable natural state and your ongoing daily experience.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
