 Cabbage As Medicine

 You can make a natural drink to help heal stomach ulcers, and soothe irritable bowel symptoms and other digestive issues by juicing raw cabbage. The vitamin and amino acid rich properties contained in raw cabbage juice keep the lining of the digestive tract healthy and can help to heal irritated and / or ulcerated mucosa.

 

Simply juice a wedge of fresh raw cabbage until you have about 4 ounces of pure cabbage juice.

 

You can juice the cabbage in a vegetable juicer or you can hand grate it (finely) and squeeze the juice through a cheesecloth. You will be amazed at how sweet and delicious cabbage juice is!

 

Drink daily, just until symptoms subside, then discontinue the raw juice unless symptoms return.

 

But please continue to habitually include the full cabbage (not just the juice), in your diet and favorite recipes for continued therapeutic benefits.

We wrote the article below in 2011.

 

It is about cabbage, a seriously underrated and under appreciated vegetable that, at the time, we felt deserved some recognition and accolades.

 

Our feelings about cabbage have not changed, and neither has the article.

 

We have repeated it for you below, in its entirety, and we sincerely hope that you will enjoy the cabbage dishes (and all of the other yummy dishes as well) that appear on this week's menu, and in doing so, reap all of the benefits contained within.

 

 

 WEEKLY ARTICLE: The Humble Cabbage 

 

 

There are so many great dishes on this week's menu. Where to begin, where to begin.

 

Hmm. Instead of singling out select dishes, I think we'll focus on one of the nutritional super stars appearing on this week's menu: The Humble Cabbage.

 

Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable that provides integrated nourishment across a wide variety of nutritional categories, thus supporting a wide variety of organ systems and bodily functions. 

 

  

 

In the oriental medicine school of thought (that to which Wholly Macro primarily subscribes), cabbage is especially beneficial to the stomach, spleen, and pancreas, relaxing the overly tight middle section of our bodies as it supports and nourishes those specific organs. But cabbage provides numerous other health benefits as well, such as:

  • Anti - Inflammatory Properties
  • Antioxidant Properties
  • Detoxifying properties
  • Anti - Cancer Properties
  • Cardiovascular Support
  • Digestive Support
  • Blood Sugar Stabilization Support

Cabbage is an excellent source of immune system supporting vitamin C, and anti-inflammatory vitamin K. It is very high in natural fiber, which enables it to greatly support digestive health. It is naturally high in enzyme activating manganese, and contains vitamin B6, folate, and the all important omega 3 fatty acids, all of which support heart health. It contains a high concentration of carotenoid phytonutrients, aka vitamin A, which are well known for their free radical scavenging antioxidant effects. And if that isn't enough, it is also high in bone health promoting calcium and magnesium, and muscle system supporting potassium.

 

 

 

Cutting, chewing, and digesting cabbage activates the unique sulfur containing phytonutrients contained within it. 

These sulfur compounds help activate and stabilize the body's detoxification mechanisms and increase the liver's ability to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially toxic substances. 

 

From a health standpoint, (and what other standpoint is there?), you should enjoy a two cup serving of cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables at least 4-5 times per week. Some of cabbages cruciferous relatives include: broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, mustard greens, bok choy, and collard greens.

 

 

Use and enjoy all of the varieties of cabbage with their myriad of colors, textures, and flavors. We do, as evidenced in the November 20, 2013 Wholly Macro Delivery Menu below.

 

Don't forget to chew well to aid in releasing and digesting the nutrients in your food.

 

And never ever underestimate the hidden power of food in general, and that of the humble cabbage in particular.

SHIITAKE MUSHROOM BARLEY MISO SOUP

A rich and creamy blend of high fiber whole grain barley and pearled barley cooked with mineral rich and digestive kombu sea vegetable, the unique and interesting in flavor medicinal shiitake mushrooms, along with the more traditional cremini mushroom, and sweetly blanched carrot, celery, yellow onion, and parsnip dices, in an enzyme rich, warming and strengthening barley miso, ginger, irish moss, and wakame sea vegetable base, garnished with a sprinkle of fresh green chives.

 Medium grain brown rice is cooked with mineral rich and digestive kombu sea vegetable, then delectably spiked with vibrant, good for the kidneys and adrenals deep red protein rich azuki beans,  brilliantly orange naturally sweet and delicious kabocha squash, circulation stimulating fresh ginger, and a colorful garnish of chlorophyll rich fresh green parsley.

Sweet and succulent leaves of potassium and mineral rich green cabbage, are wrapped around a millet and kombu sea vegetable stuffing, made with low fat and cholesterol free pure protein seitan, saut�ed yellow onions and ginger, good for the spleen/pancreas tangy sweet currants, naturally diuretic crispy slices of celery, high in chlorophyll red blood cell building fresh parsley, powerfully vitalizing roasted pine nuts, and a subtle hint of fresh rosemary.
ORIENTAL PASTA STIR FRY

A Wholly Macro classic; liver healthy brown rice udon noodles are tossed with red onions, cremini and shiitake mushrooms, sweet snap pea pods, protein rich cubes of tofu, whole roasted cashews, circulation stimulating fresh ginger, a splash of toasted sesame oil for flavor, umeboshi plum to alkalize the body and promote digestion, and a garnish of freshly sliced scallions.  
GINGER ALMOND ARAME COLE SLAW

 A lovely blend of textures, flavors, and colors, and healthy too! Barely blanched gently green cabbage, slightly pickled deeply red cabbage, beta carotene rich orange carrots, bright green snow pea slivers, crispy celery, sweet yellow onions, and deep black iron and mineral rich arame sea vegetable, are mixed in a tofu, lemon, mustard, umeboshi plum, and toasted sesame oil "tofu mayonnaise", then tossed with crisp and flavorful pungent pieces of fresh ginger, and crunchy slivers of calcium rich almonds.

Wholly Macro cannot be responsible for trace amounts of common food allergens that come from outside (packaged  or bulk items), and therefore end up occurring within our prepared foods. Please use your own discretion in determining if our food is appropriate for your consumption, especially if you have severe food allergies.

 

We are always available to clarify any of the ingredients that we use, and assist you in your weekly selections, but we cannot keep track of your food allergies, sensitivities, likes, dislikes or preferences.
