ABOUT THIS WEEKS MENU ~ WEEKLY ARTICLE Seasonal Super Foods - Autumn Edition There are just too many super foods on this week's menu to not give each and every one of them the attention that they deserve. If you eat them, they will work for you, behind the scenes, boosting your immune system, and infusing your body with mega-doses of disease preventing nutrients. And let's face it, prevention is key! Especially right about now! Because it is November. Cold and flu "season". And interestingly enough, in oriental medicine, autumn is associated with the lungs. |
Which means, that our lungs are particularly vulnerable during this season, and that we must do all that we can to protect them.
Our lungs need and deserve extra attention during autumn.
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, drug makers will produce nearly 140 million doses of flu vaccine this year.
And yes, we suppose that this is one way to "prevent" disease from occurring. Their way. But boosting your immune system with flu (and other) disease fighting foods is an additional option.
And that is OUR way.
You should get the flu vaccine if you want to, by all means. But, at the same time, you should improve your diet and lifestyle as well.
We are going to present you with just some of the seasonally supportive super foods contained within this weeks Wholly Macro Delivery Menu.
As you read through the menu, you will find them contained within each and every one of this week's dishes.
And of course they, and more, will be on subsequent menus as well.

Beans : These nutritious legumes are rich in protein and minerals. One mineral in particular, zinc, is found in abundance in beans. Zinc is an important trace mineral that keeps your immune system in good working order. Another food that is high in zinc are pumpkin seeds, and sea vegetables such as wakame and kombu contain a wide variety of just about every naturally occurring vital and essential mineral known to humankind.
Carrots: Carrots are rich in beta-carotene. Our bodies use beta-carotene to ward off respiratory infections. Other excellent sources of beta-carotene are dark green vegetables such as kale and collard greens, and yellow - orange winter squashes such as kabocha and spaghetti squash.
Mushrooms: Mushrooms heighten the body's resistance to viral infections by increasing the activity of "killer cells", which are a natural and very important part of our white blood cells defense system against viral invasion. Killer cells are a vital part of the immune system. Mushrooms such as shiitake and maitake are widely renowned for their ability to subdue viral activity and boost the immune system, but cremini and portabella mushrooms are immune system boosting nutritional powerhouses as well.

Nuts: Delicious and popular, nuts are a rich source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps our bodies ward off viral infections by infusing our cells with viruses enemy #1: Oxygen!
Ginger: Ginger is warming and stimulating, boosting digestion and circulation. It's pungent characteristics increase circulation, and promote cleansing and detoxing via the skin and bowels, two other very important organs related to the autumn season and lung health. Ginger is a very important part of the kitchen arsenal, effectively preventing and easing congestion in the throat and lungs, and relieving symptoms of cold and flu via it's natural anti-bacterial properties.

Burdock Root: Burdock is a powerful root vegetable that cleanses, purifies, restores, and strengthens the blood, while also supporting digestion and eliminating toxins. Burdock has long appeared in European and Asian remedial formulas as a powerful anti-carcinogen because of it's tremendous immune system supporting properties, making it both a seasonal and valuable fall food.
Probiotics: Probiotics, aka "the good bacteria", naturally occur within our body, but can be supplemented naturally via fermented foods such as miso, sauerkraut, tamari, olives, and umeboshi plums, foods that we use weekly within our Wholly Macro menus..Probiotics greatly strengthen our immune system. And although they should also naturally occur within our "guts", they are too often in peril within our bodies due to overuse of drugs such as antibiotics, overuse of anti-bacterial cleansers, and over use of simple table sugars in our diets. When the microbes in our body are disturbed, they can tip us into poor health and / or outright illness. Science is just now starting to explore how to boost the growth of healthy gut bacteria, using probiotic supplements, and foods that fuel healthy bugs, while simultaneously zapping the bad ones. We are all over this one here at Wholly Macro with our prolific use of probiotic rich fermented foods!
So as you can see, this weeks Wholly Macro Delivery Menu, and all of our Weekly Delivery Menu's, contain a plethora of healing super foods.
And as promised, we tweak the menu's year round to make sure that they remain seasonal. That is, to make sure that we use the right foods, during the right season, to maximize the exact benefits that each seasons harvest provides for just the right corresponding organ within our body.
