SMASH AND GRAB

  

It's not what you think!!

 

When we say "Smash And Grab", we mean it in a good way, because what we are referring to is smashing and then pan - frying our Sesame ~ Umeboshi Green Nori Rice Balls, before you grab them!

 

While it is easy enough to simply eat our delicious and convenient rice balls as is, what we here at Wholly Macro really LOVE to do with them, is to pan fry them before eating. 

 

How To Fry A Rice Ball:

 

 

We do this by brushing a stainless steel or cast iron pan with regular un-toasted sesame oil, then slowly, on a medium flame, bringing it to a medium high temperature. We want it hot, but not smoking hot

 

Just to clarify: We want to be smoking hot, and we all are, aren't we (because we eat such healthy food, moon bathe, etc.) but we definitely don't want our cooking oil to be smoking hot!

 

Anyway, where were we?? Oh, right. Once the pan gets nice and hot, place a rice ball or two in the pan, and gently smash it so that it is a little flatter and more of it can make contact with the hot oil. Let it sizzle away. Let the sesame seeds snap, crackle, and pop as they heat up and get nice and crisp. Flip it, and repeat on the other side.

 

Then eat and enjoy!! 

 

 

Rice balls were invented to be a perfect travel food. They are compact, very nutrient dense and filling, and because they contain umeboshi plum, which acts a natural preservative due to it's pickled state, the rice balls can last for a long time, up to a week and beyond.

 

Here at Wholly Macro we always take rice balls with us when traveling, even if our travels are simply an afternoon or evening away from our kitchen.

 

But we love to take them on big trips too, because once we arrive at our destination and refrigerate the rice balls there is nothing as convenient and satisfying as a few smashed and fried rice balls to grab while on the go!

 

Please make sure though, that wherever you are, and however you enjoy your rice balls, that you do so in a civilized way. And by civilized, we mean that you can smash and fry your rice balls, grab them, and go, but you cannot eat them (or anything) on the go. 

 

How To Eat In A Civilized Way:

 

Please always be sure to sit down to your meal.

 

 

Look at your food and appreciate the life force that it contains and is about to transfer to you. This type of visual observation actually initiates digestion by stimulating the flow of gastric juices and digestive enzymes.

 

Eat slowly and breathe deeply while eating. Food combined with oxygen burns more calories than food without oxygen! (Think exercise, think live foods!)

 

Chew well. The rice balls are a real mouthful, so be sure to chew them thoroughly. 
 

You can eat the healthiest meal imaginable, but if you are not in a relaxed state while eating, your metabolism shuts down because your body perceives stress, and goes into fight or flight mode as it focuses on protection. Blood is actually routed away from the midsection of the body and towards the extremities in preparation for fight or flight. 

 

 

This is not a good scenario for your digestive organs!

 

In fact, if you eat a meal while stressed or on the go, you actually absorb up to 50% less nutrients from your food.

 

If you want to improve your digestion, metabolism, and state of health, pay attention not only to what you eat, but to how you eat it as well!

FIVE ONION MISO SOUP
SMALL___ LARGE___

No, not five onions, but five different kinds of onions, all blended together to create this naturally sweet, creamy, miso based soup. Onions, with their gentle and natural sweetness, are relaxing and nourishing to the stomach and pancreas. This soup uses red onion, yellow onion, green onion, leek, and shallot, blended with protein rich red lentils, and the classic miso soup fixtures; wakame sea vegetable for minerals, shiitake mushroom and irish moss for immune system stimulation and deep internal cleansing, and rich in abundant live enzymes yellow miso, pureed with calcium rich sesame tahini, garnished with bright green chives, and finished with a subtle burst of earthy herbs de Provence. Can also be eaten cool, like vichyssoise. 

SESAME UMEBOSHI NORI RICE BALLS

The best source of complex carbohydrates, power packed short grain and sweet brown rice are rolled into chewy and delicious rice "balls", that are spiked throughout with crunchy morsels of roasted ginger and fresh and flavorful green chives, stuffed with a piece of digestive and alkalizing umeboshi plum, and flecked with gently relaxing mineral rich green nori sea vegetable flakes which are rich in chlorophyll and antioxidents, then dipped in calcium and trace mineral rich toasted brown sesame seeds. A beautiful and appealing, fun, and very healthy way to consume brown rice at a meal or as a snack!
TOFU "EGG LESS" SALAD

A crisp and fresh, healthy version of "egg" salad, made with protein and calcium rich tofu, beta carotene rich lightly blanched carrots, alkalizing umeboshi pickled sweet red onions, enzyme rich pickled cucumbers, naturally diuretic celery slices, good for the lungs red radish, and a plethora of chlorophyll rich blood building  watercress, all tossed in a creamy tofu and umeboshi plum liver cleansing lemony mayonnaise like dressing.
BROWN RICE PENNE PASTA WITH PISTACHIO PESTO

Brown rice is the base of these lovely penne noodles that are tossed in a fragrant and low fat pesto made from mineral and essential fatty acid rich pistachio's and pumpkin seeds, blended with bright green bursting with chlorophyll and good for the liver fresh parsley, fresh basil, yellow miso, and highlighted with digestion stimulating and enzyme rich natural organic green olives.  
MASHED SWEET POTATO WITH MISO WALNUT CHUTNEY

Beta carotene rich energetically relaxing and soothing brilliant orange sweet potatoes are topped with a delicious chutney of omega rich essential fatty acid roasted walnuts, fresh and pungent circulation promoting ginger root, brown rice syrup, enzyme rich barley miso, and a garnish of fresh green chives, melding an amazing sweet and savory blend of organ and health enhancing flavors and colors.
S'MORE CAKE

Reminiscent of summer camp and campfires, this dessert is a take on those thick, rich, and gooey s'mores. The cake is a whole wheat pastry flour, natural vitamin E rich sunflower oil, and brown rice syrup batter that is spiked with coconut and almonds, then smothered with naturally caffeine free luscious carob caramel, and topped with high protein, calcium rich, low fat and cholesterol, totally satisfying tofu whip cr�me. Most foods used in the Wholly Macro kitchen are not packaged, but instead are bought in the produce section or in bulk. But as you know, cross contamination is always a possibility, especially with bulk items. And in the few packaged foods that we do use, such as nut butters for example, it is common to find warnings on the manufacturer label stating that the item was processed in a plant that handles tree nuts, soy, wheat, dairy, gluten, shellfish, and so on.  

 

Wholly Macro cannot be responsible for trace amounts of common food allergens that come from outside (packaged  or bulk items), and therefore end up occurring within our prepared foods. Please use your own discretion in determining if our food is appropriate for your consumption, especially if you have severe food allergies.

 

We are always available to clarify any of the ingredients that we use, and assist you in your weekly selections, but we cannot keep track of your food allergies, sensitivities, likes, dislikes or preferences.

Instruction is based on oriental medicine/macrobiotic principals. Start with a basic class  with soup, beans and grains or try a dessert class for a real treat!
