WEEKLY ARTICLE
The Food Purchases That You Make Today
Can Affect The Songbirds Of Tomorrow
Last week life was a beach, and this week it is October.
Fall is coming slowly slowly to South Florida, although it has already most certainly arrived to some of our reader's areas.
We are always talking about, "eating seasonally" here at Wholly Macro.
Usually when we speak of eating seasonally we relate it to the physical body, changing the type of food that we eat to facilitate our bodies to more easily acclimate to the next season.
|
For example: Many people eat watermelon all summer long. I think we can all agree that watermelon and summer go hand in hand. In fact, when we were in Greece and Turkey this past summer it was the staple food over there. And for good reason. It was very hot and very dry in that part of the world in the summer.
 | Wholly Macro Chef Jaime Parra Eating Watermelon In Venice Italy - Summer 2013 |
Watermelon, with its naturally cool and fluid like nature was the perfect food for rehydration and electrolyte rebalancing in that heat.
But as perfect as it is for hot summer weather, is as imperfect as it is for cooler and moister fall and winter weather.
|
There are many foods like this, specifically fresh produce, and especially fresh fruit, and products made from these items.
And our beautiful planet earth brilliantly grows the proper foods for the proper seasons.
When produce is "out of season", it simply should not be eaten, except in small amounts, or medicinally.
But in the modern world, especially in the United States, We want to be able to eat "watermelon" all year long.
And this poses a threat to the balance of nature and her many delicate and fragile inhabitants.
So beyond human sustenance, we must consider planetary sustenance as well, as we change the foods that we eat to accommodate the seasons.
Coincidentally, and beyond the physical health reasons, and in no way belittling them, I found the most heartwarming and informative article this week that may very well be among THE BEST of reasons to eat seasonally that I have yet to come across.

The article was called "Put A Songbird On Your Shopping List".
It explains, that the population of about one third of the 100 or so
species of migratory songbirds in existence today, most that breed in North America, has plummeted by 30 percent over the past 40 years. This, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Breeding Bird Survey.
The imported fruits and vegetables that many of us demand to buy year round are in no small way to blame.
In countries near and south of the equator, produce crops are heavily sprayed with dangerous chemicals that are banned all together for use in the United States because of their extreme toxicity.
And it takes a lot for the United States to ban a chemical!
But sadly, they are not banned in Latin and South America.
And their use has increased five fold since the 1980's, mainly because of the demand by people, shoppers, in the United States, for fresh (out of season) produce year round. And this demand comes at the expense of the migratory songbirds, and countless other birds, insects, and animals as well. Think Honey Bee's. (Another topic, another newsletter).
Songbirds, the article says, are highly susceptible to the toxic effects of chemicals used on their wintering grounds in Central and South America. A single application of a toxic pesticide can kill as many as 25 songbirds per acre.
So, if your Winter shopping list contains imported Spring and Summer produce, especially produce imported from Central and South America, you are NOT eating seasonally.

You are doing your own body
physical harm by eating out of
synch and out of season imported produce, and you are also harming innocent, lovely songbirds, "the birds and the bee's" so to speak. And not only that, but beyond the harm you do to yourself by eating out of season produce, IF said produce is not organic, YOU, not just the songbirds, will also be ingesting these very harmful chemicals.
|
A songbird's life is impacted by environmental changes on the same huge geographical scale that can affect our own lives. And, from faraway lands, they reveal environmental threats that we humans cannot even yet see unfolding.
Which is why the food purchases that you make today, can, and do, affect your own health, planetary health, and the health and presence of the songbirds of tomorrow from making their seasonal, colorful, and melodious appearance in your neck of the woods.
Fall and Winter are slow to arrive in South Florida, so you will still see some small amounts of more summery organic produce on our menu's here and there for a while as we transition, but for the most part, we pretty much "observe" and respect the wisdom of our great planet here at Wholly Macro, and only purchase that which is available seasonally, this season and throughout the entire year.
Enjoy the Peach Berry Cobbler that is appearing on this weeks Wholly Macro menu! It will for sure be the last of the summer peaches for the season.
May health, happiness, and prosperity be your unavoidable natural state and your ongoing daily experience.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor |
