                              Power Naps

 

It is now really truly summertime.

 

We are still uncurling from our little "staycation", and not that we napped so much, because we really truly did have a ton of "projects" to catch up on, but the idea of a nap did cross our minds in a most appealing way during our break. Our otherwise unused couch was calling our name! And wait a minute; I think we did manage maybe two naps during our two-week break. That equates to roughly one nap per week! Not too bad for napping novices!

 

Life is a little slower in the South Florida neck of the woods during the summer compared to the frenetic pace of the winter season down here. But of course the opposite is true for our friends and readers in other parts of the country. Your busier season is summer, and summer is a busy busy time in the colder climes as you finally get to be out and about.

 

But back to South Florida, long hot hot hot afternoons here in the sub-tropics are just perfect for a quick power nap or two.

 

And just what is a power nap, and how is it different than a plain old nap you may ask.

 

The ideal naptime is actually about twenty minutes long.

 

  

 

A twenty-minute mind rest, aka a power nap, boosts alertness, optimizes motor function, and increases general performance.

  

Taking a longer nap, say between thirty minutes to one hour, puts a napper into a slow-wave sleep pattern that can leave one feeling groggy and foggy upon awakening, which is NOT the desired outcome.

 

This is important, and works out quite well in fact, because catching a quick twenty-minute power nap is an attainable goal and does not require blocking out longer and less realistic periods of time for napping. Time that most of us don't have.

 

One of our favorite sayings here at Wholly Macro comes to mind right about now:

 

"More is not better".

 

Just because something is good for you, or feels good to you, does not mean that more of that something is better for you

A nap is a perfect example.

 

Keep your naps short and sweet.

 

Reboot just long enough to keep your brain functioning at its optimal level, knowing that you will recharge it fully when you go to sleep that night.

 

A recent six year study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health on naps found that taking a nap at least three times a week reduced coronary mortality by 37%. In other words, napping is good for your heart!!

 

The Harvard study also found that naps increase creativity and memory.

 

Many workplaces, and many individuals frown on napping. But more progressive workplaces actually designate power nap areas, recognizing their ultimate value to long-term employee productivity.

 

 

 

If only we were allowed to nap when I worked the twelve-hour night shift as a nurse. Now there is a perfect example of a non-progressive workplace in action!!! Being caught napping (even during break time) while on that job resulted in immediate grounds for dismissal. 

No one at that job was functioning at his or her best. One visionary CEO designating rotating power nap breaks could have made all of the difference in the world for employee productivity and performance!

 

Be that visionary CEO, of your OWN body.

 

Give yourself non-guilty permission to power nap a few times a week, and do your heart and soul some much needed good.

SHIITAKE MUSHROOM BARLEY MISO SOUP

A rich and creamy blend of high fiber whole grain barley and pearled barley cooked with mineral rich and digestive kombu sea vegetable, unique and interesting in flavor medicinal shiitake mushrooms, along with the more traditional cremini mushroom, and sweetly blanched carrot, celery, and yellow onion, in an enzyme rich and strengthening yellow miso, ginger, and wakame sea vegetable base, garnished with a sprinkle of fresh green scallions. 

BROWN BASMATI RICE PAELLA

 Perfectly suited for a warm climate medium grain brown rice is cooked with kombu sea vegetable to enhance it's mineral content, then tossed into a colorful paella with protein rich saut�ed morsels of tofu, fresh green peas, sunshine yellow corn kernels, red onions, trace mineral rich pumpkin seeds, red blood cell building parsley, and a splash of tangy, alkalizing, and digestive umeboshi plum vinegar.
 RED LENTIL AND SUNFLOWER SEED PATE

In this dish, red lentils are saut�ed with good for the spleen and pancreas naturally sweet yellow onions. This mixture is blended into a pate with omega three rich roasted sunflower seeds that are packed with enough power to be able to grow a beautiful sunflower (imagine what all of that energy can do for your body!!). Fresh basil and naturally fermented live enzyme rich green olives are added for a little spunk, forming a flavorful and nutritious healthy, fun, elegant, and satisfying high protein bean pate.
 PENNE PASTA PRIMAVERA

Brown rice penne pasta, such fun to look at and to eat, and healthy too, are tossed with uniquely flavorful and immune system strengthening shiitake mushrooms, cremini mushrooms, high mineral beautifully chlorophyll rich and green fresh broccoli, fresh and juicy bright yellow squash, naturally sweet beta carotene rich carrots, lots of chlorophyll rich fresh parsley, and an organic caper garnish, for a perfect, warm or cool, light and flavorful anytime pasta dish.

FUSION "PRESSED" SALAD WITH SESAME TAHINI

Naturally sweet and light, this Asian inspired fresh vegetable salad is "pressed", to naturally marinate the vegetables making them easy to digest and assimilate. Made with high mineral, shredded red, green, and chinese cabbage, beta carotene rich julienne carrots, bitter green heart healthy arugula, calcium and mineral rich great for the liver kale, and a lovely tahini marinade of omega three and trace mineral rich ground sesame seeds, liver cleansing lemon juice, and alkalizing and digestive umeboshi plums.

Most foods used in the Wholly Macro kitchen are not packaged, but instead are bought in the produce section or in bulk. But as you know, cross contamination is always a possibility, especially with bulk items. And in the few packaged foods that we do use, such as nut butters for example, it is common to find warnings on the manufacturer label stating that the item was processed in a plant that handles tree nuts, soy, wheat, dairy, gluten, shellfish, and so on.  

 

Wholly Macro cannot be responsible for trace amounts of common food allergens that come from outside (packaged  or bulk items), and therefore end up occurring within our prepared foods. Please use your own discretion in determining if our food is appropriate for your consumption, especially if you have severe food allergies.

 

We are always available to clarify any of the ingredients that we use, and assist you in your weekly selections, but we cannot keep track of your food allergies, sensitivities, likes, dislikes or preferences.
