 WEEKLY ARTICLE:  Be The Tree

" Praise and blame,

Gain and loss,

Pleasure and sorrow,

Come and go like the wind.

To be happy,

Rest like a great tree

In the midst of them all."

Buddha

As I was writing about the liver last week the phrase "Be The Tree" kept popping into my head.

Why?

Because the spring season, the season related to the liver / gallbladder, is often referred to as "tree" or "wood" in oriental medicine.

Signifying new growth and light, fresh, upward energy.

The liver and gall bladder meridians run along the legs and sides of the body.

The liver meridian starts at the inner edge of the big toenail, runs up, along the top of the foot between the first and second toe, then up the inside of the calf and thigh, across the groin, onto the outer edge of the torso, and ends under the rib cage.

Liver Meridian

The gall bladder meridian starts at the outer corner of the eye, runs over the top of the ear, and then zigzags across the side of the head, onto the neck and shoulders, then down the entire side of the body, the torso, hips, outside of the thighs and calves, and along the top of the foot ending at the fourth toenail.

So when I think of the phrase Be The Tree, I think of a few very simple yet powerful "exercises" that relate to Spring / Tree energy.

Visualize energy flowing through the entire complimentary length of these two powerful meridians as you do the following exercises, and focus on a vibrant oxygen cleansing houseplant or fresh cut organic flowers as you think spring.

Find your way outside onto a patch of real grass, if possible under a wise, silent, and peaceful tree. Close your eyes and press your feet into the ground. Connect with the earth as if you are growing roots, and

Be The Tree.

The first exercise is called The Tree. Ha Ha.  For Real!
It is a yoga asana.

Annette in Tree Pose

With bare feet, firmly root one foot on the ground. Use your toes to dig in to the surface beneath your foot, and use your foot muscles to help secure the foot and leg.

Lift the other leg off of the ground just slightly while focusing your eyes on a fixed point in front of you.

When you feel you have your balance, continue to lift the leg until you can rest the foot against whatever height along the inside of the opposite leg feels comfortable to you.

The gallbladder is often associated with stress and migraine headaches because of its meridian location on the head, neck and shoulders. Bottled up energy along this meridian gets stuck in these areas and can manifest as a headache.

So whatever you do, do not think too much as you do this pose.

In fact, you must empty your mind completely in order to even be able to do this seemingly simple pose.

Ah, what blessed relief for our poor aching heads and brains!

Now breathe deeply as you raise your arms above your head, feeling the stretch along the entire length of your body as you open up your liver and gallbladder meridians.

Practicing The Tree brings a wonderful feeling of inner peace and is excellent for balance too. Both literally and figuratively.

If you feel balanced enough while in the tree pose you can use the toes of the raised foot to massage along the liver meridians of the inner calf and thigh of the rooted leg as you rest like a great tree in the midst of this pose.

The second exercise is called Swaying Tree and is part of a Tai Chi routine.

Sulam Chi with Levi Ben-Shmuel: The Spinal Twist
Swaying Tree Variation

Tai Chi is known for it's subtle benefits to the tendons and ligaments, the very tendons and ligaments that are ruled by the liver. Yes, tendon and ligament problems manifest from liver imbalance.

To do The Swaying Tree stand naturally, feet comfortably apart. Take a deep breath. As you exhale, relax and sink slightly, bending the knees. Start twisting from side to side.

The body's rotation will naturally cause your relaxed arms to follow your body.

So as you begin this movement, let your wrists spring lightly against your outer thighs, hips, and torso / ribcage, stimulating the liver and gall bladder meridians. Increase your arm reach as you increase your swaying, and let your wrists spring lightly against the kidney area of your back, just above and below your waist, stimulating and strengthening them.

This movement may seem easy, but the benefits are big. The twisting motion causes energy to spiral from the ground up into your body.

As a tree grows.

The lateral movement strengthens the body's rotator muscles while at the same time this type of general movement increases the range of motion of your tendons and ligaments, while also reducing residual muscle tension.

Tension along the liver and gallbladder meridians often causes hip, torso, and ribcage tightness, pain, and restricted movement.

Visualize the tightness along these pathways melting away as you breathe deeply and relax into The Swaying Tree.

And as you take the time to call on Mother Nature to nourish and revive you amidst the stressors of your busy lives, please also take a few moments to check out the lovely menu that we have for you this week. It is just below.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
