WEEKLY ARTICLE
Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll,
and Metastatic Breast Cancer
I was speaking to a food delivery client of ours a few days ago. She has been undergoing cancer treatment, and is experiencing many of the emotional and physical changes that are inevitably a part of that particular package.
One of her experiences made me think of a similar experience that I had had, so I decided to share my experience with her.
It came as a surprise to both of us that she has had no idea these past several months that I also had cancer, albeit many years ago.
In that moment, I realized that cancer is not my main identity anymore.
It used to be. Years ago, it was so prominent in my life that everyone knew. But through this conversation with the above client I realized that cancer no longer identifies me - YAY!!
Yet, as my client and my conversation came to a close, she thanked me for sharing my "happy" story with her, and I realized that my story is a happy one. It is just amazing in fact, at least to me.
My cancer story is available within our website, but of course you have to first go to the website, and then click around to find it. Obviously, as per the above-mentioned client, not everyone does that. Understandably.
|
So I decided it would be worth reprinting both a short and full a copy of it here, within this newsletter.
As a prologue, I must mention that every time I tell any part of my cancer story, one of the most frequently asked questions that I receive is: Do you think that the way you eat, (aka macrobiotics), made a difference in your recovery?
I have to say that YES, I absolutely do think that it did / does.
In 1996, medically, taking all known and available treatment into account, I was given six months to one year to live.
The only variable, my wild card if you will, was the macrobiotic diet, macrobiotic lifestyle, and macrobiotic community of wonderful, knowledgeable, and supportive people.
You do the math!
No matter what year you are reading this, it is impressive, and a tribute to the power of pure natural living, through both diet and lifestyle, to heal the body.
You can call it anything you want to. I call it macrobiotics, an all-encompassing term compartmentalizing food (and lifestyle) into scientific principles based on Oriental Medicinal principles.
Call it anything that YOU need to. But please, make the changes necessary to heal your life!
I am including a very brief synapsis of my entire cancer story, as summarized by Phiya Kushi and used for his blog "Macrobiotic Adventures, Celebrating Life One Story At A Time, Conference Calls, Interviews and Lectures". For more stories click here.
I have included my entire story following the synapsis for those of you who would like to read it in full detail.
I hope that it reaches out and inspires you or someone you know.

Short Synapsis Of Gayle's Cancer Story:
 |
Gayle July 1996 During Cancer Treatment
|
Gayle Stolove discovered a prominent lump in the upper and outer portion of her left breast in 1994 and didn't have it checked. She was 34 years old. Her grandmother died of breast cancer at a young age so when she first felt the lump she knew what it was. Consumed by fear, she so desperately wanted for it not to be cancer and subsequently lived in denial for two years. Finally, by July of 1996, when she could no longer face seeing the skin around the lump on her breast start to pucker and wrinkle anymore, she went to see a surgeon.
Right away the surgeon announced that she had "very advanced breast cancer", and recommended immediate bilateral mastectomy. The tumor was so large and the skin changes so obvious that he did not need to confirm what he saw in order to know what needed to be done. A biopsy later verified his diagnosis. Gayle walked out of that Doctors office terrified yet on her way to becoming a changed woman. |
Instead of the recommended double-mastectomy Gayle opted for a lumpectomy and axillary lymph node dissection in order to spare her breast. The surgery revealed that the cancer had spread to 12 axillary lymph nodes, which resulted in the grim prognosis that she had only six months to one year to live, and that she needed a stem cell transplant immediately. She chose not to have the stem cell transplant and instead underwent nine months of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiation, and a short duration of Tamoxifen. The doctors insisted she take it for five full years, but due to Michio Kushi (her famed Macrobiotic teacher's) insistence to stop taking it, she took it for only two.
During this time Gayle also fully embraced the macrobiotic approach. In the past she had met two individuals who healed their cancers with macrobiotics. She made a mental note that if she ever got cancer she would do the same and so, on the day of her cancer diagnosis, she committed to follow macrobiotics. Gayle switched to eating whole and natural foods and it changed her completely. Her mind became clearer, her body began to heal, and everyone said she looked "great".

October 1997 Post Cancer Treatment
|
Currently, she is totally cancer free and on no medications at all. While not quite perfect yet, Gayle has never felt better in her life, both physically and emotionally. She still, and always will, embrace the macrobiotic diet and lifestyle.

Below is the the longer version of my history with cancer:
Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll, and Metastatic Breast Cancer ~ A Testimonial To Macrobiotics
It is hard to say when it all started. I was a relatively healthy child, I think. I was active. I was slim. I had a wonderful wonderful grandfather who was a vegetable farmer, and grandmother who was an old-fashioned European style cook. That meant a lot of fresh vegetables (that were most likely loaded with pesticides), and delicious freshly prepared homemade foods that were loaded with eggs, sugar, dairy, and animal fat.
I had a wonderful father who was a brilliant medical doctor. But what that meant, was that antibiotics were readily available, and they were given at the drop of a hat. For all of the common childhood ailments. And I got them all! It was a viscous cycle: Ailment, antibiotics. Ailment, antibiotics. There went my natural immune system! I was even on antibiotics for acne!
By the time I was thirteen years old, at the onset of my first menstrual cycle, I developed a cyst on one of my developing breasts. It was large, painful, and draining. My father, and the family doctor were at a loss. They put me on antibiotics. Eventually it cleared up. Around this same time, my grandmother, the European cook, died a long, drawn out, horrible death from breast cancer. Watching my father and his colleagues unable to save her, was as painful as watching her die. That was my first memory of cancer. I was very young when my grandmother died, but her love of cooking was already deeply ingrained in me. (No pun intended!). I loved being in the kitchen with her.
Life got pretty wild after that. The teenage years. I got very caught up in the sixties and seventies. I practiced yoga. I became a vegetarian. Which simply meant that I no longer ate meat. But I still ate plenty of sugar and dairy! And I experimented with many recreational drugs while partaking in the free love ~ free sex movement as well. It was fun, and I was young and crazy. And indestructible, or so I thought.
During college, one of my friends got breast cancer. the rest of the story.....

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor |
