 WEEKLY NEWS

Wholly Macro will be closing for two weeks.

We will be closed March 6 and March 13, 2013.

We will re-open the week of March 20, 2013 and will send that menu out on March 16, 2013.

If you need to reach us during that time, or need anything at all, please contact our assistant Annette at 954 214-5403.

She will be happy to help you.

We will repeat this announcement each week until we close.

As always, and especially for anyone new to the Wholly Macro Delivery world, we encourage you to order extra food to freeze for use while we are closed. All of our menus are surprisingly freezer friendly, and are just perfect for ordering extra food from to freeze.

If you want to read all about how to best freeze (and thaw) your Wholly Macro food, when freezing is recommended and when it isn't, how to make our schedule work for you, and many other interesting and helpful details about freezing the Wholly Macro food / dealing successfully with Wholly Macro's closure, please click here for full details.

We are giving you Two Weeks advance notice about our upcoming closure to allow plenty of time for you to stock up on a variety of items from our Weekly Delivery Service Menus, including this one.

We hope you will take us up on our offer, take us up on the advice provided in the link above (because it works!!), and use the next two menus / weeks / and time wisely.

If you would like to read a (true) story about how Gayle ordered food for herself and used the freeze in advance method very successfully recently while Jaime was out of town, please click here.

We won't be going out of town during this closure. We are closing to do some much needed renovating, reorganizing, and revamping of the Wholly Macro kitchen and pantry. There are a few rather large projects we need to work on in order to continue accommodating our extensive collection of food, pots, pans, equipment, and clientele, and we thank-you so much for bearing with us while we do so.

We really will be back in a flash!

WEEKLY ARTICLE

                                       Walk On

So many of you have been so kind and so concerned about my knees ever since I mentioned that I had injured them a few weeks ago. Thank-you so much for your concern. It is GREATLY appreciated. And so funny, because I actually wrote the article that week to emphasize the dangers of prolonged sitting, and somehow it became all about my knees!

They are so much better by the way. Not 100% yet, but I think they will be.

This knee experience has been a huge wake-up call / lesson for me in several ways that I would like to share with you.

Lesson #1. Stretch more!! Stretching is essential to a balanced fitness program. No amount of cardio, strength training, or weight lifting can ever take the place of stretching.

Lesson #2. Vary your exercise routine. Do not get locked into one exercise only. Find a few that work for you and alternate them.

Lesson #3. Do not loose ground!! And it does slip away if not constantly monitored! When I was younger I would watch older people who could no longer sit on the floor and I vowed that that would never be me. But with my knee injury I found myself in that same boat.

I mourned my loss of body function deeply. I am a drama queen, so I saw myself as an old woman, no longer able to soar around the neighborhood on her bicycle, no longer able to walk down to the beach and swim in her beloved ocean, etc.

It was a terrible feeling. I don't want to have that feeling as I get older! I do not want that to be me.

I have a picture of my beloved yoga teacher on my dresser, and she is sitting on the floor in the lotus posture, playing a crystal bowl, at age 80 something. She did yoga all of her life, consistently, every single day, and was able to continue doing it, including standing on her head, right up until the time of her death.

She lost no ground!

With her photo and memory in mind, I am slowly working my way back to where I was pre-injury.

One of the biggest challenges I have had for the past month has been how to continue exercising without stressing my knees. I not only don't want lose any ground, but would actually like to regain some of the ground that I had lost even before my injury.

See: The injury woke me up to the fact that I had steadily

been losing ground. I was not stretching enough, and I was not varying my exercise routine. I was locked into the bike these past several months.

Now I stretch once or twice a day, and I walk. I am slowly working back up to the bike, and in the summer I will be back in the ocean swimming as well.

I think I mentioned before that I am loving, loving, loving the walking.

And I have found several absolutely fascinating benefits of walking that I would like to share with you.

Just Move. Walking can be easy going or intense. Start slowly. Work up to longer walks and faster paces if you like, but the benefit of simply moving is tremendous no matter what the pace. The CDC (Center For Disease Control) recommends investing in a weekly total of either 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise. That breaks down to a mere 20-30 minutes of exercise total, a day, and you can even divide that into two 10-15 minute sessions per day rather than one 20 - 30 minute session. We can ALL handle that, can't we? Research shows that the majority of health benefits are derived within the first 20 minutes of exercise anyway, and begin to flatten out after 30 minutes!

Psych Yourself Out. Tighten your abdominal muscles while walking to stimulate feel good brain chemicals to release, enhancing the feelings of a good mood. Dropout rates for intense workout programs are very high. On the other hand, creating an enjoyable and manageable daily walking routine builds self-esteem and reduces anxiety.

Conquer Aches, Pains, and Injuries. Stretch out your stride while you walk. Hold your posture erect. Keep your shoulders down and back. Keep your upper body movement fluid. Let your arms swing. Tighten your abs, and strengthen your core. The demands of an intense workout can lead to joint and muscle pain, injury, and rather expensive (think health clubs) discouragement. Keep it simple by embracing the above walking techniques to maximize the benefits of simply walking. IF you do plan to weight lift or do any other type of more complicated exercise, by all means seek the guidance of a professional.

Build Muscle. If you incorporate the above walking form you will build muscle as you walk, even if your stroll leisurely. Walking builds, tones, and shapes muscles in your legs and butt, and if you tighten your abs, you will rather effortlessly strengthen your core as well. And when you swing your arms it creates muscle tone in them too. You can even work up to carrying light (or heavy) weights while you walk.

LOOSE Weight!! Not everyone wants to or needs to of course, but so many of us do. Walking, or other longer duration - lower intensity forms of exercise can actually burn more fat than a shorter more intense workout does! This was a real eye opener for me. I bicycled fast and furious in an effort to up the ante of my workout. Only to come to find out now that the only thing I upped was the wear and tear on my knees!

Live Longer, Healthier.
Walking improves cardiovascular health. It reduces the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. And if you already have heart disease, it is a safe way to improve your cardiovascular system. A recently completed study in the Archives of Internal Medicine followed more than 18,000 middle-aged men and women for 26 years and found that those who stayed fit had a much lower rate of heart disease, kidney disease, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. In fact, the research shows that the combination of sitting more and being less physically active is associated with a significant increase in accelerated death rates, by as much as 94% for women and 48% for men. The findings suggested that fit people are able to enjoy a healthier life, longer.

Enhance Your Brain. The human body was just not meant to be sedentary! Exercise increases blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Research shows that even moderate activity improves brain function by increasing brain neuron growth, thereby improving memory skills. When exercise is suddenly halted the results are dramatic. In just one week, the brain health and memory benefits of exercise decline. And after 10 weeks of physical inactivity the brain activity is indistinguishable from sedentary, pre-exercise, unenhanced levels. Ugh!

Stabilize Your Blood Sugar. This is one of my favorites, and super important. Walking stabilizes blood sugar levels. It makes you LESS insulin resistant. The mere act of simply standing up contracts the big muscles in your back and legs, and those muscles release enzymes that stabilize blood sugar. Intense workouts can actually create uncomfortable and potentially dangerous blood sugar plunges, while gentle and enjoyable walking promotes blood sugar stabilization.

So: For a self-confidence boosting, money saving, head turning, brain enhancing, and blood sugar stabilizing workout, Walk On.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client.....

" three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer.  I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was  an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened,  I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle  guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all.  You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel.  You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....."     a cancer survivor
