WEEKLY ARTICLE: Do Re ME
"What lies behind us
And what lies before us
Are tiny matters
Compared to
What lies within us."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson |
Regardless of the words, or the melody, singing is a way to open the passageways between what is growing within and what is growing without.
When a song is in your heart, your soul becomes closer to its time in the world.
It is important that we tend to and care for the spirit within us, and singing is a way to draw the soul within closer to the world without.

It is essential that we care for our unique spirit deep within as a carrier of our life force to the surface of outer existence.
It is in this way, that singing is healing. |
When I do a consultation, I always advise my clients to sing, just as I was advised to do many years ago when initially pursuing my own healing path.
But what do we sing?? How do we just burst forth in song? Do we do it formally, or do we do it spontaneously?
How does one begin?
We think it is time for a Wholly Macro True Short Story!!
In July of 1996, when I became ill with breast cancer, I sought medical guidance. But I also knew that if I was going to survive, I needed to heal on a much deeper level than what the medical community could offer.
Integral to my healing path was macrobiotics. And in my beginning practice of macrobiotics, I was strongly advised to sing.
Singing felt incongruous with illness.
I think that was the point. |
For you see, when you sing, you can't really focus on anything else!! You must absolutely drop the replaying of your wounds, both physical and emotional, in order to be able to sing.
But back then, I was too bound up in my misery to even fathom singing. Perhaps many of you were / are too? Back in 1996, I had never really sung. I had pretty much no awareness of song. I was not joyful. And I could not think of one song to sing.
So I didn't sing.
But I did change my diet. And I did change my lifestyle. And my mind began to change as a result.
In December of that same year, while home healing, The Sound Of Music came on TV (as it does every year around holiday time).

As I watched the joyousness that singing brought to that movie, something inside me began to stir.
I had the feeling and desire to sing. |
I was healing. My body was becoming less bound by pain and suffering, and my spirit was rising forth to be free. To be heard. And to escape illness.
I went to the beach, took a walk along the shore, and began to sing Do Re Mi. You know. From The Sound Of Music. A happy song, and the absolute only one I could think of to actually sing out loud.
It was a little embarrassing, and it felt very strange at first.
But as I sang, I felt the life within me grow into and inside of the song.
It was liberating. It was freeing. It was fun. I began laughing as I sang. In part at myself, and my inability to carry a tune, and in part because the act of singing was so much fun that it made me feel happy, and that made me laugh with joy! Singing was good for my heart!
I had to fill my lungs with fresh oxygen in order to sing. I realized that singing was a great form of breath therapy. It opened my throat chakra. Singing was good for my lungs! I traded the sorrow in my lungs for joy in my heart! |
And in overcoming my fear and anxiety about singing, and about life in general, (or possible impending lack of life), and as I became stronger and braver about belting out an out of tune "tune", I realized that my kidneys were getting stronger. In oriental medicine, fear is related to weak kidneys.
Singing was therefore, good for my kidneys!!
When singing, I was free from worry and anxiety.
It was great ME time!! Do Re MEEE time.
Worry and anxiety are related to imbalance in the spleen and pancreas. Singing, it turns out, is a great mind distraction. So, you guessed it: Singing was good for my spleen (think white blood cells / immune system), and pancreas!
Now song is always within me. And without.
I know that I am out of balance when I don't have some tune or another floating around inside my heart and head, and on my lips.
When I have to really concentrate I literally have to tell myself: NO singing until the "job" is done!!
My choice of song has evolved, as my overall health as evolved. Now I find myself singing uplifting enlightening songs, simply chanting the word OM, or singing mantras such as the Gayatri Mantra, one of my favorites.
| Gayatri Mantra Meditation (Deva Premal) |
So: That is it. That is how you burst forth with song. It doesn't have to be formal. And it doesn't have to be public. It just has to be fun, and it just has to be done. In any way that you feel comfortable, (or uncomfortable at first). |
As your health improves, and your body becomes more balanced, comfort will follow.
So please consider adding singing to your daily, healthy to do list.
It will be good for your body, heart, mind, and soul, the same as it was / is for mine.
I love the idea of singing while exercising. It is a super positive form of multitasking. I sing when I clean. I sing when I cook. I sing when I am feeling stressed. But my favorite remains: Singing, (and deep breathing), while walking on the beach!
In The Best Of Health To You As Always.

Here's some feedback from a consultation client..... " three years ago I discovered that I had breast cancer. I had heard of Macrobiotics years ago. I didn't understand the concept but immediately I knew that that would be the route that I would pursue. But where to go and who to see was the question. Thank God for reading the macrobiotic newsletter. For in the newsletter there was an article about Gayle Stolove. I just felt her strength and passion burn through the page that I was reading. I immediately made an appointment to see her and although I was still so frightened, I felt so comfortable talking with Gayle. Gayle guided me through the whole process. I thought that the macrobiotic way of life would be boring and just eating rice. Well, I love the foods that I eat and I just feel good about it all. You see, after the surgery, you are sort of left on your own.You have to make your own decisions, etc. Everyone gives you different advice as what to eat, what to do, etc. Doctors don't understand what the patient is going through nor do they understand what kind of diet they should follow. I adopted Gayle as my guardian angel. You can't find that with any nutritionist or doctor. I love receiving her weekly e-mailed newsletters. They are so full of wonderful knowledge and beautiful healthy recipes. Gayle is a remarkable human being. She truly cares for her clients and gives them her all, one hundred percent of the time. Gayle has been there and therefore she is so compassionate and dedicates her life to helping people like me....." a cancer survivor |
