New National Partners

We are pleased to add three new AoP Partners from Indiana, Texas, and Wisconsin.  The AoP has received three new letters of partnership from the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, from the Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas, and the Green Lake Conference Center on Green Lake in Wisconsin.  This brings us to 117 Founding and National Partners.

"To thy own self be true"
  Preaching with Authenticity

By Trayce Stewart AoP '11

One of Shakespeare's most famous quotes comes from the character Polonius in Hamlet.  He says "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." While I have never been a huge fan of this tragedy, I can say that these words constantly ring in my head every time I stand to preach the gospel of Christ.  Read More>

Special:  In July, Trayce was awarded the 2013 Fred Craddock Award for Excellence in Preaching.  The Craddock Award is given in partnership by Disciples of Christ Historical Society and the Craddock Center.

 AoP Board of Directors Meet

July 12 and 13 proved to be a very energizing and enthusiastic weekend for the AoP Board of Directors.  Earnest Brooks, Dwight Moody, Christoper Gay, Robin Thomerson, John Williams, Julie Roe, and Martin Linebach, along with Russ White, a board certified master of governance were present.  David Emery, also a member of the Board of Directors was absent as he is in his final month of his sabatical, traveling through Italy.

The conversations were lively and covered some important aspects of maintaining and insuring the continued success of the AoP.  Among the topics discussed: risk assessment and creating clearly defined examples of global ends policies; finances and development; board organization and future AoP events.

The group engaged in a few beautiful meals and attended the Louisville RiverBats baseball game, followed with a mesmerizing display of fireworks.

The AoP asks that you keep the Board of Directors in your prayers as they continue to provide essential guidance and strategic initiatives towards the growing efforts and responsibility of the Academy of Preachers.

If you have any thoughts about the topics discussed please email your responses to info@academyofpreaches.net.

Dwight A. Moody, Executive Director
On Wisconsin!
By Dwight A. Moody

Last week I traveled to Wisconsin, at the Green Lake Conference Center. That put me northeast of Madison and due west of Milwaukee.  It is a short drive east to Oshkosh, home to the university where our Director of Assessments and Research Dr. Lori Carrell lives and teaches.

On Wednesday, Dr;. Carroll and I met with the Conference Center Executive Director Ben Mott. He became a National Partner and is interested in hosting AoP events. We talked extensively about his wonderful center, and then Dr. Carroll and I talked at length about the five-year assessment tool she is designing for use next spring. We will be sending this assessment piece to every person who has preached at any of our five National Festivals of Young Preachers (2010, 2011 and 2012 in Louisville, 2013 in Atlanta, and 2014 in Indianapolis).

Following this trip I will travel  to Washington DC to talk to donors, partners, and young preachers. From there I will go to Indianapolis for a weekend of preparation for the 2014 National Festival of Young Preachers. With me will be my associate Wyndee Holbrook and at least four of our Gospel Catalysts.

In September I will attend a week-long seminar on Creating Congregational Cultures of Generosity, hosted by St. Meinrad Seminary and led by professionals from the Lilly School of Philanthropy at the University of Indiana. Then comes Atlanta, New York, Boston, St. Louis, and Birmingham. I am  also looking forward to my visit  to Springfield, Missouri for a family wedding (and a visit to the Assembly of God Seminary).

In all of these places we are speaking with donors, solidifying ties with partners (or recruiting new partners), planning festivals, and meeting with young preachers. And in all of these places, if the past is any guide, I will run into unbounded enthusiasm for the mission and work of the Academy of Preachers.

It was five years ago that I began these travels, to Nashville, Evansville, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis, places within a 150 radius of our home base Louisville. We will celebrate these five years of success at the 2014 National Festival of Young Preachers in Indianapolis. I hope you can join us there for another amazing three days of inspiration and transformation.

Also, please feel free to visit the website and read Dr. Moody's five part series on Roman Catholics and Preaching.

Baptists Beam Over Young Preachers

By Wyndee Holbrook

The afternoon began simply enough, with a warm welcome and introductions, but soon there was evidence of power and pathos as one Young Preacher after another proclaimed answers to their "Questions of the Soul."

In the course of three hours, six Young Preachers held forth to 150 of their fellow Cooperative Baptists during the June 28 workshop hours of the CBF General Assembly gathered in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Though the Academy of Preachers is thoroughly trans-denominational, this event proudly celebrated the gifts of the Young Preachers associated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

The large and enthusiastic crowd embraced the event and the preaching, notably pleased by the prayerful preparation of the Young Preachers and their musical contemporaries.

Featured were Kelsey Stilwell Krebs AoP '13, Joshua Barrett, AoP '13, John Jay Alvaro, AoP '10, Scott Claybrook, AoP '10, Molly Shoulta AoP '12, and Luke Moody.
