One thought from last week has stayed with me and become a part of conversations over the past week. All of the seven major world religions have multiple celebrations this time of the year, 29 in all over 10 weeks, and many of them relate to the fading and return of the light. There seems to be something within us, something universal, that longs for the return of the light. We have just finished Hanukkah, Sunday will light the last candle on the Advent wreath, candle light vigils for Riverside and other victims of gun violence are everywhere, driving neighborhood streets is a special treat as houses are decorated with lights. Even as we move away from real wood fires that spew particulates into the air, we still try to replicate the fireplace and the warmth of camp fire. It's a wonderful time of the year. This seems to be an appropriate message for the League. While our candle are more often symbolic than actual, casting light on difficult situations is our mission; helping both voters and elected leaders make informed decisions. We have an open invitation to all to join us and add your one candle to the light. To carry the metaphor forward, you missed a wonderful evening and enlightening discussion last Friday evening at our Holiday event. Because we did not have a great crowd, we could actually have an old fashioned "fireside chat" with Senator Allen. He shared much good information about both election day and campaign finance reforms, issues the League will be working with him on during the coming legislative session. Have you considered a gift of a League membership, maybe for a young person just turned eighteen or someone retiring and ready to give of their time to the community? League calendar is quite for the rest of the year. Let your light shine where ever you are.
