Money in Politics, aka Campaign Finance issues, is a long standing concern of Leagues across the nation.  We are currently updating our positions on these issues. The results of this study will be reflected in our national positions on Campaign Finance.  More information can be found here and below.

Another issue that involves money, but not by the shovel full.  There are over thirty (30) of you who have not yet renewed your membership.  All renewals were due on September 31 and we have been carrying you, even allowing you to participate in consensus meetings.

Renewal is easy, Either use the form that was mailed to you in early September or just click on the "Join Us" button to the left. If you have no changes to your contact information, we only need your name to associate it with a renewal.
President's Corner
Money in politics - it's been a contentious issue probably as long as we've been a democracy. In 1974, the LWVUS adopted a position that focused on the financing of campaigns as it related to undue influence, equity among candidates and protection of the public's right to know.

Since then, a series of U.S. Supreme Court decisions culminating in the Citizens United decision extended the Court's views on free speech to allow unlimited spending by corporations and unions in candidate elections.

So we now have to address the relationship between money and free speech in our election system - that's why we're inviting you to a consensus meeting on an update to the League's national Money In Politics position.

An updated national position will give the League the foundation it needs to advocate decisively to keep our elections fair and competitive.

Please join us November 15 from noon to 3p.m.   R.S.V.P. to me at for the location. All are welcome to learn about this issue, but only LWVSM members can participate in the consensus process.

Also, thanks to everyone who turned out to view Suffragrette with us. It was a moving and informative film, and I urge anyone who still hasn't seen it to do so.

LWVC News

The League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) is pleased to announce that materials for their study of Public Higher Education in California are now posted here.. LWVC President Helen Hutchison explains the study came in response to members' deep concerns about lack of access and the need for reform, saying, "This issue of access to high quality public education affects all Californians. The League encourages statewide discussions and we look forward to playing our part in building consensus on a way forward for our students and our state."  More
