Almost Halloween and the fall into winter holiday season starts. What many of remember as mostly a children's holiday has now grown up and is the second most decorated, most expensive holiday of the year.

While we are enjoying the little ones coming to trick or treat, lets also start thinking about the big kids tricks and treats that are a part of our current campaign finance "system."  More on this topic as we get closer to our meeting on November 15th, but if you want to start reading now background information is available here.

We had a small but both thoughtful and opinionated group last Saturday that discussed both how and why a constitutional amendment should be considered. These two studies will inform LWVUS legislative policies in future years.

Petition Signing Season

It has already started. People are on the streets collecting signatures for possible initiatives on the November 2016 ballot.

While many of us have sympathy for those collecting the signatures, it's not happy work and most get paid per signature, that should not influence our signing. One thing we have noted already is a sort of "bait and switch." The collector will have multiple petitions, talk about the top one or two that are an easy sell, then ask, "While you are here, can you sign this one also?" That is the one to read carefully!

We also suggest not signing the first time you are asked. The net makes it easy to get a little more information and be more informed about what you are signing. Signature collectors are sales people, they tell a good, but often incomplete story. That is what they are paid for. Informed signings helps keep badly written measures with unintended consequences off the ballot.

Presidential debates on TV, signature collectors at the market, and the election is still more than a year away!
