September 29, 2015

Cole browsing the 1957 Master Plan for Santa Monica, a gift from LWVSM after presentation by President Ann Williams.

We have all heard "The more things change, the more they stay the same."  This was something like the comments Mr. Cole made when quickly scanning a copy of the 1957 Master Plan for Santa Monica found in the LWVSM archives.  Seems many of the same issues in Santa Monica are still active over 60 years later.

Just one moment of a very successful fall Membership luncheon on Saturday, September 19th at the home of Neil and Karen Carrey.

We noticed that there are local League positions on four of the five current city priorities Cole discussed. These will be commented on in greater depth over the next few weeks.

Cole discussing issues over lunch with our senior member, Rose Kaufman, Judy Abdo to her right, Ann Greenspun to her left.

The membership luncheon is our traditional fall kick-off to a more active calendar.  In October the consensus meeting on amending the U.S. Constitution (background available here) is scheduled. And that is just the beginning. Watch the calendar below.
LWVC News
Legislative session ends
The current legislative session has come to an end with some disappointments and more successes.  There are 30 League supported bills currently waiting the Governor's signature or already chaptered (signed). Support for each of these bills is based on an adopted League position, the result of a study and consensus.

Visit our Bill Status Report web page to see these bills and urge the Governor to sign those of interest to you.

LWVC Higher Ed Study
The Study Guide and Consensus Questions for the Higher Ed study are now online.  We are planning a community meeting before our consensus meeting, both after the first of the year. If you would like to be a part of this study, contact us here.

Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal

Ever wonder what to do with left over  medications?  Leaving them on the shelf isn't safe for children, pets or anyone who could become confused. Flushing them down the drain only puts them in the water system with potential harm to us and aquatic life. Safe disposal is available at the drop box just for this purpose located outside the main entrance of the Public Safety Building at 333 Olympic Drive, open 24/7. For other locations call 1-800-988-6942.
