Yesterday was Labor Day. In most parts of the country the traditional end of summer, time to put away the white shoes. Not in Santa Monica, official autumn is still a couple of weeks away and our warmest days may be yet to come. Yet the holiday retains its true meaning for League. Many of the worker's rights, voter's rights issues celebrated yesterday are still our issues. Another reason to join us. One September transition does not change. All memberships in the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica expire in September of each year, If you are a continuing member your renewal notice is in the mail. If you are a new member, someone who has joined since May 2015, those were grace months and your renewal is not due until September 2016. If you are receiving this and you are not a member, why not? If you have opened this, you are interested in what we are doing. You don't have to be a member to attend many of our activities, but this next year those who are not members in good standing are going to be left out of four important meetings: coming to consensus on four important studies. Only members will be able to participate in this process. You will hear more about each of these in the coming weeks. But why wait. Just click on the join us button to the left and join now!

Please help us make sure that the legislature passes two crucial climate change bills!
SB 32 (Pavley) and SB 350 (de León and Leno) will be voted on by the full Assembly this week. It's time to urge your Assembly member to vote YES on these critically important bills. Even if you are comfortable with the way you think they will vote, your note is reassurance as they face a powerful oil lobby. The oil industry is pushing hard to block this breakthrough legislation, spending millions on advertising and lobbying hard to oppose the passage of these bills. We must counter their efforts and ensure that California remains a leader in addressing climate change. This is the message we need to send.
- SB 32 will set an enforceable limit on climate pollution that continues the reductions required by California's landmark AB 32of 2006. It will require a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission level of 80 percent below the 1990 level by 2050.
- SB 350 will set three goals for 2030 that cut GHG emissions: 50 percent of our electricity from renewable energy sources, 50 percent reduction in oil use in the transportation sector, and a doubling of energy efficiency in buildings.
We have Climate Change Action notices on our LWVSM Facebook page . Visit there, "like" and "share." |
